How many artists would have the guts to completely change, not kind of change the sound of a great song ? Not many, I am glad David is one of the them, Happy Belated !
a career spanning several decades and he's still innovating. this song sounds better then it ever has. How many artists reach a certain age and simply become a greatest hits act? not Bowie. still cranking out jams that hold their own to the best of his back catalogue and reinterpreting his older tunes.
this takes the song to a whole different league. i'm not saying either is better, but this is my preferred one. jeez, the moment that guitar started playing, i remember the day my dad's uncle died. i listened to it then.
This version creates so much intensity for me, I am absolutely in love.David Bowie, if and when he passes he better get WAY more coverage than micheal jackson. Geez, this man is AMAZING
My last comment was not meant to imply that this version is not a gem that makes 99.9 percent of what's on the radio dull as a knob. This version is haunting and beautiful: how could those lyrics not be a salient volcanic blast on an otherwise dead lyrical landscape? Bowie is right - most beliefs are straw houses that could not stand up to a challenge. But has Christ not stood every test mankind has thrown at him? Without his crucifiction for our sin and resurection, would Bowie be singing this?
The original is so much better. This is a pale version. The dissonance in the chorus is more broadly pronounced in this version which is cool but the whole thing is laboured.
The original contains much more energy, effort, passion and of course, the violin and guitar duet at the end is one of the best instrumental arrangements I've heard in life, period. Stands to reason since Adrien Belew of King Crimson performed it. The way Bowie rips his vocal chords in parts was a nice contrast to the flowing smoothness of the song. But I'm loathe to criticise Bowie because he lives in a mysterious realm fashioned by God. However, his time is running out. Then what David?
they are a good team together this 2 I love them on Davids song " my death" Where we can find a pictures of David's Mum?..love to see that one too :)) She must be a Angel giving us David and his talent. god bless this Mother of David.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
David looks EXACTLY like his MOTHER in his penultimate expression in this video when she was on the steps of the courthouse, after the civil wedding ceremony to Angela Barnett, as pictured in "Living On the Brink" by Tremlett. I never had a mother or father so I notice these things. Bowie, like the antagonist in Job, continually roams through the earth finding many truths. How then has he missed the most conspicuous truth of all: Jesus Christ, the Light, Life and Truth of the world? -John 14:6
Listen to the lyrics please "watching them come and go the templars and the saracens" two sides of the debate stretching back the crusades, there is no one truth only the realisation that we are all equal
Absolutely phenomenal version. I was a huge fan of the original but I have to concede that this version makes a far stronger impact. If anything the message seems even more critical and timely. Bowie once again shows why he has stood the test of time and is nothing less than a genius.
I was there, this was an amazing concert and this was a real, hair standing up on the back of your neck moment. One thing that doesn't come across on the DVD is that there was a full 5 mins non stop ovation after Heroes before the encore. The most intense I've ever been to.
I was lucky enough to see live Bowie performing loving the alien with gerry leonard in Milan on oct 23 2003...heartbreaking version...wonderful..it made a great impression on me...all that memories..I first knew bowie around 83-84, when I was 15..and this whas one of the first songs that I really like...before knowing the back catalogue...and so...I was really impressed when I heard it in milan...
Wow.... I've come back to some Bowie stuff. As a "child of the 80's" and a big goth/industrial fan, I did really like this version.. just dark enough to get my attention. Gerry Leonard is amazing.. and Bowie's voice and intenation are amazing....Funny, sometimes the re-interpretation (see Gary Numan's new stuff) now seems better than the original some 20-25 years on....... too bad they couldn't have made this then.....but then the record companies wouldn't have released it...... Too Bad.....
My grandmother would pray 5 times a day literally until the break of dawn. I wonder what makes people so religious they are a bit out of touch with reality. But right before she passed she predicted the current war saying it would be the last...hmmmm
A dark and mysterious song. I wonder how this would sound on "Reality" (the cd) instead of "Looking For Water". ANybody think this sounds like one of his songs he made in the final stage of his career?
It is the way it should always had been done David.

This is one of the most compelling moments on the Reality DVD. David's vocal delivery is devestatingly haunting and tormented. Play it very loud, your spine will crackle.
He plays a PRS Hollowbody II with piezo system allowing him to send an 'acoustic' signal to an acoustic (pre) amp or directly to the P.A.

Does anyone know the effects unit Gerry Leonard is using to create the acoustic sound through his electric? I'm certain it's not a Boss AC-2 or AC-3
