  • This is music...

  • song , singers, great. realilidad, horrible.rape rape rape. U2 impotent.Bono=rape.

  • My mother disappeared last saturday, out of nothing, While our son is born 4 days later. U2 so cruel

  • Justicia para el pueblo chileno y argentino!

  • @fzcamm U2 don't whinge about injustice in their land because they know about the children killed at Warrington, yes children. They know about the bomb at Enniskillen where people came to repsect the dead who had actually fought the Nazis unlike the bitter Irish. They also know about the bombing of working class people in a chip shop on Belfast's Shankill Road. U2, like all decent Irish people, are embarrassed by the IRA and they don't get fixated about hunger strikers.

  • @garyw930 yes, reference accidents. do they know about 14 murdered irish at a civil rights march, that the relevant brit authorities involved were commenended? until of course recently when 40 mil pounds in a sham admitted the brits were wrong. of course U2 knows, they made a half ass song about it. all; im sayin, if you cant see that your own island nation, your own country, isnt free, then dont meddle in latin america.

  • how did the heartbeats of 10 Irish hunger strkers sound? you fuckin cowards, sing about your Irish deadl; injustice in yer own fckin land, you COWARDS. U2 are COWARDS

  • I love this song.

  • there is no word to describe how this song is magic...

    <3 U2 <3

  • @TheAntichevre magic? maybe. pure, no. pure is rare to see amoungst people.

  • I'd been listening to this great piece since 1987. But I'll never forget sitting on my couch right after 9/11 with tears streaming down my cheeks while this song played on a local radio station during a 9/11 tribute. It took on a different meaning for me that day. I still get emotional hearing it.

  • I would like to thank my boss for sampling this song with his iPhone when I heard it at work and wanted to know what it was called.

  • The 6 people who disliked this song need to disappear.

  • did they copy this from avatar last airbender or did the last airbender copy cause it sounds realy alike <3 U2

  • @NlAviatorz U2 copied it from Avatar and time travelled back 25 years and put it on their album

  • @Burgley1 lol

  • @NlAviatorz You, Mr. are a dumbass.

  • @patoelbuenoss ah naw no shit shurlock caourse they didnt copy im not that dum not like avatar was like in the 80 like u2 <3 u2

  • Lanois is genius

  • @harrybythesea i know what the song is about i don't need to explain to anybody what i feel when i listen to music and the way it motivates me so who cares what you say! i wrote what i felt a week ago take it or leave it, it's a great song period that's the only thing that really matters.

  • What a great song!!! i woke up today listening to it and made my day happy it touches my fellings and emotions!

  • First time I listen to this song it made me cry..Love Bono and U2

  • A Magnificient moment..........

  • This song was inspired by the mothers of El Salvador when bono traveled to El Salvador in the decade of the 80s. this is the true story of this amazing song. as El Salvador suffered a civil war in the 80s.

  • @1981gospel The Mothers of the Disappeared is about the militaristic government in Argentina, not El Salvador

  • Comment removed

  • Did they have a clue??? Did they KNOW...while recording this album how EFFIN' AWESOME it was gonna be????? This album changed the way i listened to music forever....

  • ...Tears & remembering all those fallen in the Christchurch & Japanese Earthquakes..tsusami & Nuclear meltdown threat ... R.I.P.

  • been so long since I've been properly happy, please don't assume me of whining on youtube or over exaggerating problems. It's just there's so little prejudice in U2's music.Jesus I've been racked my guilt and shame.. but this stuff is so unjudging... haha bit like my dog's they don't give a fuck who you are... unconditional hahah i kept trying to remember that word while i was writing nd it popped into my head.. yeh.. unconditional

  • best song on the album.

  • I always think of my fellow brothers and sisters that were lost on 9/11 when I hear this song. I know that it was written 14 years before it but, it never escapes my mind what they went through and what we went through as a nation.

  • @buckynance : perfectly put, simply. Beautiful words of yours, and never forget that all of us are with you.

  • the best of the best......

  • As it says on the album "join amnesty international"

If you can really hear their heartbeat, you will.

