  • Actually the professor wasn't all that wrong in thinking Ruthenium was named after some place in Czechoslovakia. The very easternmost tip of Czechoslovakia was known as Carpathian Ruthenia (annexed by Ukraine after WWII). Interesting piece of territory actually.

  • russian father - "сын я разочарован."

  • 2:25 BEST TIE EVER!!!

  • I want a alcohol scented candle

  • 1:29:20 @ 5:34

  • I want that tie!!!

  • Ok, who doesn't want a Vinegar scented Christmas Candle now?

  • PERIODIC TABLE videos give us a lot of information!

I like ruthenium and its interesting coordination chemistry aspects!

I wish a happy International Year of Chemistry 2011 for everybody!!

  • Is that a copy of Claydon and Greeves I spy in the background? Nick Greeves taught me organic chemistry :P

  • i love his neck tie... 2:44

  • Don't mess with this guy, his father is Russian.

  • Nice video, BUT there is NO Czechoslovakia since 1993. There is the Czech republic and Slovakia.

  • @919664 I believe Mr. Poliakoff was born long before 1993.

  • is ruthium poisonus

  • @dukilaki Very poisonous!

  • In soviet russia, element discovers you!

  • I like the "family tree of supervisors" concept. :D

  • Nice Hair dew (no Really) (why Wont Any one believe ME????)

  • Nice Hair dew (no Really)

  • Apparently ruthenium is used to plate costume jewlery and other trinkets black. Thats where I got my sample for my own table Im building.

  • LOl Imagine a black guy with a perm. Now imagine him only white.

  • There is a user on Youtube called NurdRage who has shown that ruthenium does not dissolve in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, or even aqua regia, but it dissolves in bleach.

  • Wait, why would he be embarrassed for being a chemistry professor? Being a Chemist is a very rewarding profession.

  • He might be embarrassed because he is a chemistry professor and was wrong about an element.

  • He says it himself. He was embarrassed because he messed up about the element and it was connected with Russia.

  • Yes DeltaPhi, that's what I was saying, but people gave me a bunch of thumbs down for it. People on YouTube have no comprehension skills.

  • Nah. Not just YouTube. Broaden that to any kind of website that has comments and forums XD.

  • I love these videos, though I think the camera work is pretty shoddy at times. Enough with the rapid zooms!!!

  • @NASCreations: Gosh sorry... I'll try harder in future.

  • I didn't know you were so responsive!!! Sorry for being so harsh. I guess I'm just jealous that you got to do this project when it's something I'd have loved to have done.

  • @NASCreations: What, you only critique the camera work of people who don't respond! :)

We're grateful to everyone who watches and comments (as long as they are not offensive or inappropriate).

Not everyone likes crash zooms and jump cuts! But I do for this project - and I came up with the idea so I get to do it! ha ha! :)

Thanks for taking the time to watch anyway!

  • @periodicvideos I know I'm late, but I rather like your crash zooms. :]

  • @periodicvideos Nice project. ITs addictive. I'm at work and cant stop watching

  • @periodicvideos Yadif deinterlace please! If you do the Yadif dance, upload new versions with (Deinterlaced) tagged on the element name for already-existing videos, and your moleculars need to be deinterlaced from now on. If you use Avidemux, you can do that on the MPEG2 transcoding step using Video in menubar > Filters > Interlacing > Double click "Yadif" and leave all settings as default. Click OK, save file (NOT project) in toolbar, and give it a name. Then, press Carriage Return. Done.

  • yeah, i want a candle that smells like alcohol and vinigar ^^

  • ohh fun in the sun!!! Go on show us how you make plastic

  • I wonder if you can use it in petrol to make it explode faster? thus giving more power to an engine! would be expensive but worth a go!!

  • si lla los as leido copia y pega esto en 5 videos mas o tu madre morirá en 3 dias, hacedlo por favor mi a mi amigo le paso, yo lo e hecho pa que no me pase, por fabor acedme caso. esto es una maldicioooooon.

  • Haha Vinegar smelling candles.

  • haha, thats funny, and nasty.

  • He has the periodic table on his tie. Who else noticed that? :P

  • i really feel that Martyn could be the next einstein

  • einstein was a german physicist

Martyn is a brilliant chemist from nottingham

    emphasis on BRILLIANT

    the man knows his stuff

  • haha, he won for the nobel for making nice smelling candles.

  • lol

  • lol you can have candles that smells like alcohol

  • Can you guys get some Carborane acid and feact it with water or see what it does? If you can't get that can you get Xenon Tetrafluoride and play around with it? I mean make videos of it.

  • LOL he has a periodic table tie

  • his hair is mentaly crazy ^^

  • its crazy awesome!!

