I learned how to read from looking at the titles of soap operas during the opening billboards, and from looking at the product titles and graphics during commercials. When I entered nursery school, I was reading on an upper elementary level. I also enjoyed reading comic books, especially, the DC and Marvel ones about superheroes. I had trouble with the pronunciation of "amoeba" and "Metropolis," though. Another of my favorites as a kid was MAD Magazine.
I love this video! It shows real kids talking about books and obviously very engaged in their discussions. I don't use roles in my classroom anymore, and it's great to see the movement away from roles in literature circles. I call this model classroom book clubs because it's like a real book club that might exist outside of school. So fun and motivating for kids!
WONDERFUL EXAMPLE! REAL! No roles being played. Just good, sound interactive conversation behaviors. Shows how kids can deeply connect to literature---IF we allow them this freedom within the circle structure. Thanks for this great example, ardith cole, author or Knee to Knee, Eye to Eye
I just got hired as a forth grade teacher, I start in 2.5 weeks. Looks like I'll have my hands full ;). However, they are too cute and they are definitely learning here and practicing comprehension skills!
