  • Basic my ass.

  • The Transcription of this is in the book I did with Steve 'Up Close'.I transcribed it ,Steve proof read it .'Nuff said. Bobby Cleall

  • 0:20 *camera pans up* Oh hi Galileo. Still discovering stuff I see!

  • respect....

  • basic? humm... right. and now i'll start drinking before i sell my kit!

  • great idea to slow down at the end to me works very well

  • jesus...WOW! thats awesome!

  • Zen Master: The Phil Jackson of drums.

  • Sweet, Steve... appreciate your work... Thanks, man...

  • great stuff! he is complicated yet still keeps the groove!

  • This is from Steve Gadd's "Up Close" tuition DVD. Great drummer but this has to be just about the dullest drum DVD I've bought. Neither he nor the guy interviewing him show any interest in the subject. The two of them are barely able to stay awake - as was I when watching the DVD.

  • some cock head was trying to argue that neal peart was better than steve gadd, chad whackerman, and jojo mayer.

What makes it even sadder is that he's 35, and im 16, and he followed his arguement by trying to bring in lars ulrick.

    thats just... wow.

  • @Gr1zz3m hi bro some people just dont get it

  • Try to keep timing in your head as he plays... so hard!

  • paradiddle ain't it?

  • You ought to be able to play that lick slowly for real kid. " Earth"

  • if thats the basic paradidlle grove what is the expert paradidlle gorve??

  • 1:13 sounds like the hihat is taking a gasp of air lol

  • @ scarsontable It's a paradiddle...

  • Steve = Baas

  • Can i get the stickings, please?

  • that stick click at 0:17 sounds sweet...at 1:19 in the slow motion

  • Comment removed

  • A true master.

  • George Clooney on the drums?

  • @Kentsuruki You're probably the asshole that started the Chad Smith/Will Ferrell Thing XD

  • @rocknrollman123 NO! :D

  • Even slowed down I still can't see his left hand. How does he convince his wrist to rim shot and hit the skin over and over again so fast?

  • god bless you for being a pioneer, Gadd.

  • masterful drumming! love it

  • Steve Gadd makes better use of the paradiddle than any other drummer i can think of.

  • my paradiddles don't sound like that

  • @armedwithturtles,

Maybe you just need to grow a beard. Maybe that's all that's holding you back.

    (8^)

  • @nudist0885 dammit, i knew there was a trick to it!

  • I think I need to see the slowed down bit slowed down

  • took me soo long to learn this but i finnally got it.

  • SO MUCH fricking control it's unbelievable

  • Cool shirt.

No, seriously though, reading the title made me think it would be a sort of instructional video, but upon watching, I had a strange urge to cry...

  • I would say he is implying the basic grove in an advance way which makes it sound almost impossible......

  • @ethanbrochill

The advanced takes you far away from paradiddles.

  • What's the sticking? sounds like rrlr llrl

  • @BurningGundam85 I think it is (ll)rrlrlrll

  • @BurningGundam85

Yeah that's the sticking. He's splitting a paradiddle (rlrrlrll) between the hi-hat and the snare.

  • hes holding the stick backwards

  • Comment removed

  • lol he's such a n00b

  • hah he even lost himself in it, shows how cool it is

  • thank you for the slow mo...i could not comprehend what any of that amazingness was

  • steve god=gadd

    .......

  • I think you change the tittle to the gaddclass parradidle groove

  • i think you change that to the gadclass parradidle groove

  • Practice your inverted paradiddles, develop superior feel and you're set ladies & gentlemen.

  • Steve is so good

  • WHAT HATS ARE THOSE :O

  • @YellowInABottle1 Stetson?? {:>) Awesome drummer. He and Billy Cobham have the best one-handed snare licks. Buddy Rich, Krupa, Belson... all genius. Oh, and Neil Peart...and Lenny White...and Carl Palmer...

DAMN!!! Too many good ones...where's RINGO!!!

  • this is probably the sexiest drum groove ive ever heard.

  • If this is the basic, please, show me the end !!!

  • why is he holding his sticks backwards?

  • @Makksor Better bounce :)

  • Sick groove!

  • this the "basic" paradiddle ;p

  • omg it's David freaking Blane...

  • @shadyatomic No, it's Steve Gadd. Better than David chuffing Blane anyday!

  • overrated much?

  • @phishphan12345 fuck you. go try this out yourself and youll shit on how hard this is. he is one of the best studio drummers in the world. seriously, go find yourself another place that needs trolling (maybe a justin bieber video) or gtfo youtube.

  • @phishphan12345 post a video of yourself playing this or something even close to it.

  • yes... of course... basic... O_O!

  • slowin it down helped----NOT!!

  • @eqsmooth its the mic...

  • Look at that duct tape on the snare. Hilarious. even the GREATEST have trouble tuning their drums. Besides that this one of the sickest beats in history. Pure tasty goodness.

  • @eqsmooth I hope you realize that muffling has NOTHING to do with lack in knowledge of tuning. Muffling is a technique that CAN be used as a mask for bad tuning, but it can also be used in favor of the drummer. In this case, Steve is muffling a snare drum that is tuned very low, and snare drums tuned very low produce bad harmonics that do not contribute to the success of the sound of the drum, therefore they are removed to fatten the sound.

