"Can't Paly Around!", I can hear the children Stompin the floor at The Garage! Larry would drop the bass and the place would literaly vibrate! "Memories of King and Varick streets NYC!
Those were the days. So many clubs, so little time. I know I worried my poor Mom sick stayin out all nite into the day as a teenage girl then. Somehow the world didn't seem so dangerous then. Least I never got in much trouble-apart from being a little boy crazy! When I wasn't DJing myself, bet I was at the club. Viva Garage, Zanzibar, Shelter, Limelight, Palladium, 54, Loft(never made that one), Robots, Bank, ad infinitum
@ggee5566 Yeeeeessss, WOW!!!! Girl, you said Save The Robots, you went there on me!!!!How about The World? Those were the days. My mother was straight up sick of me. Ahhhhh memeories.
The Loft, 111 ones , Gotham s East and West 10 18's , fun House , Brooklyn Ozone Layer, Star ship, all were jam-min clubs, but nothing compare to the Paradise Garage. Memories Last a Lifetime .
WOW .... this was NOT the original version on the Atlantic 12" from 1982! (actually if you look at the label in this picture, it says its the vocal version, with a time of 5:30. This cut clocks in at over 9 minutes ... the 12" I have ends @ 5:30 ... I'm so intrigued at what version this is!!!
This was New York at its best. I am from NC but because I went to A&T with so many New Yorkers and having relatives there in the summer. I absorbed all the music. Made many cassettes with Shep Pettibone, Timmy Regisford. As a dj, thats how I created my style. Its the music, but its also painting the picture. This music in the late 70's early 80's provided an amazing canvass! I truely feel that all the best music has been made! No disrespect. just my opinion.
@CoolBreeze250 No,,,,,,,the group that did "My Love is Deep" were a younger trio produced by Michael Narada Walden in 1987and also known as Shades of Lace.
Ahhhh, this one REALLY does take me straight back to KIng & Varick, mmm mmm mmm. I too remember the night Lace performed it live there, and how Larry had teased us with the do do do do doo do, until you were BEGGING him to play it. He was at the top of his game at that point, and going there on a Sat night was like going to Church for me. The Paradise Garage was a religious experience...
I was there the night that Lace came and SANG this song at the Paradise Garage, I remember driving my friends 1973 Monte Carlo down 7th Ave and we lived when the song came on the radio, Rest in Peace my dear Sandra and Cobby!!!
Their were nights at Man's Country in Chicago that the children wanted all 4 mixes (on 2 12inches)blended and mix. I remember playing this for over a half hour. And though we didnt have a Richard Long sound system we did well.Peace
for all those who are interested...paradise garage reunion takes place this sunday - 158 bleeker street from 6:00pm till 4:00am ...bring ur garage membership cards for a discount at the door...however they are selling tickets as well....
I went once with some friends after leaving Midtown 43 and it was my first time coming out of a club when the sun was out...it was like 9am and after being in the dark G I walked out and the sun was killing my eyes...walked to that McDonald's and had breakafast...but this song has ALWAYS been a song that I could not dance to because it put me in an absolute trance..all I could do was stand there and rock....WOW...that was the days
i just missed The Garage but i was old enough when The Shelter was bangin'! Timmy Regisford would kill it with this song!! Damn i miss those days! the music was a soul cleanser!
Hey Househead4life36.. I was there at Paradise Garage every Friday.. and when this song was played.. the place got hot and sexy.. breakers on the side of you and freestylers around you dancing to this funky beat.. AWSOME!!!!!
@neptunskid I was also there every friday. The beach party every summer was also off the hook. When Larry played "Life Is Something Special" it was magical.
one of my favorite larry mixes a true legend with a passion 4 music and mixing like no other dj on the planet larry was my friend my teacher and my insperation u will live 4 ever in our hearts
I'll always associate this NYC production with the purest of Paradise Garage and NYC memories from the golden era late 70s-early 80s. NYC, the world's incubator for today's most popular dance musics.
the G was a magical place to party back in the day RIP Larry but when he mix it was like catching the holy ghost you feel me... i'm gonna be 50 & i still live for the G
When Larry played this cut at the Paradise Garage, the crowd danced on the WALLS! This song moved the crowd like few other soulful records could at the Big G. It is an experience, as long as I live on this side of this system of things, I will never forget!
hey i spun records 4 larry while he rollerscated around the garage dance floor on more than one occasion larry was my teacher my friend and insperation rip thank you larry and mike stone
I was a member of For The Record and a Garage regular after work (which for me was another club till 6AM). I don't doubt anyone but if everyone I've met who claimed they "rocked the Garage" actually went, the place would have been the size of Yankee stadium. B)) If someone says they went and they aren't at least 43.....well.
@droopusmaximus Not really true - as long as you looked old enough, knew someone with a keychain, and just hit the right groove you could get in. I made it the last weekend they were opened. I was brought right to the front of the line - embarrassed - walked by the Earthquake speakers - bass kicks in, and I fall on my ass - embarrassed again.
@djJackMF Fair enough, same at my place. Ok, if you were say...15 then, you're still going to be mid thirties. I just seem to see more people who claimed to have been there (or ten other NYC places of the day) than the places could have held. B)
@droopusmaximus agree !! I was there the night the place was held up ! Nothing like hearing gunshots while you're on acid ! We were just getting in when the crowd moved in a reaction to the ruckus like a tidal wave...scary ....but after awhile it got back to normal...used to come up from Philadelphia from the early days until 82 or 83....wish I could've gone more....best club ever on a good Sat. nite !
I remember when they came and performed this at Paradise Garage... We Lived.....
