this was the last song in the Concert for George Harrison a the Royal Albert Hall on Nov 29,2002. It was sung by Joe Brown, and he played the ukelele as accompaniment. the song is really beautiful; the words touch the heart.
Like most of the standards, this song accepts a lot of interpretations. Boone was good for that..."Love Letters In The Sand", for example. I like this mid-tempo shuffle.
Just so I'm not misunderstood, I think Pat Boone is a tremendous talent, it is just that I think the song, though a love song, was meant by Isham Jones to be slightly more up tempo. There is a Ray Conniff album called Young at Heart where I've heard that done. I've often seen Stardust listened as the greatest song of all time, but I vote for this one. I mean have you ever heard a lyric more beautiful. "Someone took you out of my arms. But still I feel the thrill of your charms." WOW!
Pat Boone does a fine job, but there are other arrangements I feel are better. That aside, the melody of this song is very special and I think the lyrics are perhaps the most beautiful of any I've ever heard. And what makes it even more remarkable is that they were written by Gus Kahn, an immigrant to this country who arrived here speaking only Yiddish. Kahn was the lyricist on many great songs and his screen biography bears this song's title. The movie starred Doris Day & Danny Thomas.
