  • haha I'm proud to be a waray-waray :) hah ! kaya beware ! even though I'm in canada now i still want to go back in leyte... ! i really LOVE LEYTE :p (warning: im half spanish and chinese and filipino from caloocan, but i still have the blood of a WARAY ! )

pero we can be friendly naman :)

  • I still cannot believe a foreigner (an American) Eartha Kitt covered this folk song. I understand if she got the part about the national language wrong (Waray is a distinct dialect from Tagalog.). When I first heard this song, I couldn't believe what I was hearing since I was used to her as the voice of Yzma in the Emperor's New Groove series.

    May she rest in peace.

  • @emir0721 Warai is a language, not a dialect.

  • was she drunk when she sang this song..hahaha! coz she sounds like it..hahaha

  • whow .. proud of being a wary2x.. hkhkhk

    wary gud kita sugad ..

  • Wow! This is a real treat from Eartha Kitt! Nat King Cole's singing "Dahil Sa Iyo" is a gave away. This one is excellent! Eartha's pronounciation of the lyrics of the song is superb! If you didn't know that she's an American you won't believe it!

  • Very interesting video, but I'm a little completely confused. My understanding is that Waray-Waray is a language, as is Tagalog. I read somewhere that Waray-Waray had some Spanish influence also. I only know a few words in Tagalog and a phrase - "gusto ko ng "word" (isda, gulay, etc.). Someone tried to teach me some Waray but it went over my head, I'm not good at languages (Kano, go figure?, haha). Maybe I run it by some friends and see what's being spoken.

    Anyway, thanks for posting it!

  • @kbconv Lots of Spanish. Handsome is Guwapo.

  • Proud to be a waray! Waray-waray are very loving, loyal and fair people. But you might want to think twice before you try to make them your enemy.

  • excellent....

  • being a visayan like me is not our defect but its ours identity!

  • Dialect n.

    1.

a.A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists: Cockney is a dialect of English.

b.A variety of language that with other varieties constitutes a single language of which no single variety is standard: the dialects of Ancient Greek.

  • RIP Eartha Kitt!

  • Your 100% correct Miradxb, my bad, :) on doing some further research, I found her Black American mother was raped by the rich white plantation owner, and at the young age of about 8 was given away to be raised by relatives. But all my research shows that she was able to sing in over 100 different languages, all to honor the different people of the world.... so I guess sometimes maybe she sang a few words wrong, it was the thought that counted, right? Take care.

  • Are you sure this is Eartha Kitt? It sounds like Elizabeth Ramsey, the Eartha Kitt of the Philippines.

  • Just an update, I have visted the beautiful E. Samar two times and stayed with a family near historic Balengi(forgot how to spell it) about 1 hours north from Tacloban City...anyway Eartha Kitt is a Black American woman, that because of racism had to move to Europe for many years. But my thoughts, just like the famous singer "Prince" she has a Filipino Mom or Dad. So in singing this song, she shows repect for her proud heritage and respect for the Philippines. Just the view of a Black American.

  • just for the record, she has no filipino blood nor her biography mention about her as half fil. yes her voice is like a cat..sexy cat..if u pay attention when she's narrating "tagalog" it sound "togalog..

  • That is completely untrue, realmercy. Eartha had a black mother and a white father. She was born and raised in SC until the age of 8. Her mother then sent her to live with her aunt in Harlem. Eartha spoke out against the Vietnam war at the White House in 1968. Lady Bird Johnson was outraged by her comments and Eartha was soon blacklisted in the US. She left the US and moved abroad because of it. She returned in 1974 but her leaving had nothing to do with racism, and she had no Filipino heritage.

  • Yes your right rlmelco, and I corrected it about 3 months ago. I did some research on her and found out the same things you said. Yes she was an outspoken black woman and spokeout against the vietnam war, just like Dr. Martin Luther King did. I sent the video to a Filipina that lives here in the USA, but wary wary is her native language, she loved he song and ask me how this black woman learned to sing it.. Maybe I got Ertha mixed up with Prince singer, Black like me, but the mother is Filipina

  • Like Eartha, I am from SC so I am familiar with her career. Eartha heard the song after visiting the region in the 1960's, and decided to record it. I just returned from a mission trip to Eastern Samar and Leyte in the Philippines on Saturday, so I am recently acquainted with the Waray people and their language. I lived with them on the Oras and Delores rivers for 2 weeks.

  • it doesnt matter kung hndi tama ang accent or whatever...it s awesome..a foreigner and a very good snger at that can sing better than the natives..lol 1st time to hear this version...plainly awesome!!! eartha can pronounce "matodas" with flawless ease!!...amazing talent this eartha is!!!!!mora man sab ug waray waray talaga!!

  • i am fure waray too

  • good try ms. singer...you should sing it in pure waray language. Ngan usa pa, dire man sugad hito kun nakanta an mga waray...

  • good try ms singer...you should sing it in pure waray-waray...dire man sugad hito kun na kanta an mga waray...!

  • A foreigner singing the WARAY (Samar-Leyte Dialect) anthem... Good try...

  • atik-atik man lasing yata ang kumakanta eh!

  • im pure waray waray, i love this song !

  • perfect tagalog and waray dialect!!Super!!

  • im a waray, sadly it was a wrong representation, the kailangan binatukan ni imelda arcos naggawa ng kanta kasi wala pang 5% ang waray wordings sa kanta.waray kaya c imelda

  • Eartha Kitt said this was tagalog...but it's not it's ilocano I believe. People are welcome to correct

  • First part was Tagalog, second part was Visaya, a dialect of leyte, last part was again in Tagalog

  • @deemortiz: Corection. Waray-waray is a language. If if were a dialect, then it would just be Tagalog with a funky accent, and I would understand it. But no, it's a completely different language of it's own.

  • it's not ilocano or tagalog firstjohn..it's the native language of people who live in the samar and leyte islands part of the visayas-the 3rd largest islands, Luzon being the largest and then Mindanao(where pacquiao came from)..

  • lumbiaknight87 - Samar is 4th largest island (63rd in the world) & Leyte is the 8th (94th in the world). A common misconception is that Samar is in Leyte or as one. Samar is a separate island and so as Leyte. but you are right, it's not ilocano it's WARAY & it's amazing how she projects waray-waray.

Another misconception btw, we are not war mongers, war freaks, whatever you call it. we are a peace loving people (mag-isog la kuno) :D

    Kudos to Eartha!

  • she is intoxicated,hehehe

  • agidaw!

  • si mac arthur yung ayan sa palo leyte! and then i think the san juanico bridge in tacloban then dugtong! go parazan and la paz leyte

  • oh my God this is sooo beautiful
