when go to the pool i jump in look under water and see a black pool drain cover i rush out of the pool and when i get out i nearly faint i hate pool drains
Im not alone!!! I have to take swimming this year in my school, and when i get to the deep end, i see it and hold on to the edge for a few minutes, and it takes me a minute to leave, and when i leave, i swim FAST!!!
When I was younger, I was absolutely terrified of the pool drain (I still am) at the school I visited for swim practice. The drain had a grate cover, and was quite large. It was bright yellow on the inside (I'm not sure what the yellow was ((not urine)), and had black bars. It scared the crap out of me. I wouldn't get in the water unless my swimming instructor was hovering over it. I also wouldn't go down there alone, and I always swam fast to that end and got out as quickly as possible.
I was terrified of drains before I knew they were actively sucking up water as I was swimming (I thout it was only used for draining) but then when I figured out what they really do I can't step foot in a pool
@crazygurl1087 As a kid I'd swim at night and was scared to death of the large pool light at the deep end. The drain didn't scare me, but that light always reminded me of an eye and when I'd look at it under water, I'd swim as fast as I could to the shallow end where I was "safe". LOL!
Story of my life here. I was caught in a pool drain when I was only 6 and almost drowned and was saved by my idiot instructor who told me to sit on it because it's fun. I'm pretty sure he tried to kill me.

17 years ago a friend of mine took me down to one at her subdivision pool. Inside of it was a hydrostatic valve and a 2" return to the pump. It wasn't scary with the drain cover off...but when the big, giant black cover went back on I was out of there.
Altough it will never suck you INTO, it can hold you and kill you. About 35 people died that way in the US in the last decade. Another 140 were trapped and also almost lost their life.

when i was little i saw a story on the news about public pool drains hurting people and at the same time saw a movie called tornado that had a scene where the nearby tornado sucked the water right out of the toilet and was sucking air out of all the drains.
it was months before i was comfortable even being in a bathroom at all. im 20 now and i still am not completely comfortable being around any sort of drain.

I love this video - I'm terrified of pool drains, ever since I was a kid. I'm now in my 30s and my phobia is 10 x worse!

That's why you should never open drain cover because goggles can't fit through the gaps and there's nothing to see in there.

they look fucking scary. and can actually drown u or mutilate you as well.
but can harm u in the following ways:
limb entrapment
suction entrapment
hair entrapment
mechanical entrapment.
also if the side skimmers are turned off/blocked and all the pressure goes to the bottom drains, they can suck you down, if your over them.
so the solution is multiple drains with large metal grates big enough not to trap hair, but small enough not to trap toes,etc.
also with it's metal grate secured on.
