Every song triggers memories of a place, a time, an event or a loved one..well this song triggers memories of my nephew who died a few years back, a real crazy Fogerty fan..this one was his favourites out of them all..not that i have a fav, Fogerty is a living legend that remains to produce amples of hits to his fans..Back to 'Brownie' or 'Jimmy the Kid' as he was known..when even i hear this song, it reminds me of him & my uncles who fought & died in the battle field throughout S.E.Asia in WW2.
two years ago two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later the babysitter was calling to see if she could cover the clown statue in the kid's room. the father said, "get the kids out of the house, we'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" was actually a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this onto 10 videos tonight the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 AM with a chainsaw in his hand.
Those of you that have to get into John's history, political views,etc...who cares??? I grew up during Vietnam. I was there when all this good music was being written. You young ones don't have a clue but you're about to. Enjoy the man's music while you can and LEARN.
For me John is the only musician who sounds like himself even after all these years, others have their voices cracking or not having the same range of notes...not John, he's still in there! Way to go Johnny!
@slarsen00 - I think your comment points to just one of the many reasons why John is such a great talent. His music is so good that he can communicate a strong political message without infuriating the people who may disagree with him...
@fa0798 - I think I'm largely an Independent. I do have strong feelings that the invasion of Iraq was ill-advised, and I do see (negative) parallels between that and our involvement in Vietnam.
@SeleniumRectifier When every television station in the United States is telling you to "Tune in at 9pm, for Operation Shock and Awe." That is not only reminiscent of Viet Nam, but also war for money and tv ratings. When one sniper could have killed Hussein, without blasting innocent civilians and destroying an entire country. That's just my opinion. I am in the peanut gallery of life. About John Fogarty's age. He sings the truth. Didn't we learn ?? Thanks !! Great
@cindiloohoo552 - Agreed. I can't recall if Shock and Awe was actually scheduled so it would appear live on US TV at a time slot favorable for the most number of viewers here? As to your main point, I don't know what - if anything - we've learned since Viet Nam.
@fa0798 Saying that John Fogerty served in the Army during the early Vietnam years, as a way to point to Fogerty's personal political opinions is REALLY silly and pretty PATHETIC. Fogerty was able to wrangle himself into an Army reserve unit that had virtually zero chances of deploying to Vietnam. He served 6 MONTHS on active duty and a total of ONE YEAR in the reserve unit. If you could get into that kind of unit, you wouldnt be DRAFTED. He didnt want to be drafted. HIS OWN WORDS.
@Shadowman4710 I agree fully. I was responding to another poster who was using Fogerty's military service as a way to somehow nail him down to a political opinion or view.
This is, in my own humble opinion, one of the greatest anti-senseless songs I have had the pleasure to hear. Along with Elvis' If I Could Dream and Cyrus' Some Gave All. These songs express what we all think and wish for, peace and harmony. WW1 was the war to end all wars, well that went awry somewhere. I long for the day when, no matter what your religion, colour, or sexual orientation, we can ALL live in harmony and respect.
Screw you, YouTube, for censoring my comments,(error, try again). I've seen alot of comments that are more controversial than the one I've been trying to get in, about the need for a one-world, democratic government.
John is so right about this. It is unbelievable that this nation is doing Vietnam all over again with the many young people sacrificing their beautiful lives for an endless, no win war. I'm a VN vet, and thought the US had learned from the horrible days of VN. ALWAYS SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BUT DON"T KILL THEM WITH OUR LOVE> GET THEM OUT!!!!
a wonderful deep song by the master, totally agree on the seniments of the lyrics, pity we cant send the heads of governments in the place of our servicemen and women to lay their lives on the line for their policies, My heart goes out to any family who has had kin pay the ultimate sacrifice in war. R.I.P to all our departed Servicemen and Women
Its sad but true, men have died for the right to say what we want and when we want. even on a music video, Freedom comes at a hell of a price. Two UNCLES in WW2 AND GREAT FRIENDS in Nam. Let freedom ring and always listen to all sides. What a great country we haveand lets keep it the way it is!

@MusicallyDetermined You´re right, and you´re wrong. The war is in fact something very human, but we could work to make new kind of wars in the future, economical wars, political wars, social wars, and not only military wars. The world is going to this, because the concept of "country" or "nacionality" is down on the future minds. The one-world is coming, man.
@fuzter2007 Problem is, too many nations and religions(and people) want to be the ones who shape that one world.