  • U2 Joshua Tree is still one of my all time favourite albums. I think I have actually bought the cd twice because I wore out the first one from playing it in the car so much, warping, scratches. and I will but it again when I wear out the second. Im old school I buy music not like the theives out there that steal it!! Not only the music industry is effected by theft, everyone right from the retailer to the truck driver and even you (taxes) are affected by theft!

  • Midnight, our sons and daughters Were cut down and taken from us Hear their heartbeats We hear their heartbeats In the wind we hear their laughters In the rain we see their tears Hear their heartbeats We hear their heartbeats Ooh.... Night hangs like a prisoner Stretched over black and blue Hear their heartbeats We hear their heartbeats In the trees our sons stand naked Through the walls our daughters cry See their tears in the rainfall Ooh....
  • ♥ - simple, affecting, brilliant. Bono doing what he does best. What a song.

  • Hear their heartbeat, we hear their heartbeat.

  • @magliozn investiga mejor flaco

  • WHAT AM I TO YOU????IAM STILL THE PRISONER OF YOUR OWN MIND.....

  • just listen

  • Yesterday the remains of Peter Wilson were recovered from the earth. He was one of the many Irish catholics murdered and 'disappeared' by the IRA. WHY????

  • Reyludd...don't be a hater...the people here, like myself, just like U2...y hay algunos Americanos que hablan espanol...eres un deprivado...

  • @chefist ...Si

  • @chefist Werd, chefist.

  • Yeah, this song resonates.

  • I like. NO. I Love !

  • @Reyludd I dont think it's possible to translate this exactly...

without losing the imagery and the tone. All U2 songs convey great emotion. Yes, They are copied...but never duplicated.

  • With Exit and this song as the last two songs from The Joshua Tree, it makes a great ending to the album. It's not a bombastic end but a very dark one - and I love that.

  • The Joshua Tree is the best album of all time, but my favorite U2 album is Achtung Baby.

  • WHEN THIS OLD AND WEARY WORLD AND ITS MEN HAVE PASSED AWAY, THEY WHO COME AFTER WILL PLAY U2'S JOSHUA TREE TO REMEMBER US BY. IT IS, MUSICALLY, THE BEST, MOST SUCCINCT, AND HIGHEST DEFINITION OF MANKIND.

  • Beautiful song !

  • One of the best U2 songs of all time - what a way to finish an album

  • @goldminers1 they finish the Album with the best song ever writen which is not as good as other Tracks of Jushua Tree I just wrote this because what u see is not their what u hear is not present and those who knows will not tell, yeh i know ur thinking am Drunk but its prohbited to me from my Creator so am not but yes i get drunk every time when i hear this flawless ultimate undestructable melody which was produced by some genius and will be their till the infinity in all dimensions of Universe.

  • @muhammadsherazmirza, you're wasted man!

  • This song makes me cry at the end.

  • Mothers of the disappeared what?

  • @OBAMASTINKSLIKEANAPE The song was written as a reaction to those who "disappeared" in Argentina's Dirty Wars. Do a google search for "Madres de la plaza de mayo"

  • This kept me "alive" after a near fatal accident in a foreign land. Someone brought me a walkman and this album, and I listened constantly for 4 weeks. Beautiful, just stunning..thank you..

  • Wow U2 is the greatest

  • Haunting???? This put me to rest in the evenings of my freshman year of highschool......still sooths today.

  • This song is about thousands of young activists that disappeared during junta's murderous reign in Argentina. mothers to day are wondering what happened to their sons and daughters. This is U2's haunting tribute to them.

  • el salvador, ireland

  • You know what everybody? I don't think these kind of negative comments are what U2 would have wanted to be centered around one of their great songs. We are all people, we should be all considered equal, and we all live in ignorance so you can't go saying that one political party is more ignorant than another. End of story.

  • One of the most up~setting songs ever recorded.

  • Years I've not listen to this music. During my teenage years, I couldn't sleep before listening to this tune. So beautiful, sad and powerful.

  • This song was a haunting end to a landmark album. It haunted my childhood in the late evenings and even now is almost too hard to listen to. To end Joshua Tree with the whispers of this song...well, a masterful moment in music production.

  • @carbomb19 Couldn't have said it better myself brother!

