The next motive, and the one I understand and agree with, is that the teacher may want their students to learn how to gather information from more than just the internet. One may say that this would be a useless skill because the internet is almost always easily accessible, but it's not a skill that it would hurt to have. Being able to find relevant information in a text is a useful skill that I have personally used on many occasions. Ok, rant done. Cheers to all those that read it!

Finally, teachers still ask that you find sources from books. This request has many motives depending on the teacher. Yes, some may dislike the internet for whatever reason, but the usual motive is that because anyone can use the internet, there is a likely chance of receiving false information. I don't agree with this motive because it is extremely easy to cross check information on the internet ( Continued one more time!)

Secondly, in professions that require higher order mathematics such as Economics and business, it is far more effective and time efficient to apply math rules to a problem rather than type each variable and number into a calculator. For instance, finding the derivative of y= 4x^3 (y'=12x^2) is much easier to solve in one's head than opening the derivative program in a calculator, typing the problem, and telling it to solve. There are some things I agree with Destiny about, but not what he is saying with teachers. For one thing, a calculator isn't an end all be all math problem fixer. You need to know what is going on, then use the calculator effectively. Simply adding fractions with a calculator is meaningless unless you understand what is happening. @Capeau yup that pretty much sums it up. The point of learning math in your head is so you train your brain to process number easily, fraction, basic integrals and non linear 2nd order equation.

In higher order mathematics a calculator is only used for a small portion, you have to be able to rearrange equations. No calculator can save you if you cant do a Runge-Kutta method to sove an ordinary diff. eq.

They would also say things like "you can't use Wikipedia for research, because anyone can go and edit it". The teachers never understood how Wikipedia was supposed to be used, or how accurate it actually is. Even if something false is posted, it still has to be cited, and you can still just search it somewhere else to verify it. They were probably just afraid of idiots copy/pasting material and them not being able to find it because the pages always change, just pure laziness from them.

I've had similar experiences in school, one with writing even. We were told in elementary school that we would need to use Cursive in middle school and high school, and that nothing else would be accepted. So we practiced and practiced, and guess what? Lower math (grade school) is designed to teach how to calculate basic stuff. Higher math (High school+college) is designed to teach you how to deal with problems in life (not just monetary) and find the best solution, or optimized solution to it. its a workout for your brain. by developing your logical part you enable yourself to find solutions in life quicker than other people. based not on knowledge (from the internet) but on how easily you find the best way to solve your issue.

I'm sorry but that was the worst argument by Destiny i've heard in a while. The main reason 6-8 years ago they said no using the internet was because who was to say that the source on the internet was true, people can say anything and there is very little evidence to say that what they say is correct. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DO THE BASICS DESTINY. Thats the problems with this last generation. You have to be able to use your brain, the heavy reliance on outside mechanisms makes your less effective and more of "it" using you rather than you using it.
