Turns out many of our country folk here in the U.S where bitchin' about tighter security measures taken by the TSA. Well, it seemed like it was only that. After so much campaining about travel boycott and biching on you tube, everyone traveled by air!
This was opting out of a method of screening - which wasn't possible at the many airports where the TSA turned off the machines BTW [doesn't that prove their lack of necessity?] - and one can opt out of said method without opting out of flying all together.

I took my 85 yo mom to the courthouse in Mount Holly NJ to visit an office there. I wheeled her in in a wheelchair and found 5 big, hulkin' guards and an x-ray machine. Mom's bag was scanned and they asked for the "scissors", you-know the little scissors old ladies carry for clipping coupons. I had to talk loudly to mom to tell her these guys were "afraid of your scissors!". We turned-over the offending weapon and went on our way. None of these guys held the door for us on the way out.
