Oh fool, do not deny this man his due! To play Bach for us nearly 300 years after his death is miraculous. Glenn Gould is a genius, as is anyone who can flawlessly recite the scientific laws as articulated by Newton. Why would anyone bother to insult this man?
Enough of the preaching, friends. In the face of this music! Whether you thank God for it or thank man, can we not drop our dogmatics for just a minute and nineteen seconds and stand in awe of something that we all can agree is lovely and profound?
After Johann Sebastian Bach, who totally believed in God ("SDG": Soli Dei Gratia; all honor goes to God) and who has been the (super)genius as we have discovered he was, no one can seriously laugh anymore at the idea that a (real) God exists. Sure, Bach has tremendous merit of his own, but he has no merit in having the genius talent he had received from birth. He "only" fully developed that uncomparable talent.
Thats a pretty laughable argument. Please explain how musical merits translate to authority in matters such as the origin of the universe. These seem like unrelated fields to me.
@jsnauwaert Yes its true that bach's music was influcenced by religion but whos to say he wouldn't have created equaly impressive works if he had no religion at all or a different one. Its silly anyways to to say god gets all the glory for his works because then you also have to apply that same idea to all the atrocities commited in the name of god.
@jsnauwaert Remember that Bach lived in the 18th century, thats all people knew back then and it was heavily indoctrinated into people. Religious music has its own set of emotions and we can feel them without beliving in some Jesus or whatever, its just values and spirituality. For all you know Bach might have chosen not to take the bible literally anyway, if he did voice such an opinion however it would've definitely been sensored, at best. Ps. I hate atheism too
He was so completely in sync with the music that it just seemed to flow out of him, and his body was just some form of conduit. The fingerwork and technique is so precise and flawlessly elegant that it seems to defy human ability. One of, in not the, greatest pianists that's ever lived.
God? Hardly. You mean Glenn Gould. He himself deserves all ghe credit for his extraordinary achievements and owes no thanks to God, an unkown entity whom we all believe to be existent , when none can prove it. We all worship and thank him for anything we achieve ourselves. We may as well worship a glass of water.
@jojopooo Given that J.S.Bach was a devout Christian and that a lot of his music was inspired from and a celebration of his faith I find your comment simply not true. Remember Bach not only played this music but he also composed it.
@mknight717 No I DIDNT know that Bach was a composer...jeez. A musician's task is not the worship the composer whose music he plays, but to take his music and do with it what he deems appropriate. And when it comes to Glenn Gould, you can bet that he didn't care much whatever the heck the composer was thinking when he wrote it. Just take his interpretations of Mozart for example, strange but very brilliant at the same time.
@jojopooo I never said it was a musicians task to worship the composer.Where did that come from?
with regards to Mozart from what I've seen from Glenn Gould interviews he didnt think too highly of Mozart's Music.Maybe that affected his interpretations.
And let Bach himself answer what he was thinking when he wrote his music.
"The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul." —J.S. Bach
@jojopooo ".....Gould. He himself deserves all the credit for his extraordinary achievements..."
YOU can say that about him but he would never have said that about himself nor do artists in general say that about themselves. And that's not just polite modesty.
"We may as well worship a glass of water"
Indeed, but only the mad or the truly saintly manage that :)
@jojopooo i dont want to create a fight but please respect that some of us are religious. you posting that comment isnt going to convert anybody anyway. thankyou.
With that comment, you are likely offending the memory of Gould, since he was a believer in the Lord himself. It's not important who God is, just rest assured that there is some external force beyond our understanding. Free will is free will. No one says everyone's life is destined. But suppose it were, would you ever know it? In mathematics, a theorem is only proved accurate if you cannot find an error with it. It doesn't matter if you could prove the theorem a million different ways. Get it?

@jojopooo There are plenty of reasons to worship God or a supreme being, and to follow an organized, benevolent, useful, beneficial religion like Christainity or Judiasm. One very important reason is that the supreme law of society would be based on God and not government. There are numerous signs of a creator in the natural world. Anyone who doesn't want to recognized this highly suspect of being politically motivated, or just poorly educated by parents and schools.
GG blows my mind away, how can someone memorize so many incredibly complicated pieces, and keep such and even tempo, and NO MISTAKES, ITS UN BELIEVEABLE. Thank god, who gave him such a gift, that he decided to record videos like this for us all to see. What forsight
@Irshkboy: Oh, Gould made mistakes. The memorizing isn't that hard if you continuously play a piece over and over again. The procedural memory is a powerful tool of our brains.
@Irshkboy Numerous pianists and other musicians can memorize hour-long concerts and a lot more. I've done it myself. It's possible because the good music is well organized and performers fall in love with it. Then they devote hours and hours of practice and a hell of a lot of effort to it. It's just about the only thing they want to do. If you're enthusiastic about something, you can accomplish a heck of a lot.

Fascinating to see how Bach's music touches him. For me,
Glenn Gould is the angel of Bach, sent by him to make his
music come to life once again.