  • FERBONICHES IS A SELF-RIGHTEOUS TWAT

  • Joshua Tree is timeless body of work; what they (U2, Eno & Lanois) tapped into on that particular album what magic, timeless and true - pretty much transcendental...

  • Albums like the Joshua Tree only come once in a little while to touch everyone's heart universally.

  • Come to think of it, I can't think of a better album off the top of my head.

The Unforgettable Fire might be as good!

    :)

  • Sad song but brilliant

  • Wow, you guys are harsh to music man. He said the most truthful statement and you guys ripped him. But this song is about this group who take these children in the night and the children are never seen again.

  • Thank you locaterobert, I knew this was about the children, however I saw another video put to this song about the victims of war. But commented here instead, so my apologies to those who were confused and thank you for standing up for me.

  • Not children but adults, people opposed to Pinoche!

  • Oh shit, it isn´t possible there are people so stupid and ignorant like MUSICMAN... When I don´t know the history... or whatever, I say NOTHING, I DON´T SPEAK, but you are very, very stupid and ignorant and you speak, speak and speak with your big, big, bit shit mouth!!!! SHUT UP MOTHERFUCKER!!!! SHUT UP SON OF NIXON AND REAGAN!!!!! LEARN!!! STUDY!!!! IT´S THE BEST MEDICINE FOR THE STUPIDS LIKE YOU!!!!

  • WHAT DOES MUSICMAN7505 SAY?????? HE KNOWS NOTHING!!! Oh shit, you must learnt, know, study, and after, perhaps you could say something, but I don´t believe it, you are so stupid, you know NOTHING about the world history, about the conflicts, etc...

  • " A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages!" [Tennessee Williams]

  • I always loved this song from the first time I heard it in 1987. But after 9/11 a local radio station played it as part of a dedication show...and it took on new meaning for me. I remember sitting there listening to it with trears streamming down my face and anger welling up inside of me. 8 years ago today....wow how time flys.

  • Did the song hit you like that because you thought that your country had been attacked or simply because people in the attacks had been lost?

  • Both....I was angry that someone could take away so many lives and not think twice about it. But I also hurt for the people who had lost mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. I've not looked at the world with the same feeling of hope since 9/11...and I never will again. The only "hope" I have is that the pigs that did this are burning in hell forever.

  • This song is far ahead of it's time.

  • Wise thoughts, musicman7505, but not necessary in this case. Song's about mass murder of political opponents of Pinochet who led military coup backed by the Nixon administration over Chile, 1973. They are known as "the disappeared" because their remains are still unknown. All that is to say: no worry for the mothers of the "other side" in this particular case. They had their children largely alive and well. But your comments about the results of war in general are spot on.

  • Thank you, I actually did know what the song was about and was actually making a comment to what someone else had posted a while back about the war now... well wars. This is such a beautiful song, and as woden198 said, "This song is far ahead of it's time." And even still today, it rings true.

  • The song is actually about the organization called Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo who spoke out about the human rights violations that went down in Argentina under the junta government in the 1970s. These crimes were also backed the the U.S. god bless that country.

  • @GShepardP : Please remember that the vast majority of the U.S. public were, and still are, completely unaware of any link between the the coup and the covert opps of the U.S. government. Remember, the majority of the U.S. public did not support the Iraq invasion, but the Bush administration went forward with it anyway. Most of us do what we can to stop these actions, or, at the very least, call attention to them.

  • "Please remember that the vast majority of the U.S. public were, and still are, completely unaware of any link between the the coup and the covert opps of the U.S. government"

Yes, those people are known as REPUBLICANS.

  • @twochordcool: OK, that was funny. I love me some Republican bashing. But I was only 16 when JT was released. As liberal as I was/still am, I had no clue about death squads. In fact, I remember seeing them live in Chicago in '87 wearing a pair of Reeboks. I didn't know Reebok had ties with apartheid until Bono started naming questionable companies at that show. I was so embarrassed.

  • @twochordcool Covert cold war policies had no party affiliation. Ever hear of the Bay of Pigs? Was JFK a secret Republican too?

  • @LesGomez Sorry buddy - this can be directly linked to anti-democracy / anti-socialist / pro-capitalism CIA policies in Latin America - policies which conservatives support and liberals do not.