  • his tie is so cool

  • lol you can get a candle that smells like...alcohol?

  • Comment removed

  • Organic compound/organic solvent. Not a petroleum product.

  • yeh sorry orfanic product

  • I have one of those mugs. its my fave mug too =P

  • Ill have a "g" of Roob!

  • Roobippy?! XD

  • @theguycalledchris

I think that he was referring to tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) chloride. It's sometimes called Rubipy or ruthenium bpy because of its chemical name [Ru(bipy)3]Cl2.

  • aww it cut off just as they were talking about applications with solar energy

  • I love this guy's hair.

I now know a whole lot more about Ruthenium because his hair kept me watching.

  • i LOVE CHEMISTRY TIES!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2:20 That is the best tie ever!

  • "Great great great great great.. superviser" xD

  • yay,

candles that smell like viniga... eeeh vannilla!!! xD

  • Lmfao that was funny xD

  • lol he probably is read it off the sheet wrong... lol who wants to smell vinigah =O

  • stoners

  • at 2:06 why does the size of a particle make it light or dark?

  • Larger surface area= more light absorbed and thus darker. That's my guess.

  • oops, I meant 1:58

  • seemed like an abrupt end.

  • I laughed when he said "He got the Nobel prize because he made nice smelling candles?"

    hahahaa

  • lol same here

  • Where can I get that tie prof?

  • The Professor is a very cool guy.

  • This video was recorded around the time of 1:26 as seen on the proffs watch. Awesome vid guys!

  • I'm going to go to England, hunt down that professor and straighten his hair... And then I will ask for a lecture on most of the elements... That would be a good day...

  • Where can I get my vinegar candle?

  • What has science done?

  • That's a joke, right?

  • I think he just misspoke, but then again maybe the British like their homes to smell like vinegar and alcohol during the Holidays.

  • Oh I was replying to you saying what has science done because when I saw the comment it didn't look like it was in response to anything so I thought you were just trying to say that science has done nothing for us.

  • to arthurspilling, what a disappointing question to raise.

  • rotatingwah, I was making a joke about vinegar scented candles. I forgot that youtube's comment system makes figuring out what is a response to what very difficult. Unless of course you are disappointed that I don't approve of vinegar scented candles. In that case I I stand my ground.

  • to arthurspilling, thank you for the clarification.

possibly inquiring about fish scented candles would be a nice follow up to your vinegar scented candle joke.

  • chemistry teachers should show 1 episode of this at the start of their class, lol

  • Too bad Youtube is blocked by just about every highschool.

  • It is a shame, yes, but go to our main website and you can watch the videos without YouTube! Follow the links.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks. I found the link.

  • @periodicvideos

Actually i'm sorry to say it does use youtube, just an embedded version. (i.e. just the video would be blocked, not the site)

  • @MattyHild sorry to say sorry to your sorry... but if you look more closely we have a help section which takes people to the non-YouTube version....

They are usually older versions of the videos though.

Look bottom-right of the site where it says YouTube Blocked.

  • I love this guy, is he serious?

  • Academic family tree... interesting concept.

  • This was a particularly interesting episode.

  • so ruthenium can also be called russium? xD

  • lol

  • in Soviet Russia element names you!

  • haha

  • I want a alcohol scented candle!

  • another great vid, as always, at 3:45 it looks like someone else is playin his hands

  • lol it actually does

  • the professor's watch is on military time. :)

  • actually, thats how time is read in Europe

  • Nice watch... 13:29

    :-)

  • It's not czechoslovakia it's now the czech republic and slovakia.

  • The English are (uniquely) known for obsessing over "academic supervisor genealogy...

I prefer to think of The Professor as the PRIMARY ancestor of modern, youtube chemists and chemistry ;)

  • Awesome tie=)

  • Love the tie! :-]

  • Does professor knows russian at speaking level ?

  • He Knows all! Lol

  • Yes The Professor speaks Russian.

  • Great tie prof.! :D

  • another interesting video. chemistry has always fascinated me.

  • Well said:). I study Chemical Physics at University. Do you study Chemistry or any related discipline in any way?

  • What is the unromantic name of the red compound? "Ruthenium pity"? Or "pithy"? Or "bippy"?

(I hoped it has something to do with Ruthenium red, but according to Wikipedia, "Ruthenium red is a [sic!] Ruthenium containing red staining dye.")

  • I like how the prof gets annoyed at the question about getting the Nobel prize form making nice smelling candles at 4:34.

    Another great video.

  • Anyone else noticed that the guy in green (I can't remember his name) always starts his sentences with "so"?

  • haha lol

  • I think his name is Pete Licence, if thats any help.

  • Thank you.

  • 2nd. lol

  • that tie rules
