  • im biracial, i love both. :)

  • The scene isn't about who 'sings' its better its just so show the contrast between white and black singing and how their vocals are different.

  • When I was in 7th grade me and my friends made a dance to this song for the talent show :) we had poodle skirts (I know not really with the 60's theme but it was all we had) and a little moving van.

  • @EllieBomBellyX did you really say coloured people?

  • -__-

  • Am I the only one who prefers the white girls cutesy version? I think it makes the mood of the song more funny, and if we saw the last bit performed by them, it'd be great, I think.

  • I mean we all can agree that this movie is so fun :D

  • talk about love at first sight

  • My choir is singing this song, and it's so much fun :)

  • I like how everyone thinks it matters who they think is better. No one actually cares. Worry about yourself and stop preaching. Damn.

  • haha im black/white and i like both versions

  • i think even all us white people know the black girls did it funkier lol

but white people can get crazy too! just not those girls

  • Both sides were good to me

  • Wow....black girls > white girls.

  • I found the ending hilarious. Black girls are all like "Look out lookoutlookoutlookOUT! She WAS a new girl in town" xD

  • I'm not segregated but I like the black version better because it has more rhythm

  • i love the negro day version :) xx this musical isnt like most others it actually means something and has an amazing message x

  • The white girls in this performance just pale in comparison. The black girls have more power, more passion and a complementing, energetic dance routine. I absolutely love the juxtaposition in this scene as it really does reveal the contrasting flavours between white and black tastes and music etiquette in the 60s. None of us can deny the contribution of African Americans in the history of modern music. They have TOTALLY shaped the industry in to what it is today.

  • That big little girl... Lol. Love this movie!

  • Penny this is Seaweed, Seaweed this is Penny

  • The song was faster than they were. But I love the part when the ladies in orange song about her getting hit by the moving van and then they were like "oh well."

  • Ok the black version is just better, yei!

  • From my opinion i just love the girls in orange dress!

  • why r the black ppl so much hipper nd cooler :s I WANNA B BLACK :'(((

  • @qwertyuiop5570 why you a wanna be BLACK like wat u r not wat u wanna be KMFT

  • @silvbjana why don't you write in english?

  • Every musical should have 3 random black women who appear at the most inappropriate moments and belt.

  • I kind of regret coming here. This song always gets stuck in my head.

  • Yo can we just state the obvious?

Black girls killed it, end of statement.

  • I'd like two separate versions of this (accidental segregation joke). I want the full by the white chicks, full by the Dynamites.

  • - the blacks Did that !

  • fuck all you! bitch IIIIIII sang it better!(;

  • @Aprilsmiles123 no....

  • I prefer the white version.

  • l0l the blck gurls stole the whole show

  • The girs in orange dance AMAZING!!!! Love it :)

  • does anybody else think if the two different girl groups switches llyrics it would sound wrong

  • i luv how this movie..shows both races coming 2 gether

  • Not being racist or anything,

But the black pretty orange girls have big!! bums tbh i wish i had a big one:L<3

  • I honestly don't think the black women are that great in this movie..Not that I think the white ones are either. I just think Tracy and her "mom" are.

  • The negros sound a million time better !

    :)

  • Th black guy that Penny hits on is HAWT!!!!

  • penny thinks "i want a chocolate lollipop!"

  • Flower dresses=cute

    orage dresses=HOT

  • the black woman sing

    Me;WHOA!!!!!!!!

    Mom:What?

    Shows black woman singing

    Mom:WHOA!!

  • NEGRO POWER!!!!

  • I wanna go back to the sixties

  • BEST MUSICAL EVER!!!!

  • @Palmurcio

Its Shelly , That Sings That Bit "Seems To Dance On Air"

<3 Hairspray , And Ambers Bit "Im Gonna Get Her , After School" Lol

  • new quiz what is the last word in this song

    A.GIRL

    B.BOY

    C.TOWN

  • @barnaby553 TOWN lol

  • @barnaby553

    the last word is

    town.

  • love this !!!!!!

    -A

  • my pus itches

  • Did anyone else have a Little Shop Of Horrors Flashback when the dynamites said "Look Out!"?