  • @twochordcool Sorry, I'm independent, so you're barking up the wrong tree. The truth is that after the Cuban missile crisis JFK and LBJ kept the coups going through all the 60s in Latin America. BOTH parties have gone a long way to screw things up. Regardless, how exactly did the Soviets totally escape blame? Anyway, speaking of pro-capitalism policies, U2 is doing pretty well at 1/2 billion assets, don't you think? :)

  • @LesGomez Well political parties have changed an awful lot in 40 years. Look at Nixon's Southern Strategy. I guess our human rights violations during the Cold War were pretty horrific all along, But I'm pretty sure Reagan's foreign policy in Latin America was especially bad - at a time those people were fighting for democracy and fairness we were on the flip side of that. And on a side note, Reagan was pretty chummy with Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein through the CIA.

  • @LesGomez And I'm totally cool with capitalism and U2 being successful, but I would prefer a brand of capitalism where people didn't fall through the cracks, get taken advantage of and were paid a fair day's pay for a fair day's work - not a system in which a relatively few people have mountains of money while the masses starve on the streets.

  • @twochordcool "Masses starving on the streets" is a very good description of countries where capitalism is not allowed and the government/dictators are in control of the populace. Capitalism has brought more people out of poverty than any other economic model in history. Sorry, but the leftist/communist class warfare thing is total B.S.

  • @twoods999 You're clueless and misinformed at best. The ONLY class of people to have done better in the US in the last 30 years are the VERY rich. Soak that in for a minute: the VERY rich are the only group of people to have done better in the US in the last 30 years. And the tax code favors them. And the middle class is falling apart. Socialism works quite well when not stained with corruption, thank you very much.

  • @twochordcool Hey clueless and misinformed. Your an idiot. Socialism is a failure every it has been tried. Look at Europe - your model - collapsing. Your great Healthcare model under the UK - bankrupt. You want rich to pay for the poor. I have never been hired by a poor person. Obama wants this country to be defenseless, weak, and everyone equally poor.

  • @micmac1972 Yeah, that's what I thought - how do you like them apples?

  • @twochordcool Socialism HASN'T failed everywhere it's been tried - that's just a Rush Limbaugh talking point. I have more faith in things getting fixed and put back on course in Europe than I do in the US. You think capitalism is so great with a collapsing middle class, the wealth of the top 1% going up 280% in the last 30 years, Wall Street geting record bonuses after they were bailed out by taxpayers, and corporations having control of our politicians and electoral process? You're a fool.

  • @twochordcool talking points huh? americas problems arent based on one thing, in fact the opposite spectrum of wall street is a serious problem, lazy, manipulators of a system founded when the USA had a work ethic and honor system. icant go anywhere without seeing low class moms with more kids than they can handle, ready with their access cards. the US crisis is a direct result of the housing crisis, which is a direct result of programs designed to give loans to people who otherwise who not had.

  • @twochordcool u r just as idiotic. yes rush has his blind followers but u r also a blind follower, albeit the other spectrum.i personnaly witness poor and un educated persons shooting out more poor kids, future criminals, because people like you insist on help for them.

  • Wasn't it Chile?

  • No, Argentina.

  • think of the mothers of those on the opposite side as well. They are fighting for what they believe to be right, just as the other side does. In the end there is no winner in war only broken hearts and bloodied earth.

  • musicman7505, read a book about it before you come with a comment!

  • I love the beggining melody to this song it's so relaxing... its a beautiful song

  • Some individuals, would never understand. War is horrible, it explores some deep, dark psychological territory within man's nature. However, men and women are willing to put themselves within that position to protect and secure us, from those who are willing to destroy everything you hold valuable.

  • There is always more then one side of the Story. War might be a the last possible way to biring Humanity. I live in germany and without the War i would still ive in a dictatorship with some of the cruelest law's ever seen on this planet. So i am thankfull for this war, even after losing more then 15 relatives, some Soldiers, some mere children.

I would love to live in a world where Wars wont be needed, but it is in Human's nature that "the strong" wil try to rule "the weak" by force...

  • Certainly a support the troops against the war attitude is a viable opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • is that supposed to be chronological? because the Bolshevik revolution was near the end of WWI and the only deaths from the nuclear age are during WWII(not counting nuclear reactor accidents)

  • my face is red .. i stand corrected.i was pissed as a skunk anyway.shalom.

