  • He plays a PRS Hollowbody II with piezo system allowing him to send an 'acoustic' signal to an acoustic (pre) amp or directly to the P.A.

  • Does anyone know the effects unit Gerry Leonard is using to create the acoustic sound through his electric? I'm certain it's not a Boss AC-2 or AC-3

  • HE IS GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @fabziggy1 I was just about to write the same....

  • haunting & soooo beautiful ~ took my breath away & filled my soul with wonder

  • Honestly version...lovely... gerry's sound make feel comfortable. Thanks bowie..

  • One of the best live performances ....bowie...send this video to everyone to show

the mystery of our lives and greatness in it all....

  • Brilliant... quite brilliant.

  • I swear... David Bowie's perhaps 1 incarnation away from Godhood...

  • A really sad song i think..look in davids eyes....hes good!

does anybody know a song like that?

  • @Mikethedead1 You're right. This song is food for the soul.

  • Amazing.

Apart from that nothing. :) Just amazing.

  • frakkin brilliant beyond belief!

  • Much better than the original. There was an awesome song trapped under six feet of bland pop and now it is free!

    BOWIE RULES!

  • @ChuckRage72

The original is great too! I have the longer version ! Kinda depressing but good.

  • love his speaking voice just as much as his singing voice! :)

  • amaaaaazing

    perfect acoustic....

  • amazing song

  • cool ya it is great

  • I've listen to this version of Loving The alien in the "Reality TOur" date in Milan - Italy.

    Unforgettable. Great Song. Great Performance.

  • it might be idk

  • Anyone knows what effect Gerry uses to obtain that realistic acoustic sound after he plays the guitar loop? Is it a Boss?

  • @Guedzilla he probably has a piezo pickup in the bridge of his guitar

  • ya he is still gettin beter

  • How many artists would have the guts to completely change, not kind of change the sound of a great song ? Not many, I am glad David is one of the them, Happy Belated !

  • gerry l good Dublin talent,great version

  • @moccasin10 yup it is good telent

  • a career spanning several decades and he's still innovating. this song sounds better then it ever has. How many artists reach a certain age and simply become a greatest hits act? not Bowie. still cranking out jams that hold their own to the best of his back catalogue and reinterpreting his older tunes.

  • where can I download this?

  • Bowie is the man...

But Gerry L ain't no slouch either

  • this takes the song to a whole different league. i'm not saying either is better, but this is my preferred one. jeez, the moment that guitar started playing, i remember the day my dad's uncle died. i listened to it then.

  • great version!love this song <3

  • Love YOU anti-spider

  • This version creates so much intensity for me, I am absolutely in love.David Bowie, if and when he passes he better get WAY more coverage than micheal jackson. Geez, this man is AMAZING

  • He's not that old, dont say that, u freak me out...

  • lol I don't mean to freak you out. He's not that old you're right. I take it back.

  • I like the original version a little better. This is really good, too, though.

  • I love this song!!!

  • All I can say is WOW!!!!!! This version makes you close your eyes and go into a little piece of his world.

  • Hach, das ist sowas von genial!!! Herrlich

  • Sollen wirEnglish sprechen? Das macht es gemachlich fur menschen zu sprechen zu die.

  • OMG

  • Haunting and Beautiful.......

  • I love this arrangement!!

  • david rulez

  • GOOSEBUMPS!!!

  • this is a beautiful live version.. i love this song since the day it came out..(1985 if i remember well)

i am literally enchanted by this artist...David's tormented way of singin this song is givin me goosebumps :)

David is milestone in rock history and he's still gorgeous.. now more than ever

  • Gracias AMIGA

  • Marvelous.

  • Youtube is a small place, Ray, Francine !

Thank you for the vid, The best song from his 80's period !

  • cute how he manages his hairdo...our lovely alien...give him a glass of water for his fizzy tablet...

  • Magnifique, David!

  • Beautiful.

  • best version in all years ♥

I'm so glad they did it back then

    but it's all over now

  • why is it over? Bowie's still a livin legend, and I hope there will be a new album out soon! :-)

  • My last comment was not meant to imply that this version is not a gem that makes 99.9 percent of what's on the radio dull as a knob. This version is haunting and beautiful: how could those lyrics not be a salient volcanic blast on an otherwise dead lyrical landscape? Bowie is right - most beliefs are straw houses that could not stand up to a challenge. But has Christ not stood every test mankind has thrown at him? Without his crucifiction for our sin and resurection, would Bowie be singing this?

  • I love both versions. Can't quite decide which seems to be better. They're just different.

  • The original is so much better. This is a pale version. The dissonance in the chorus is more broadly pronounced in this version which is cool but the whole thing is laboured.

  • The original contains much more energy, effort, passion and of course, the violin and guitar duet at the end is one of the best instrumental arrangements I've heard in life, period. Stands to reason since Adrien Belew of King Crimson performed it. The way Bowie rips his vocal chords in parts was a nice contrast to the flowing smoothness of the song. But I'm loathe to criticise Bowie because he lives in a mysterious realm fashioned by God. However, his time is running out. Then what David?

  • great guitar motive.. and great voice of course :)

  • Brilliant version !!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you dig Gerry's playing on this you'd also like his work with Jonatha Brooke on her live album. The guy's amazing.

  • chords for this version anyone?

  • they are a good team together this 2 I love them on Davids song " my death" Where we can find a pictures of David's Mum?..love to see that one too :)) She must be a Angel giving us David and his talent. god bless this Mother of David.

  • Listen to the lyrics please "watching them come and go the templars and the saracens" two sides of the debate stretching back the crusades, there is no one truth only the realisation that we are all equal

  • We mustn't forget...

