I've had the pleasure of growing up listening to Mark Knopfler thanks to my parents, who played Dire Straits albums all the time while I was little and then getting interested in his music again later as a young adult. Love this music!
Mk always knows what to play but what is more important is that he knows when NOT to play' Playing a zillion notes at lightning speed pales to MK's ability to create that mood with just the right amount that draws you in to the song. Yeah. It's like that.
For me, the beautiful thing about Mark's music is that it has never been fueled by drugs, violence, anarchy, etc. So many people think that you need to get high to make good music, but if you rely purely on drugs for your inspiration then you're not a proper musician (Hendrix and Clapton did some great stuff sober).
Going dweedely-dweedely up and down the neck with some kid's Hallowe'en costume on isn't music - it's a circus. Playing with your heart, with your soul...that's what counts.
Day without his songs is impossible for me...... this song reminds me the days of our last president election with blood and victims.....Mark wish you hold a concert in my country IRAN......
@ThePreciousguitar87 I followed Mark since the first DS album - and i will keep on following him and his great music. It´s just like wine, it getting better and better.
Fantastic song.!!.. This would go great with his Kingdom Come "I got my very own antitank gun" (Always wondered if that was a Barrett or a Boyz)...Mark has done a lot of other songs with similar themes: "ride across the river" and "brothers in arms" "Done with Bonaparte" to name a few...
@RetroJenny Cannot expect the younger musicians to make music like this. If this year was 1977 even MK could not make music like this. Suggesting that younger people can do this is ridiculous. Bit like asking a 19 yr old to fly a big airliner across the Atlantic...impossible
@RetroJenny All of the people that play on this song are around 50 yrs old. This song is a six piece set...that is about 200 years of top line music experience. The equipment used here is top notch as is the production. The younger musicians can and do make good music but there is always an influence or direct instructional help. MK had no help...
What is it about British Artists (Be it musicians or actors/actresses) that just puts them Above and Beyond everybody else. They just keep Rocking if u ask me. Keep it on the up and up always.
Some shit went down in past but songs not about that, its about being prepared. The just in case mentality. So MALE. The animal-preparedness- use-of-ones-time. A post 9/11 song if there ever was one, but so far afield of that, not that trite. Deft use of suggestion triggers you to fill in blanks or just be ON EDGE. Fun can be had but only on cusp of menacing threat--from weather/ nature, returning goons/revenge seekers, or the past (memory, which opens song into even wider metaphor).