  • yes

  • I agree. Brothers killing brothers for what? Power, all those mothers who lost their sons for a battle between power. I hope all those who lost their lives rest in peace.

  • i think this is the most political song ever,

which doesnt necessarily mean its bad

    LOVE THE JOSHUA TREE

  • Absolutely love this song..and U2.xx

  • I think the first time I heard this song I literally cried.

  • For me, it was more when I found out what it was about (I can never follow lyrics the first few times), but I agree with your sentiment.

  • i agree wit youvebeenthunderstru ;(

    its sooo sad!!

  • @youvebeenthunderstru yes it's true! no other one song is moving like this

  • London Calling - The Clash

    Rattle and Hum - U2

    Reckless- Bryan Adams

This song is excellent. U2 love em or hate em you gotto admire their song writing talents,

  • (tears)

  • How many children have you taken from their parents so sleazy and evil Southern volunteers and their fatling slaves can play with them?

My entire family was knocked out at age 14 and replaced for what? Why so many thousands? So ya'll can feel powerful!

You ought to thank God that your own children/grandchildren never have to go through that!

Someday things will be settled and I swear to God you will not leave here alive!

Vengence is mine sayeth the Lord!

  • "The Lord" made slavery and melestory possible, so he is responsible in the first place. He basicly gave a toddler a gun and said 'if you don't shoot yourself, you can have eternal happiness'.

  • You need to be carefull in how you use that. You do not want to take it out of context and make it mean something that it does not mean. You are right a lot of people will not make it out of here alive but some will. The Lord will "punish" the earth in the end, amd many will be here to see it, unfortunatly.

  • i think one of the best things in life to do is respect everyones belifes don't judge and dont discuss religion or politics with people because it only ends up being an endless argument so just enjoy the music and you dont have to bring religion into it

  • This was always my favourite U2 song. It must be a 'mother' thing. I like that they keep the lyrics short and to the point, instead of pontificating too much and indulging their own egos. This is the most poignant U2 song by a mile, I love its intensity.

  • Classic song, like the rest of the CD and the rest of their music around this time period.

  • mono14's kids are emo freaks!! mono14... gross name... luvin this song tho 1na my favs u2 is amazing... listen to "where the streets have no name" or "Running to Stand Still" both are other great songs from this album. however all songs from this album are truly great

  • great song but the intro coulda beeen a little less time wise.

  • Joshua Tree (1987). Fantastic album and song!!

  • One of their best

  • you hear their heartbeat.

  • Born in '72, its hard to argue U2 as the band of my generation, and although I struggle to pick their best album,....start to finish, artistically, politically and "enjoyably", Joshua stands out as the best album of the 80s and perhaps with HipHop taking over the charts...the best album since. Can respect Jz and the Co.,...but clearly there has yet to be a band, black or white, to transcend the human experience the way U2 did, has, and continues to do, since War.

  • Great comment!!

  • @neocant1,wow, good stuff. remember that folks were born after you.

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

(U2 LP's October, War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, etc)

  • "BGM"(1981) by YMO(1978-1983)

includes "Cue", "1000 Knives", "Mass", "Music Plan", "Ballet",etc.

  • no offense different tastes , but i never could stand metallica....

siamese dream has its moments, but lacks in continuity, it doesn't have the strength from beginning to end...

but like i said different tastes

  • well if we all liked the same things then life would be pretty dull my friend. you cant beat individuality, thats why i dont mind my kids dressing the way they do, it seperates them from the crowd.

  • you make a good point there mono14

  • Pure class, one of their finest songs!

  • hi guys me again,

this is without a doubt one of the top 3 albums of all time

    beginning to end

since it seems there r so few of us on this particular "thread" wanna post suggestions to each other?

my top 3 albums (no set order)

    U2 - Joshua Tree

    Pink Floyd - The Wall

    paul simon -graceland/ ?

  • yeah, gd shame that there are not more fans of the thread. U2 is the quintessential band of my generation. And I use that word only for them. But for those who fear they don't get enough credit, as a follower from I am afraid to say 8th grade, 1986, on...now I can see as an adult how they will receive predo