  • i'm white, and i think the black girls were better haha :)

  • The point of the two dances is the different styles.......remember Velma was trying to keep things white, and keep the blues out of it. It's what style of dancing you like....at the time.

  • i don't want to be rasies or something but the black people sings better

  • The Dynamites are like Destiny's Child!! XX

  • I love the black singers' part, it's awesome, but the girl who says "seems to dance on air" has a beautiful voice

  • Could you all haters just shut up and let me enjoy this song without comparing who's better here.

  • Ha:L it makes me laugh? you all have your opinions about who sings it better black or white? & im white, &i think coloured people always have an amazing, powerful voice! Its just white people's are softer, but the girls in the orange were just amazing! & im white, thats my opinion.

  • filme da minha infancia

  • omg got some talent

  • The orange dress ladies are so fierce xD

  • AS NEGAS DANÇAM MELHOR !

  • ISSO É DA MINHA ÉPOCA! TEENAGE É TÃO ISABEL EHEHEH

  • "We'd like to say Fuck You to the new Girl in Town"

  • Se me quedo pegada esta cancion!! :D <3

  • People remember: The black girls wrote the song, the white girls are singing a stolen "lighter and softer" version, so *of course* the black girls will nail it better.

That all said, both version are awesome.

  • shoot not only did the black girls do better but the black folks in the back was too lol

  • the first version is sweet, the second is cool. I prefer sweet girls.

  • damn those black chicks got it movin!!!! DAMN GIRL

    hot as well lol

  • The black women KILLED IT!

  • UGH . the black group sings it better , the white group makes the song sound like a queer . EVEN if thats how they sung songs back like that in the 6O`s ! :p

  • dear top comments- thats the POINT of the movie... hahah good one guys. the point of Hairspray is that white people and African Americans werent being treated equally even though they obviously are equal and deserve to be treated as so.

  • @wussupbtchs Thank you!!! It's the 60's. Come on guys, THINK!

  • @wussupbtchs Just call them black you don't have to be a cunt about it. Hell, my best friend is black he was born in England, ancestory in Africa so don't fucking call him an African-American when he has never even stepped foot in America. Why so ignorant? All black people were being treated indifferently to whites in the 60's, not just African Americans. Twat.

  • Now thats a bad ass punch

  • i would love to see the full version of both songs. both amazing in their own ways :)

  • Pfft. One of the reasons the black version was so much better is simply because they're so much more believable in their performace. If I were the new girl in town, I'd be terrified that those black chicks really would come after me based on their spunky, fierce attitudes!! Those white foo-foo dolls are pathetic push-overs who I'd assume would either run away from the fight or worry that they broke a nail or a heel.

  • i don't get the ending? does the new girl get killed my the moving van or does another girl move in?

  • @mihtagaran She gets killed, obviously.

  • My Theatre club at my school is going to do hairspray this year and I'm playing Tracy.......Wow, their's going to be a black Tracy hahahaha :)

  • I think the first part was really cute! And the second part, was totally spiced up!

  • I wish this was in the broadway version!

  • the white girls were too, white LOL the black girls killed it!!!!!

  • lol they turned black!!

  • Hahaha I wish there was a real Corny Collins show :P

  • UGH at the lyp sync being out :/

  • GOD I LOVE THE DINAMITES! AND THE WHITE ONES! GOD! I wish I could hear both themes at the same time!

  • @MySweet97

Totally took me like three views to even prosses what was going on with there feet lol, like some sort of stationary, sideways, moonwalk.

  • someone tell me how to do that 0:10

  • @MySweet97 i know i want to do it as well. i think its bcuz of the heels theyre wearing that makes it look so good as well as great dancing

  • So the "new girl in town" was hit and killed by the movin' van? lol That's what it sounds like

  • im black and i like both versions :)

  • O yeah,,black girls.dey killin it

  • im Black i love those white perky girls and i love my soul sisters

  • Im white and i like the black version sooo much better

  • @alee9955 me too ...

  • ladies in the orange dresses dance better than the girls in the flower dresses

    thumbs up if you agree!

