Party trick, get a broken test tube and drop it in saying, this is magic oil that can fix broken test tubes. If you already have an unbroken test tube in the oil you can pull it out and it will seem as though you put in a broken test tube and the oil made it whole again.

Most liquids are below 1.7, and even a few optically dense media get up to 1.8 but are somewhat toxic and remarkably dense (3X water). A liquid with n=2.42 would likely cost an extraordinary figure—assuming such a thing is even physically possible—and in all likelihood have extremely unusual and/or dangerous properties. Not a good way to smuggle anything.
