can someone help me out? im 18 yrs old male. when i was probably around 7-8 years old i was molested by my own brother. and i believe this experience has caused me to be very unsocial/awkward. im not able to hold a relationship. now that i look back at it each year that goes by im more socially disconnected. i feel isolated in a way. when i look in the mirror, im kind of puzzled by my own reflection. what can i do so i can live a healthy life with healthy relationships?
@herbankidd Hi There, I am so sorry by your experience. Take a look at Peter Levine's books, Waking the Tiger, and his second book Healing Trauma, the second book is less technical, and has a self help CD with it. Maybe some expert counselling would help. I am a psychotherapist and have used Somatic Experiencing, ( Peter Levine) Mindfulness and Focusing to help trauma victims. Also Goggle Focusing Institute, to find out more about focusing. Best wishes John
Bill O'Hanlon is the one popular author I have respect for Ten Simple Ways to Change Your Life was the one I remember the most. A truly inspiring person
One thing I forgot was please for the love of God, talk about it!!
I kept it in for 2 months and that made me feel very separated from everyone. As soon as I started talking about it with as many people as possible I started to notice a recovery.
Changing thinking patterns will take a while because lets face it, the traumatic memory took a while to implement itself as well. But please endure the stress and know there is light at the end of the tunnel and there is hope. I wish you all a 100% full recovery because I'm on my way to 100% recovery as well.
This guy is so right. Listen, the way I feel about it is a traumatic memory is something thats established in the brain and something you feel you believe to be true. If this can occur than the opposite may also occur, that being you can establish a memory that tarnishes the traumatic one. Please just stick with it. There is hope and you'll be absolutely fine just recognize the negative thinking patterns and change them.
all B.S. The 4th way is suicide. If you don't have it you don't know what you are talking about. Have been further damaged by inept therapists with huge egos. have even written O'Hanlon, and he doesn't reply. He doesn't care, not unless, it is the color of money. Bunch of sh*t heads.
34 years sufferer. I have heard of this stuff and have been through all of it before. So you know how to get people over PTSD? Bottom line: Here I am Mr.O'Hanlon. Prove it.
ptsd... i fit and exhibit all the symptoms you list as various times... some are a back and for (the inhibited area) others are full time...
dissociative, abreaction, body mems... blah blah blah. YUCK.
anyhow, i tried the 'new plan' method about 20 years ago. faced and accepted the crap from the past on a cognitive level... 20 years later it slaps me in the face again... now am going the other route...
Bill O'Hanlon is a Master Therapist. His books, his lectures, and training classes are all superb! What amazes me about Bill is that he is always learning--constantly open to new research, new ideas. He then takes these findings and applies them to his theories. He also, as is demonstrated by these videos, is very socially conscious--wanting to give back- to help others.
Oh, tyvm for that :) I really had some issue of being sexual abuse, physical abuse and other abuse. I'll try that.

hahaha! This guy is FOS - he's NOT a trauma survivor and there's no mention of the damage to the Hippocampus evident in (real) PTSD.

@bugeinator Chaging thinking patterns is CBT, and may not be helpful. My own approach is based on Somatic Experiencing, Mindfulness, and focusing.

Whether someone goes over a bridge or through a bridge, the other side is the destination.
His message is hope. Would you like to contribute something that helped you? Someone might really be helped by what you have to share that has helped.
Ed Tick also has ideas, if you have time to look at those ideas. He wrote The Practice of Dream Healing.