  • @I can't find my original quote but let me tell you that I met Dave Weckl 4 times & I've seen Gadd a few times live. I love both of them. They are the best. I was likely referring to recording techniques in the 70's/80's where the drums sounded like cardboard. Example: Hotel California. As a young drummer who could not tune I took the the bottom heads off & TAPED up my toms & snare. I hated the uncontrolled ring. I never, ever put tape on my drums now & haven't in 25 years. Why choke the wood?

  • it's sounds awesome even in slow mo

  • nice video thanks for posting the slowed down version as well, I now have a chance of one day being able to play this... it will never sound like gadd though :p

  • thank you whom ever slowed it down.

  • i dont see whats so amazing about this

  • @platinumshadow1 um... do it that perfectly o.o

  • @Anodyne123123 buy me a drumset

  • @platinumshadow1 so you dont even have one and just think this is easy eh? :/

just play the easy rhythms on a table or something, and if you are able to do so, you will at least have SOME insight of his amazingness

  • @Anodyne123123 yea i think its quite easy, its just a couple quick little hand movements not to hard at all

  • @platinumshadow1 oh come on stop trolling xD

  • wtf, where's the "basic" part??!! oh i see it's from 0:00 to 0:05!

  • 0:02-0:04 "seems simple enough"

0:05 "i don't deserve to hold drum sticks"

  • @bigshoesdrummingco,

    0:02 "be the sticks"

    0:03 "be the sticks"

    0:04 "be the sticks"

    0:05-0:08 "sell the set"

    OMG rotflmao

  • @bigshoesdrummingco my god so true... you dont :) lol

  • @bigshoesdrummingco make that me and you both, brother.

  • @bigshoesdrummingco so true haha

  • Wow Dr. House is playing drums

  • its so weird that he makes it look so easy

  • From now on. If something impresses me im going to say OH MY GADD!!

  • oh my god.!! this is aeesome.!!!

  • See more of Steve Gadd on SoulDrummers . com.

  • @ImaFez ok then hows this for an explanation: GO GET FUCKED.

  • basic.....

  • Folks this IS a Paradiddle LLRL RLRR all the way. Listen to the slow motion version if you need too. When he first starts he leads with his left hand for the first LL just before the downbeat, when he is in that sticking he has his right hand set for a 2 and 4 on the snare, he just has to get over and back in on the HH quickly. THEN he switches to a RR lead on the hi-hat and jumps into the paradiddle groove. There is no oddball hidden sticking, its all a single paradiddle.

  • @stevemo1967 yea ok man.... no need for such a long explanation.

  • @stevemo1967 A standard paradiddle is rlrr, lrll. You should probably set that out front first, dingleberry, before you preach and teach drums, asshole. LLRL would be a variation on a paradiddle,

  • @eqsmooth yeah i know the standard is lrll rlrr - typo up top on my part, but actually he plays ll as the AND UH of 4 as a lead in to one. Anyway, no need for your foulmouth, sounds like you are doing a fair amount of preaching yourself, so since u never post any videos why dont u shut ur trap until you do, fuckin smartass wannabe. No go back to your college drum class and pay $50,000 to play those eighth notes.

  • @stevemo1967 You are so busted. I've seen many of your comments and almost all are trolling negative attacks on innocent people. Kind of Like what you did to me. So my calculation of your character as an asshole seems to be true. No one here preaches more than you about quite meaningless things.

  • Yeah, eat your words man, like youre so innocent right?

  • 19 people are deaf

  • @Overlorddz Or 19 jerks tried to do that and failed.

  • beyond hallucination

  • Steve Gadd has total master over his craft. No doubt about it.

  • LLRLRRLLRRLLRLRLRLLRRLRLLRR. I also speak drummers language.

  • Steve Gadd can turn the simplest of things into a full on groove :)

  • what basic?

  • see THIS is a good drummer. "Sexy", tasteful playing (and not-playing), superior skills and technique. He does'nt noise it all in all the time like so many other drummers

  • Whats the sticking?

  • @thanoz123 LLRLRRLRLLRLRRLRLLRLRRLRLLRLRR... how cant you not know the paradiddle D;

  • @metallicarocks911 because it isn't the simple paradiddle,he is playing LLRLRRLRRL

  • @thanoz123 then why is it called the paradiddle in the title? :S

  • @metallicarocks911

Because it sounds a bit like a paradiddle and the poster made a mistake. It is not a paradiddle. The paradiddle is RLRRLRLL. Gadd is playing RLRRLRRL, which is like a paradiddle but slightly altered. And what you posted is an inverted paradiddle, not a paradiddle proper.

  • @colourfulwithaU i know :P i started on the left instead of the right lol... i guess youre right about the title and sticking lol

  • @thanoz123

The sticking is RLRRLRRL. Like the paradiddle, but one note difference.

  • I did a transcription of this solo in the book I wrote for Steve called 'Up Close'

For a great exercise ,look up 'Paradiddle Song' on here with me playing to a Louie Bellson/Gene krupa track from the early '60's Great Fun! Bobby Cleall

  • basic?