It's unfortunate, but most of America's wars are all about clearing out old arsenal inventory and trying out new weaponry than anything to do with moral ethics or defense. The weapons factories have become the lifeblood of the country.
shewt man...i wanna watcha republican listen to this song, i mean my bro is like hard right or whatever the hardcore republicans are, but they seem to be the ones who would be shootin this guy down for basically being one of the few celebrities to say hey...what the hell are we doing, but whatever man...*sigh*
ronofva its our the british governments fault as well dont just blame the american government To be honest all leaders are arseholes when it comes to war our boys dont even have proper equipment and now on the news some cheeky bastard politician wants to lower some sompensation on some soldiers injured while fighting in afghanistan. They should try fighting the taliban. They send our boys to war and they send shit to fight it with.
hullfc724 - lot of good points - re: the lowering of wounded soldiers compensation, & yeah send the bastard politicians in there to fight the taliban in afghanistan, with improper equipment - see how they like it!!
i first heard this song at my sister's 8th grade graduation, sung by one of her classmate as he played it too. it was awesome and it took me forever to find this there are so many songs titled Deja Vu
To John Fogerty, in memory of my son Cpl Joshua S. Harmon, November 25, 1986 ~ August 22, 2007 who lost his life in Northern Iraq; thank you for this song and of course Dont you wish it was true. For those who think John is about politics or antiwar, you are correct in a narrow sense. John is a wonderful person who is anti- senseless death and truly wants good lives for us all. On behalf of my son, please use respect when commenting about John. To everyone, thank you & be safe.
@dosgoat I can't even imagine that kind of loss, I have a lot of respect for those who are so dedicated to fight in what they believe in. The pain for so many families who are feeling the same type of loss. Bless you.
@dosgoat I'd seen John a few times. The first couple times, I was working concert security in San Francisco for the biggest concert promoter in the world...Bill Graham. then as a stagehand in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The latter was when John performed this song and had tears comming from my eyes. I have a son who is 34 yrs old and though he's still alive, I've not seen him since he was 5 months old, thanks to his mother. I still try to find him to this day. God Bless you!!!
In the late 60's and early 70"s they had this thing they called the draft. Then once in a while like playing bingo and hey "guess what" you were mandated into the military, cause they were gonna train you how to kill people hopefully before they would shoot you in the head. Do not get me wrong, I pray for our kids over yonder. Me, I was never drafted cause I would have gotten shot in the head before I can ever take another human beings life, Thus a person had to make a choice, What a choice @18!
I get so pissed off everytime I think of this song. Bush jr was hell bent on finishing what his daddy stated. For those of you who were to young this country was torn apart in the late
I saw this him perform this live a year or two back at the Hammersmith Apollo and it truly was something else. first time i had heard this track and was almost in tears( i was 25 at the time). A stunning performance by a stunning performer!!!! 10/10
Everything is political. To remain silent if you have something to say is a polical act. And to use your right to sing whatever you want, is not only a political act but also a democratic right.
jpstefan! You used that right here on the forum and please, inform us how you know anything about Fogertys political knowledge.
I agree, I'm conservative and John Fogerty's opinion doesn't bother me at all, this is an awesome song.I recognize the right to free speech it's a pretty awesome thing.
I guess he should never play "Fortunate Son" either! Better yet, lets eliminate ALL songs from 60's era artists that have a political message...THAT'LL WORK!!
someone said to a certain don henley once, did he think it unpatriotic to speak out to the masses regarding political issues and his response was "no! it is unpatriotic not to. if people who are in a position to be listened to dont say "hey somethings wrong"....who is else going to do it?.
Too bad so many good entertainers have to interject their uninformed opinions in their acts. Quite frankly, John, we don't care what you think about the war or politics. Keep singing, but beyond that keep your politics to yourself.
Um, I think it's a thing called "artistic license"to express your opinion on any given subject...I may not agree, but it's any artist's right, and Mr Fogerty, as one of the greatest artists of our time, expresses his opinion quite well.
It just accurred to me that this video does not include Fogerty's political commentary which is included on The Long Road Home DVD. That commentary was the basis of my post, not the song itself. My apologies for associating that commentary with this video.
I have no problem with artistic license in the art. But Fogerty's art is singing, not pontificating about political issues (about which he knows little.) We buy his albums and attend his concerts to hear him sing, not talk. I no more want to hear Fogerty discussing politics than I want to hear Chris Wallace singing Bad Moon Rising.
Do you know John Fogerty? If yes, then please corroborate your conclusory statements with examples given. If you do not know Mr. Fogerty then please stop pontificating about that which you no nothing. We appreciate the break.
"about which you NO nothing"? Obviously, you are the one who KNOWS (not NOS) nothing. Equally obviously, you preferred to spout off before reading all three of my posts. Hope the spouting makes you feel important and knowledgeable.
I love John Fogerty. He and CCR is my most favorite artist/band, ever. And I mean it. The songs all have so much meaning, feeling, and emotion. He helped me get through my tougher times.
i love the guy. it's sad he had to go through this twice. it would be bs if i guy my age wrote this, but he can sing it with authority. he's been a protester twice!
Fantastic! Nobody does it like John Fogerty. Things go around and around, just like deja vu all over again... We might have heard it all before, but it's well worth listening to.
wow its a song in similar vain to billy joels goodnight saigon..... very moving nad thought provoking. caught the show at manchester apollo on june 22 shame he did not perform this as its a favourite of mine but the show was fantastic anyway... dont forget john you said you would come back soon we willbe there when you do
I heard this song for the first time at the PNC a few years ago. It had been years since a song could move me to tears like this one did to me. The video he plays during the song adds so much while he strums his guitar. Funny...a single man and his acoustic guitar moved me more than the millions they spend on technology for P-Diddy and Brittney Spears. The kids today are missing so much...it's more than me getting old...today's music has no conscience at all.
The Vietnam era had a tradition of our greatest music artists being the heart and conscience of America. That has sadly passed, and here is Fogerty doing for popular music what the new guard should be doing. I guess though, he is uniquely qualified, given his perspective.
This song sounds much better in acoustic. Truly a great song here. Really wish he would have done that entire album in acoustic and didn't go so heavy with the synthesized bass. It would have been a really good album. Does anybody know if he released this song in just acoustic?
totally agree with you there.. not only a excellent guitar player n singer, but he is himself, n not copying some other's image.. by the way, this is the first time i hear this song, n i realize i haven't lived until now... words can't explain how great this song is..
War sucks. Neocons romanticize war. The largest anti-war demonstrations in history occurred before Iraq was invaded in 2003. Kudos to Fogerty.