  • @TheAllbieShow I agree, but I also think the black version is more hep to the jive of this generation than the white version is...so more people are bound to like it better!

  • @TheAllbieShow and sing better!!!!

  • @TheAllbieShow black ppl have the rhythm

  • @TheAllbieShow and they sing better too!!

  • @TheAllbieShow so in other words....the black ones! =)

  • @TheAllbieShow i play one of the girls in orange in my play (dynamites) soo happy i got the better part :D

  • im black..and from i first saw this i always thought the black version was better not because im black but they gave it more meaning.. Amber was talking about beating the girl up after school but she's all happy n smiling about it? uh no

  • I'm white and i think the black version was waaaay better, they know how to kick it!

  • well, while you finish to discuss the stupid fact that both versions are totally hardcore, i'd like to someone tell me how they do the move in 00:10 :( its awesome

  • Comment removed

  • im white, and i love the black version WAY better!

  • penny and seaweed are so cute.

  • Seriously whats the difference between black people and white people we are all the same but just different skin colour and tbh if u think about it some black people look tanned and white people wish they were tann :) I mean im not black but most black people are beautifull :)

  • I like the balck version better, it gives it soul. While the white version is more bubbly

  • Greetings folks, my names Lilly Muffin and Id like to butt fuck a airplane. If anyone has any extra airplanes just sitting around that they're not using and can assist me with butt fucking one, id appreciate it if you contacted me asap. Thank you all for your time, take care and have a great day. A cha cha cha

  • The actor that plays Seaweed.....MMPH!

  • Brittany Snow sounds like a little girl.. So cute <3

  • I love when the black people start singing <3

  • Thank you@nightswimmer99 all tht nonsense fussin was for nuthin they both were good in their own way!!

  • Sometimes I think there is a black girl living inside me... Then I feel proud. lol

  • White girls = The Angels (My Boyfriend's Back, 1963)

Black Girls = Martha and the Vandellas (Heatwave, 1963 - with a little of the Isley's "Shout!" from 1959 at the end)

Songwriters did a great job recreating the 60's sound.

The white girls nailed the pop version.

The black girls nailed the r&b version.

Just as the script called for. Well done all.

  • Here are some facts that may amuse you(:

Being black is only caused by your skin turning vitamin D from the sun into Melanin, to protect you from the sun. Whereas People who are Euro American or White use that vitamin D to make our bones stronger, which is why African Americans don't get as many sunburns, and Euro Americans die in chidlbirth a whole lot less often.

African Americans do not have different muscles or vocal chords.

  • the black girls murdered this song! wow!

  • @lakeridge333 "They Wrote It"!

  • The Comments are hilarious. I mean be honest.. im here with my best friend. (shes white.) and even SHE knows the black girl did better. The white girls sang good too! So.. anyone seeing that new harry potter movie?

  • I love this song and this movie

  • black power!!!

  • black and white doesnt matter its like 1965 all over again -_-

  • LOL at the idiots on this video getting all bothered and offended with the blatantly popular opinion/view that the black girls were the better singers here. I'm biracial (half black/half white) and I didn't find the first version of the song entertaining nor musically engaging lol. I don't even like this movie but the black chicks killed it here. Fact.

  • There is my opinion: I from far prefer the version with the black singers. But I can understand why people would prefer the first singers. The white girls are good... they have a cute way of singing... a bit too childish and cute for me though... But the later are great! They sing and move like... women! Mature, sexy, powerful, tigeresses... ^^

  • i love the part were they re sing you better lock up your man before he meets the new girl in town and they do that move with their feet!!!

  • The two versions are supposed to sound different, DAMN! The two versions are racially stereotypical to the type of music the both races sang in the 60's. GAH >.<

  • oooh, pretty flowers!

    ;)

  • The "white girls" are like age 14-16. Of course they won't be as good as the older black women in their mid to late 20s. Jesus.

They made the black group sound better on purpose.

  • @WDM08002 Actually no. Black women have more "Soul" when they sing no matter what age group. You should research it up. Black people like to put 'Soul' in there voices when they sing.

