Caldwell showed some great mental toughness reversing what seemed to be sure take downs for Metcalf. Whatever the history was, Caldwell really dominated as much as someone could in an NCAA championship final.

I really don't think either of these guys showed much class. Alot of people would have celebrated too. However after gassing and injury time its rediculous to do back flips. As for Metcalf he definitly shoved him after time was out. Saying he was wrestling to this whistle is rediculous. Its obvious that he isn't looking for points with that shove. I've seen exhausted and injured kids win and be excited but none of them could have pulled out a bunch of gymnast moves.

He always bothered me for some reason and the push at the end was really stupid. I saw there was still time left on the clock when Caldwell started celebrating so Metcalf was right to keep going after him and Caldwell was wrong for celebrating too early. It still looked bad for Metcalf but I think it looked worse than it really was.

Probably could do without the backflips but to the victor go the spoils. Probably could do without the push from Metcalf too. He could have seriously hurt Darrion and I believe he got off easy due to his storied pedigree in NCAA D1. At this level everyone is aggressive and wants to win, but that's not an excuse to throw discretion to the wind. He is a representative for the sport and should have shown more restraint.

well, by the looks of it, at 1:20 is when the clock runs out, and Caldwell still has his feet on the ground, and if you notice, the TV's clock is like 1 or 2 second behind the real clock, so it might of even ran out before that, and the ref does try to grab metcalfs arm when he runs after caldwell.... i am not siding with caldwell, even though i like me a good upset.. i do agree that maybe a flip is unecessary, but when you have that much adrenaline in your body, why not?!
Both of these wrestlers were in the wrong. Caldwell shouldnt of ran around the mat like a little sissy and do flips and metcalf shouldnt of hit him. Iowa was docked a team point for Metcalfs behavior and I am not sure if NC State was docked a point for caldwells immature behavior. Caldwell is just better than Metcalf. Sorry. The last time they wrestled officially Caldwell not only pinned Metcalf, he spladled him. It was so telegraphed the Iowa coach was yelling "Watch the spladle!". To top it off, you have Metcalf acting like a sore loser. Even the referee tried to restrain him. Reminded me of that NHL hockey player who attacked another player after he scored a goal. The best part of the match was watching Metcalf lose-again.
That push was a complete douche-like move. Integrity, the guy is a hard worker, but also a poor sport. He wrestled his hardest, but that OBVIOUSLY wasn't good enough here. There is no other excuse. Caldwell was just stoked to be an NCAA champion! He even gives Metcalf props at the end of the match.
The best part of this entire match was the push by Metcalf. Darrion Caldwell made the wrestling world so embarassed by having no class, I am so glad Metcalf sacrificed his integrity to make Caldwell look like an idiot. In a few years this match will not matter because Caldwell is a humiliation, and Metcalf will go places with his wrestling style.
I don't care if you lost or not or if you didn't appreciate his celebration but that push at the end was not only a douchebag move but it was clearly after the whistle! I'll be rooting for this guy to lose again and again!

I really don't think either of these guys showed much class. Alot of people would have celebrated too. However after gassing and injury time its rediculous to do back flips. As for Metcalf he definitly shoved him after time was out. Saying he was wrestling to this whistle is rediculous. Its obvious that he isn't looking for points with that shove. He could have easily left the mat the bigger man but instead it ends up with an arrogent, cocky victor and a sore loser.

@idropbombes It isn't irrelevant. If he had lost the match the break time he got becomes irrelevant. If he was really that tired and was actually injured he wouldn't have been doing back flips. I've seen kids do a lot of celebrating before and rarely thought it was bad. You can agree with me about Metcalf being a sore loser but not about Caldwell. I've seen exhausted and injured kids win and be excited but none of them could have pulled out a bunch of gymnast moves.

Of course they both get a rest. Whats the point of conditioning then? When one guy gets tired we both take a break? No. Caldwell admitted that he knew he needed to score early because Metcalf was better conditioned and would come back late in the match.

@idropbombes My point is that Metcalf's edge in conditioning was a big factor and the break took away that edge. It may not have changed the outcome. I never ever liked Brent Metcalf. He always bothered me for some reason and the push at the end was really stupid. However I doesn't blind me to the fact that Metcalf was making a comeback due to superior conditioning and Caldwell took a break because he was tired. Celebrating isn't a big deal if you don't call fake injury time for a breather.

Had Caldwell not tried to showboat and acted in a more mature manner, he would not have gotten pushed during his childish celebration.