    "Watching them come and go

Tomorrows and the yesterdays oh ho

    Christians and the unbelievers

Hanging by the cross and nail oh ho"

  • BEATIFUL!! WITH BIG B!!

  • Fabulous Mr Jones !!!

    What an artist...

  • most brilliant song ever!

  • Wow! This version of Loving the Alien is great! My hair stands up from my arms! Very haunting and David's voice is great. David Bowie forever!

  • would anyone have the guitar tabs for Gerry Leonards beautiful rendition of this? typical Bowie.

  • I loved this song when it came out, great song, I thought. like a few other Bowie, and others, mixed up in, that horrible, 1980's technical mix(sic)

    Gerry Leonard.....you're a star

  • seen and heard bowie 3 times. twice at stadiums....not good... once i was lucky enough to see and here at the Glasgow Barrowlands...mid 90's? wow

  • Absolutely phenomenal version. I was a huge fan of the original but I have to concede that this version makes a far stronger impact. If anything the message seems even more critical and timely. Bowie once again shows why he has stood the test of time and is nothing less than a genius.

  • I was there, this was an amazing concert and this was a real, hair standing up on the back of your neck moment. One thing that doesn't come across on the DVD is that there was a full 5 mins non stop ovation after Heroes before the encore. The most intense I've ever been to.

  • Very beautiful and haunting song.

  • This version is just incredible... knocks me back everytime i listen to it.

  • .... eye song was one that stands out about the show in berkley calf, that night,,and the young dudes too...

  • I was lucky enough to see live Bowie performing loving the alien with gerry leonard in Milan on oct 23 2003...heartbreaking version...wonderful..it made a great impression on me...all that memories..I first knew bowie around 83-84, when I was 15..and this whas one of the first songs that I really like...before knowing the back catalogue...and so...I was really impressed when I heard it in milan...

  • Personally, I can't say the studio version or this version is better. What I CAN say is that this is definitely one of David's strongest songs

  • I love this version. He's right, this is how it should've always been. Of course, any way he does it is how it should be.

  • Wow.... I've come back to some Bowie stuff. As a "child of the 80's" and a big goth/industrial fan, I did really like this version.. just dark enough to get my attention. Gerry Leonard is amazing.. and Bowie's voice and intenation are amazing....Funny, sometimes the re-interpretation (see Gary Numan's new stuff) now seems better than the original some 20-25 years on....... too bad they couldn't have made this then.....but then the record companies wouldn't have released it...... Too Bad.....

  • That little '..yes' right at the end before the grin is lovley. I prefer this version of the song to the studio. <3

  • Such a timeless and prophetic lyric.....That great big grin at the end!!!

  • Gerry Leonard is the MAN!

  • My grandmother would pray 5 times a day literally until the break of dawn. I wonder what makes people so religious they are a bit out of touch with reality. But right before she passed she predicted the current war saying it would be the last...hmmmm

  • Must really "crank it up" though, the audio is very low....

  • Ah....the magic of the Bo live, so emotive and mesmerizing...and lyrically....ever so topically relevent today in 2007!!!

  • WOW!!! I am speechless.

  • the DVD A Reality Tour <3

  • Ahhh!!! I love this song just as much as I love David Bowie!!! And I'm lick in love Bowie!!

  • A dark and mysterious song. I wonder how this would sound on "Reality" (the cd) instead of "Looking For Water". ANybody think this sounds like one of his songs he made in the final stage of his career?

  • BRAVO BOWIE

  • Amazing. When I first got the Reality DVD, I played this over and over. Incredible (and sad) how relevant it still is 20 years later.

  • Beautiful apostasy.

  • It is the way it should always had been done David.

It f####ng rules man! Swedish fan, waiting to see you at the Globe Arena in Stockholm again. You gotta get back on tour, please!! You have some more years left to be our god and hero.

  • his voice is incredible and the first seconds of the guitar is haunting....

  • It's horrible... We can't download this wonderful, fantasic, magic video...

Someone can help me to have this video on my computer ? :)

  • buy the DVD "A Reality Tour 2003"

    worth every money

because I assume we never will see him touring again

  • I think we will.

Not a world tour, but I'd never rule out a small US and a UK tour.

  • sounds really great and i think this is the best quality i've ever seen on "youtube". how did you work?

  • I am yet again stunned at the ability Bowie has to stir up emotions in people... thank you so much

  • this is just great! i love this accoustic version.

  • no matter where your musical tastes take you, you always end up revisiting bowie!

  • The best song of today..

  • 80's version is one of his best - this version sucks

  • interesting you like the original arrangement. i think the original is overproduced and kinda cheesy, sounds dated. although either way it's one of his best 80's songs.

  • That was funny! I'm now watching in wide screen LOL!

Were you stoned when you thought of that??

  • Both versions are just unbelievable, but I rather this one though, it is amazing!

  • Like this version but i think people would not have got the message had it not been done as it was first time around...thanks for posting...

  • How can this version be so good and the 80s version be so bad? What was he thinking? Not complaining though - thanks for posting.

  • Well dear it would appear that he was "lost in the wilderness" at that time, don't ya know. But don't take my word for it,get it straight from the "horses mouth" at the cnn interview vlog on my site, cheers.

  • the 80's version is great, and this stripped down version just doesn't have that beautiful offbeat distinctive chorus that the 80's one has

  • Iva Davies and Icehouse did a version on the "Berlin Tapes" that gives the original song a run for its money....You can find the MP3 but I have not found a video of it.

  • This is one of the most compelling moments on the Reality DVD. David's vocal delivery is devestatingly haunting and tormented. Play it very loud, your spine will crackle.

  • i love this version of the song Loving The Alien!!

  • yeahhhh gerryyyyyyyyy leonarddddddddddddddd <3

  • As it should have always been.

  • Fabulous