  • @McDogginified Research..? Why sure. Is black women's "Soul" cited within academic texts..? I trust you can adequately "source" all your information?

In the meantime, "Soul" is just a nonspecific term that people ascribe to music rendered by blacks in order to boost the attractiveness of the racial identity of blacks. In the end, quality is based on the talent of the people who perform, instead of their race. You would do well to remember that.

  • @WDM08002 Because of their vocal chords are thicker meaning they generate deeper voice which makes them have powerful voices. Some grew up in the church and through observation, they carried it on in their own technique. It goes back to slavery. In those days, the only way for slaves to express themselves were though song. So they used everything physically in their bodies to express themselves through spirituals.

Does the meaning "Soul" come into your mind now? Idiot.

  • @McDogginified I see. Do you have any academic references that show that black women's vocal chords are thicker than other people's? And does it occur to you that you are being rude to a complete stranger, for no real reason except that I disagreed with you?

"Soul" is a genre of religious music in the south. It is not an attribute that belongs to one race and not others. To assert that blacks today have "soul" because of prior ancestors and developed thick vocal cords is not scientific.

  • @WDM08002 There are different lengths and widths in our vocal canals, same goes with skulls and bone density.

Its called a "Autopsy". Western Africans tend to have deeper voices and most African Americans have West African roots. If you go to East Africa, you will not hear a ton of people (especially females) with very deep voices. Thats where we got our voices because thats where we orginated from. I know its not a attribute. "Soul" isen't a super hero power. The word "soul" is a adjective..

  • @McDogginified I'm aware how vocal cords work. I am an RN.

However, I have never seen any academic references that state that blacks or west africans have thicker vocal cords or deeper voices than anyone else. I have heard blacks with very high voices, actually. This might be something based more on your perception than scientific fact.

  • @WDM08002 Its genetics. Meaning it IS a scientific fact. Its like saying why are blacks naturally better athlectic then whites? Its because our muscle twicth fibers and our muscle density is far more better. Just because the word "Soul" isen't on news channels from all over the world doesen't mean it isen't scientificly proven. It has to do with DNA and RNA and all that other stuff. "Soul music" was orignated during slavery in the south. Throughout the years it has been passed down by blacks.

  • @McDogginified You're black? That makes SO much sense now.

By which I mean, it makes so much sense that your self-esteem issues lead you into making supremacist comments that bolster the image of your ethnicity. Sad but true.

  • @WDM08002 What in world does this have to do with anything of me having self-esteem issues? I'm giving you real facts, that I personally been researching since 07'. If I was making supremacist comments. I would say something like "Hey, did you know that all black people like fried chicken?", or "Did you know that all Blacks can't swim?" thats racism. Nothing I said bolster my image. Everything I'm probally saying to you is an opinion to you. But there hard facts that you need to learn, not me.

  • @McDogginified Somehow I doubt that you have been researching vocal chord thickness and muscle fibers as blacks to whties ( as if any research has even been done in that field ). According to your profile, you are a military layperson, which signifies that you probably don't know much about human anatomy and physiology. I on the other hand know quite a lot about it. None of what you said is written in academic texts. If you dispute that, then feel free to message me some sources. So long.

  • @WDM08002 Your right I'm a Military man, I'm in the Army. On the other hand I went to college and got a MBA in medical. I do know what I'm talking about as well. Oh well we have our opnions.

  • @McDogginified You're being kind of racist. o- o; I'm sure there are black women are out there who can't carry a tune. You're being racist to both black people and white people. You're stating a racial stereotype for black people, and saying they're better than white people. Soul isn't a black thing or a white thing, it's a HUMAN thing ~ That's a quote from a lead singer of a band that I can't remember at the moment...

  • @KissyKissyNomNom God all I am saying is that SOUL was orginated in the south by blacks. Jesus! I personally like the black version because it had more power and more energy not because they were black.

  • @McDogginified You did say that black people were better because they were black... o- o; oi. I personally like the white version better because they did it cuter.

