Tribal drift netting on the Skagit River takes non-targeted salmonoid species right off the spawning redds not to mention also rakes the gravel spawning area. The non targeted spcies are then discarded, dead and left to rot which leaves nutrients for the surviving smolts. Problem is that if you take that many fish off of an area and no eggs are left . where do the smolt come from, huh?
on the subject of steelhead killed, was that incidental or quota ? The Skagit River tribes killed more steelhead that year than the number of steelhead combined for washington and oregan states.
