Actually, the "man in the mirror" opposite Max is Harry Mann. Mann was an actor/writer/director whose earliest work was that of a waiter in Lumiere Brothers movies.
The scene that inspired director Leo McCarey & the Marx Brothers to make "Duck Soup," arguably the greatest comedy ever. However, I should perhaps rent the Netflix version, if the quality is truly better. As with many silent films adapted for sound, a once-insoluble problem was that they had to be slowed down or sped up. This clip plays too slowly, marring the comic timing. With digital, this problem has been solved. Can anyone tell me if the Netflix version runs at a better clip?
Thank you for putting this online. I also was looking for this. Really appreciate it. Linder is just amazing. We Americans are a little unaware of Linder probably because he's french. If you know Chaplin, Marx, Buster Keaton then you know Linder. He inspired just about everyone.
This is from Max's 1921 feature, "Seven Years Bad Luck", one of six he made before his death in 1925 {only three of those features, including this one, are known to exist}...

Paul Merton did a great show all about film's early evolution. It's on BBC iPlayer.
Check it out. An hour well spent..

P.S. to previous post. I didn't mean to suggest that this film inspired ALL of "Duck Soup" -- just the famous mirror sequence.

@MoiDanseuseduMonde - I agree with you completely! Did you notice, to me, the guy (opposite Max) in the mirror, he reminds me of Chaplin?

Well, now we know where the Marx Bros. got the idea for the mirror scene in Duck Soup.