  • @KissyKissyNomNom I didn't say I like them because they were black. I said they had more energy and more power. Holy BAT SHIT! What is wrong with this world?

  • @McDogginified Uh no, you said "Black people are better at sports because their muscles are better" or something like that and you also said that "black women's vocal cords are thicker because they're black so they're better singers" Honestly, who has to be reminded when they make a racist comment like that? Seriously? Wow...

  • @KissyKissyNomNom Do I honestly have to explain myself like I did to WDM08002?

Its because our muscle twicth fibers and our muscle density is far more better which makes us more athletic then any other race!!! FACT

There are different lengths and widths in our vocal canals, same goes with skulls and bone density. AND Because of their vocal chords are thicker meaning they generate deeper voice which makes them have powerful voices! FACT!! Damn do I have to show you my Master's degree?

  • @McDogginified Far more better? Really? There's no such thing as "far more better". And a fact is something that can be proven right or wrong, Example: The world is flat = Fact because it can be proven wrong. When you use words like "better" you are using an opinion word. Many white individuals have powerful voices and there are black people that can't carry a tune. It doesn't matter what color your skin is. I know a black lady that has a really high voice and it's not uber powerful.

  • @KissyKissyNomNom Then maybe all I'm saying is a lie. Maybe all the shit your saying is a lie. Maybe all the shit I'm saying is an opnion. Either then that many people can agree with me that the Black girls sounded better. That was the whole point of this arguement. It was quiet, Then all of a sudden Kissykissynomnom came from out of the woodworks and started attacking me with her opnions Your a girl, The white girls sounded better to you because it was cute. Oh wait! That sounds like an opnion?

  • @McDogginified It was an opinion, I wasn't claiming it was a fact, like you were. And what does me being a girl have to do with my opinion? So you're sexist as well as racist? Hmm....Oh and the white girls had more feet movement in their dance and I found it more engaging, and their voices seemed to fit the song more appropriately, as well as their dance moves did. Is that any way for you to speak to a lady?

  • @KissyKissyNomNom You were describing the video. I was giving information of why we sound and sing like the way we do. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS! I was talking about "soul" and where we got it from. Your butting in my fucking arguements, not knowing a clue on where this started out in the first place. So I suggest you stick to your buisness and I'll stick to mine.

  • @McDogginified You're being completely racist! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO COMMENT ABOUT THE VIDEO, not fake facts that make African Americans look better. I'm sure there are African Americans who can't carry a tune, just like there are Cacausions who sing with a ton of "soul" and "power". Skin color makes no difference. I'm sure, just because you're black, you're an awesome singer. Your skin color isn't a free ticket to something that's a gift, a talent. Nothing to do with skind color.

  • @McDogginified The African American women got the part because they were good singers, they had the GIFT, the TALENT, it has nothing to do with skin color. That's like saying all Native Americans are automatically great at shooting arrows just cause they're Native American. I can say something stupid like "They developed deep caulouses that allowed them to handle bows better and then it became something all of them have" Don't that sound ridiculous?

  • @McDogginified Saying that blacks are better genetically like that opens up racism in the opposite direction. You can't say you're better than somebody based on skin color. Sorry. We tried to do that, and Honest Abe told us to stop.

  • @kiramon I didn't say blacks are genetically better because I'm racist. I don't say things that don't have any proof towards them. If you don't believe me, fine. But you can research it up and figure out what I'm saying is true.

  • Ok, I'm a singer and can I just say that black people have the most AMAZING voices. You have no idea how much I wish I could sound like that, I can only dream of it. They are truly amazing. You go girls!

  • FUCKING TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNE <3

  • ugh wow guys. it's a fucking song, no need to make a huge deal out of this.

  • I'm french and I like the way they say "Rendez-Vous" at 1:31, it's so cuuute! :D

  • Did black people always had more soul and were better in dancing?

    It just looks so amazing!

  • Mr. man's line doesn't make sense if you think about it. "More people are breathing aerosol than oxygen!" It should be "People are breathing more aerosol than oxygen!"

  • @marie144cats It makes sense, it's like saying "there are more people over here than there are over there". He's saying more people are breating aerosol.
