Unfortunately, the narrator starts talking about the introduction of the 109G whilst we see footage of a 109E being wheeled out of the hanger. Very bad editing!
@sakoshooter48, the Mustang had an awful turn radius, laminar flow wings are great for high altitude and speed, but pants at turning my friend. Basic aerodynamics. The 109, let alone the Dora could do a Mustang in a turning fight. If your going to say anything, at least let it be constructive and of a cited opinion, instead of a regurgitated snippet from the History channel. Pleb
An objective point of view is lost by a lot of jingoism, mostly from an American point of view. The Mustang was a good aircraft, made better by a British engine, without that pairing it still would have been getting mauled by 109's in North Africa and on the continent. The 109 was of a sound design by mid to late 30's standard, the fact it served til '45 is a testament to Messerschmitt designers and in the hands of a skilled pilot could still out do an American pilot in a 'Stang.
The bf should never have been allowed to mass produce in the first place, the RLM new of the "landing and take off issues" with this plane yet nothing was done, the Heinkel He 112, should have been the main-stay fighter. Was a better machine by far, politics should have stayed out of it.
Folks, I hate to make assumptions or boastful claims that might be difficult to prove but if you look at the facts, the Germans produced the BEST fighters of WWII. I would take the latest versions of either the Me109 or Fw 190 and put them against ANYTHING the allies had! The Allies won by putting 30-40 aircraft up against 1 Me or Fw190. My money would be on Gallad, Rall, or Hartmann over Yeager anyday!

@kmfeiereisen Really, I raise your love of the krauts with guys like Gentile, Blesse, Bong, and Kepford! Nazi Schmatzi, all they had going for them was a head start. Their technology failed them, their government failed them, they were morally corrupt, and we served up a better asskicking than they ever could have. At best the Dora 9 was on par with the Mustang in handling, and the 'Stang was still faster with its laminar flow wing. STFU and quit trying to reinvent the wheel!!!!!
@kmfeiereisen I'l stick to the American pilots versions of what happened, by reading actual battle reports filed in the Library of Congress in the Library of the United States Army Air Corps. Of all the 33000 Bf-109's produced, fully 11000+ were destroyed in ground handling accidents. The aircraft as a frontline fighter was obsolete by 1942, hence the FW-190. I could go on forever, their aircraft were good, we were just better in the air, period!
..wtf... why were they showing footage of Bf 109E's when they were talking about the G variant... im sure theres a ton of footage of Bf 109G from the Deutsche Wochenschau and other sources
The narrative in this is wrong, the german bombers were not "mincemeat" to the UK aircraft and guns, this is proved by the devastation caused by the German bombers, the Brit fighters had trouble shooting down German bombers as they were better armed, the AA guns were just as hopless. In the 4 hour bombing of Coventry, one of the first big raids by the Germans not a single bomber was shot down on a crystal clear night with a full moon, hundreds of AA guns and searchlights were used.
@vstrom650blue Yes, but that's still an "inline" engine when it comes to aircraft engines. There are two broad categories of prop engines during this time, in-line engines, and radial engines. The Fw-190A had a radial engine. The Bf-109 and Fw-190D had in-line engines.
Did you also notice how he stated that the germans "lost" the Battle of Britain. Now i'm not going to make a debate or anything about this but both saids claimed they won and imo it might just as well be called a draw. But yeah good point about the P-51... guess he forgot to mention that the mustang started out in life 5 YEARS after the 109... and only maniged to be really good 'n fast when it got the merlin.
But he was correct. It was a little like the Hurricane, which was becoming obsolete as the war progressed. Whereas the Spitfire's design allowed it to improve to keep up with the next generation of fighters (e.g. FW190, P-51, Tempest), the 109 reached the end of its performance envelope - but like the Hurricane (which reached that point earlier in the war) it was rugged & good enough to be almost everywhere up to the end of the war.
@bnipmnaa Yours is the ypical Boast of a "Square Head" German whos arrogance would made it difficult to accept that they got their hinnies kick by Good Old American Know How.
@amer442 I'm not German, and the Mustang was arguably more the product of British specification & engineering than American. Away and munch half your weight in burgers, you complete fool.
Heinkel wasn't superior (and especially complicated and expensive to produce). In fact it was Willy Messerschmitt that had to rework and rework his project because he and RLM secretary of the state E. Milch had personal trouble.
109s were never really obsolete. The late redesigned versions were again almost in touch with allied fighters - but pilots were too few, not experienced, outnumbered.
It's a fact that 109 needed quite some experience to be handled correctly, that is all.
@texasfathead 109 had a two year head start as far as WW2 goes and was created in 1935. The P-51D with the Packard Merlin engine and the .50cals was no in service until late 1943, they used mainly P-51B's. Don't know where the P-47 comment came from, 109s did very well against the P-47, which was an enormously heavy plane and easy to manuveur against for the 109. Last, because of the 109's early start you had a-lot of VERY, VERY good German pilots up against green U.S. pilots.
@texasfathead Another typical comment from the land of steers and queers! Which one are you? Care to start over or do you really want to go down that road?
@geppdude German aces had a target rich enviroment but at the end of the day RAF and USAAC plus the Russian Pilots could all claim.....Mission Accomplished.... also rotated the scoring pilots purposely to expand the training of thousands more made Allied pilots a gigantic tidal wave that submerged the Luftwaffe... War is not a joust, the Air force mission was strategic to crush the War Machine the Germans mission was to stop them....they didn't..

yeah i think you're right, as Gen.Adolf Galland said, they should have replaced the Bf109 much earlier with Fw190 while replacing the Fw190 with Me262.
the 109 was a great plane until late 1942 when the USAF and RAF caught up .....and honestly the Germans had planes to replace the 109 on the drawing board they should have used instead they kept trying to upgrade the 109 to the K-4 Big mistake!
The whole WWII was a mistake ;-) anyway... Hitler attacked too much in the same time... Battle of Britain... the eastern battles... Italians attack in Africa... the western battles... well in all directions...
The good news is that the German government was very corrupt, and continued to build Me-109s even when they were obsolete. Heinkel's more advanced aircraft got little support.
He also doesn't say anything about the P-51 H. This final production version of the Mustang was among the fastest prop. fighters ever, able to reach 487 mph at 25,000 ft (7,600m)
P-51H did not see any combat in ww2. H-model was too late for europe. Fistfull of planes was used in pacific theater, but they never engage any enemy.
I dont think the engine was inline. I thought it was an inverted V12