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Have u lied? Have u stolen? Jesus said if you look at a woman with lust you have committed adultery with here in your heart. have u done that?
If God judge’s u by the Ten Commandments will u be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? Does this concern you?
Do u need a Savior from your sins?

It's unfortunate, but most of America's wars are all about clearing out old arsenal inventory and trying out new weaponry than anything to do with moral ethics or defense. The weapons factories have become the lifeblood of the country.

ronofva its our the british governments fault as well dont just blame the american government To be honest all leaders are arseholes when it comes to war our boys dont even have proper equipment and now on the news some cheeky bastard politician wants to lower some sompensation on some soldiers injured while fighting in afghanistan. They should try fighting the taliban. They send our boys to war and they send shit to fight it with.

Everything is political. To remain silent if you have something to say is a polical act. And to use your right to sing whatever you want, is not only a political act but also a democratic right.
jpstefan! You used that right here on the forum and please, inform us how you know anything about Fogertys political knowledge.
iggydylan 2 years ago 7
I agree, I'm conservative and John Fogerty's opinion doesn't bother me at all, this is an awesome song.I recognize the right to free speech it's a pretty awesome thing.
democratsareevil 2 years ago 3
I guess he should never play "Fortunate Son" either! Better yet, lets eliminate ALL songs from 60's era artists that have a political message...THAT'LL WORK!!
bcushing 2 years ago
someone said to a certain don henley once, did he think it unpatriotic to speak out to the masses regarding political issues and his response was "no! it is unpatriotic not to. if people who are in a position to be listened to dont say "hey somethings wrong"....who is else going to do it?.

megzzdesj 3 years ago
Too bad so many good entertainers have to interject their uninformed opinions in their acts. Quite frankly, John, we don't care what you think about the war or politics. Keep singing, but beyond that keep your politics to yourself.
jpstefan 3 years ago
Um, I think it's a thing called "artistic license"to express your opinion on any given subject...I may not agree, but it's any artist's right, and Mr Fogerty, as one of the greatest artists of our time, expresses his opinion quite well.
bcushing 3 years ago 3
Amen Brother ... You are spot on my friend!!
SkankyYank 3 years ago 4
It just accurred to me that this video does not include Fogerty's political commentary which is included on The Long Road Home DVD. That commentary was the basis of my post, not the song itself. My apologies for associating that commentary with this video.
jpstefan 3 years ago
I have no problem with artistic license in the art. But Fogerty's art is singing, not pontificating about political issues (about which he knows little.) We buy his albums and attend his concerts to hear him sing, not talk. I no more want to hear Fogerty discussing politics than I want to hear Chris Wallace singing Bad Moon Rising.
jpstefan 3 years ago
Do you know John Fogerty? If yes, then please corroborate your conclusory statements with examples given. If you do not know Mr. Fogerty then please stop pontificating about that which you no nothing. We appreciate the break.
bushcraft0304 2 years ago
"about which you NO nothing"? Obviously, you are the one who KNOWS (not NOS) nothing. Equally obviously, you preferred to spout off before reading all three of my posts. Hope the spouting makes you feel important and knowledgeable.

Fogerty is prompting the audience to think for themselves-over the head and through the ears to the basket-ball game we go! La-la.

There are members of the 'new guard' doing it, but none of them seem to have just the right touch, like he (still) does.