  • one of my fav drummers of all time

  • Damn!!! David blane gets down

  • OMG.

  • A true master! Complete control. Love the dynamics.

  • I don't believe he plays this with reversed sticks and gets that sound.

  • @PhilAroundhits Haha well he's doing it man!

  • @thecravenator42069 it hardly did so, try loosening up. Somethings too tight and let your inner child out master logician.

  • In Gadd we Trust

  • The hi hats just had an orgasm ^_^

  • One Word..

    "Beast"

  • what is the name of this video? Anybody know? I want to buy it.

  • Things have definitely come a long way, but Gadd was the fucking MAN in his time. A true pioneer and one of my all-time favorites.

  • @RCRhythm He's still the man dude. His musicality and style runs circles around most modern drummers, I don't care how fast their triplets and 32nds are.

  • @mikper7 Anyone saying Gadd isn't good is on crack. The dude is the beat, and is a funky and masterful drummer.

  • @Apathesis0

one of the best for sure

  • basic?

  • he makes me think to cheguevara playing drums!

  • basic paradiddle groove ...

  • You do it *slowly* first, that's why this video is especially helpful, thanks dude. BTW, it doesn't look like he does anything more than a double stroke on the HH at any one time, and it's based off a paradiddle, it's just the arrangement that makes it sound so "complicated", -and the fact that he can pull nuanced sounds out of a kit like nobody else ever has. Cheers.

  • how on earth do you do that?????? the one handed hi-hat sticking just doesn't seem possible! I'm either gonna be depressed or inspired in the morning! think I'll try for inspired!

  • Even an average drummer can learn to play this. But Gadd plays it with enough GROOVE to melt those average drummers at 10 paces.

  • could someone tell me the stickin on what he's doing at 0:28 ?

  • @kombo3000 sounds like a reverse lrllrlrr to me so start with the snare instead of the hh's - just my opinion not an expert

  • the sound of the drum is so nice.....

    the groove also

  • Gaddadidlle...

  • took me about 20 mins but i got it i down pretty good! yay!

  • Makes me want to throw my kit away, all those years spent practising, and I'm not fit to lace this guys boots...Oh well,at least I try, lol.

  • @robert140602 right there with you chief. I keep trying, but Gadd, Rich, Bonham and Carey are all still depressing to watch.

  • Uhm... eh... the "basic" paradidlle grove? Let me get home and burn my kit, just a minute..

  • lmao it's so funny to see him with black hair again!

  • 18 people don't know what a paradidlle is.

  • this is one of my favorite grooves to show off with. its not that hard to learn and it sounds like your doing something insanely complicated. gotta love gadd

  • lol i love this. Isn't it the basic LLRLRRLRLLRLRR put into application?

Gad makes everything sound amazing, that's why he's good, and others aren't.

  • So slick & smooth and in the groove.

  • @rhythmantic Encouraging, Gadd is a master drummer and yet this video got 18 dislikes. Now I don't feel so bad about some of my vids that did.

  • 18 people suck for not liking this

  • He should be called Steve "God".

  • @voyagerdrummer he is ;)

  • Hi, This might be easy for you master drummers out there but I've got a MIDI file of the first 2 bars (up to 10 seconds) if anyone wants it. I'm not a drummer but downloaded the audio and chopped it up and used Logic's audio-to-sampler track to capture timing after which I assigned notes to the Pop drum kit in Logic and moved Midi notes until I got something like this. If you have Logic then I can send the MIDI file. I'm working on the rest of the audio.

  • *groove

  • Obvious, but damn he's good.

  • so perfect :D

AND WHAT'S THAT HI-HAT? lol I want it so badly

  • well, the paradidlles are basic, and theyre awesome..... and i guess he plays with the bottom of the stick for a better rebound.

  • AMAZING!!

  • this is a fucking poem. it's a love letter to paradiddles

  • Great stuff and more confirmation that Gadd has a brilliant command of dynamics, groove, and timekeeping. Too bad that an entire generation doesn't even know about him and has fallen for the "dude I can rock the double kick sound even if I'm not in a band" approach that you hear demonstrated ad nauseum in Guitar Center. Ever wonder why no one invites you to be in their band ?

  • help!!! PARADIDDLES GROOVE 1:54

    LL R L RR L R LL??????

  • @BeanToine27

    ????

  • @JUVEinter2a1il5DICEM inverted paradiddles

  • ok... so the 'basic' groove goes: boom--cha--kr-boom-a-cha--kr...para.... wait - woah, woah, waaait - wtf was that?!? :D

  • he looks so much like my stepdad

  • What a man!

  • i wish to see the score for that...

  • Guys guys guys, being a great musician is not about how fast you can play! It's about your groove, your feel, your interpretation and your dedication. don't be shallow, just appreciate these great clips of these great musicians for what they are.

  • niiiiiiiiceeee

  • so thats basic? o0

  • Fuck this guy. Joey's faster.

  • @calcuttr1 Fuck Joey Mike is even faster

  • @Kibezter Fuck mike, Travis is even faster than that

  • @calcuttr1 Fuck Travis Lars is the best