I saw there was still time left on the clock when Caldwell started celebrating so Metcalf was right to keep going after him and Caldwell was wrong for celebrating too early. It still looked bad for Metcalf but I think it looked worse than it really was.

Probably could do without the backflips but to the victor go the spoils. Probably could do without the push from Metcalf too. Whistle was blown and clock out so he really can't say he needed to push him either. A bit of poor sportsmanship on both sides really. Wrestling doesn't need either. There are enough showboaters and late hits in football and basketball.

Metcalf is the better wrestler but anyone who has ever wrestled should know that the better wrestler doesn't always win.Caldwell wrestled the match of his life and for all those who feel bad for Metcalf too bad. Metcalf is probably in the top 5 to 10 wrestlers to ever wrestle in The NCAA and that is even more reason for Caldwell to "OVER CELEBRATE." Nobody gave Caldwell much of a chance in this match and this win probably ranks in the top 3 upsets in NCAA Wrestling history. Nice jobe Caldwell!!!

Caldwell didn't "pull off a miracle". He knew what was in the cup and he still drank from it. That's what champions do. I'm a little disappointed to see Metcalf go out as a sore loser. Metcalf was acting like a collegiate ncaa wrestler. what I mean by that was that he was constantly being aggresive because there was still time on the clock when caldwell decided to do his little acrobatic stunts (which i find his ability to do so humorous considering he needed to stop the match earlier due to back pain......). caldwell is a great wrestler, but perhaps his showboating was a bit much. great match nonetheless

@gleetron metcalf absolutely was the sore loser. observe when time was called and the whistle was blown. Metcalf pushed him after both. He could have seriously hurt Darrion and I believe he got off easy due to his storied pedigree in NCAA D1. At this level everyone is aggressive and wants to win, but that's not an excuse to throw discretion to the wind. He is a representative for the sport and should have shown more restraint.

@gleetron still at the whistle Metcalf pushed him which was wrong and Darrion his "acrobatics" Metcalf look at him like he was dazed, i would tackle Darrion during his acrobatics not when the whistle blows, just saying.

@songsmithsounds ya, up north it really wasn't that bad of medicine swallow. I mean, Iowa did win still win the team title, and followed it up with another one the next year with 3 individual titles. But hey congrats on your 1 national champion since 1995.

i think most of yalls arguments are race based issues... cuz i GUARANTEE if the shoes were on the other feet not too many ppl would complain about Metcalf doin a flip but instead how Caldwells BLACK ASS threw him down ( lol im black by the way ). i've seen worse showboating in way less important matches that was not talked about. Some ppl look for ANYTHING to bitch about. but good job to both westlers & shoutout to DC for that throwback/classic win. NARLEYYYYYYYY!!! check our songs out too lol.

well, by the looks of it, at 1:20 is when the clock runs out, and Caldwell still has his feet on the ground, and if you notice, the TV's clock is like 1 or 2 second behind the real clock, so it might of even ran out before that, and the ref does try to grab metcalfs arm when he runs after caldwell.... i am not siding with caldwell, even though i like me a good upset.. i do agree that maybe a flip is unecessary, but when you have that much adrenaline in your body, why not?!

Both of these wrestlers were in the wrong. Caldwell shouldnt of ran around the mat like a little sissy and do flips and metcalf shouldnt of hit him. Iowa was docked a team point for Metcalfs behavior and I am not sure if NC State was docked a point for caldwells immature behavior. It didnt matter anyway cause Iowa won the team title and Iowa won this year AGAIN!!! Go HAWKS!!!

Caldwell is just better than Metcalf. Sorry. The last time they wrestled officially Caldwell not only pinned Metcalf, he spladled him. It was so telegraphed the Iowa coach was yelling "Watch the spladle!". To top it off, you have Metcalf acting like a sore loser. Even the referee tried to restrain him. Reminded me of that NHL hockey player who attacked another player after he scored a goal. The best part of the match was watching Metcalf lose-again.

That push was a complete douche-like move. Integrity, the guy is a hard worker, but also a poor sport. He wrestled his hardest, but that OBVIOUSLY wasn't good enough here. There is no other excuse. Caldwell was just stoked to be an NCAA champion! He even gives Metcalf props at the end of the match.
Darrion Caldwell = epic beast. Period.

The best part of this entire match was the push by Metcalf. Darrion Caldwell made the wrestling world so embarassed by having no class, I am so glad Metcalf sacrificed his integrity to make Caldwell look like an idiot. In a few years this match will not matter because Caldwell is a humiliation, and Metcalf will go places with his wrestling style.
