@TheClimbinExperience I have to agree (being English). When I was at school (many years ago) we learnt this stuff at age 14-16 for O-Level Maths, not A-Level (age 16-18). I looked at A-Level syllabuses about 18 months ago - at least 50% of the content are things we did at O-Level 25 years ago, and most of the rest was *basic* calculus that would take a reasonably intelligent person 2-3 weeks to learn. And people say there is no dumbing-down of A-levels...
You're doing a fantastic job! I am currently a GCSE student, I am on A grades. I was very worried about my AS-Level Maths in the future, as well as my Chemistry and Biology. But I find it very easy, I know all of this already, I don't know how, because this subject isn't in GCSE. Anyway, I want to get A's in my A-Levels; I want to go into Medicine. So far so good. A's all around in my GCSE's cannot wait in till I get into A-Level!
You know at 6:12 you done -x + - 8x and got 7x aint it meant to be -9x because -1x+-8 is -9 because ur taking away?? need to make sure because otherwise i wouldn't be learning..
@nishy0895 no fella 7x was right. -x - -8x = +7x. remember he added the + sign to make it easier (apparently) however i see how this can make it more confusing
I really found the beginning about polynominals really helpful but I had a question as I'm not sure if I didn't understand it or whether it was a mistake (as others have pointed some out):
@4:54 you subtracted nothing from 3x^3 and got 3x^2?
I did core math's 2 times and never could succeed, i don't know why i always study and i try very hard, but i don't know what happens no one could help me, and i really want to go to university but i'm not good at math, what do you think i should do if i can ask ?
Thanks for the vid:) Don't worry about all those childish comments. They are making a big fuss over minor careless mistakes. Hope the next vid won't have careless errors you have my support:)
No offence, but the many, many mistakes you make in this video do not fill me with any confidence in your tutoring skills at all... You make far too many obvious, overt and frankly schoolboy errors. It is not a good advertisement for yourself as a teacher, and my advice would be to re-film this, Correctly. The only thing this video really does is push people away when they realise your mistakes...
What grade A/AS level is this? It was mainly just simplifying and expanding standard equations. I was expecting it to go onto something a bit more complicated like expanding (x+3)^5.
@mathstutorbiz - comparing 1:23 and 1:41 you added the 6X^2, but then took away the 3X^2, then at 1:50 you added 3X^3, why did you take away 3X^2, how did you know to add the 3X^3, I'm not clear on how to tell which sign to use between polynomials in the sum, please help me?

We are really lucky to have someone doing this here in youtube, it's very helpful. My teacher is clever but he doesn't like to explain much as he assumes that we know stuff like this from GCSE (We do but we forget hehe) and he's very strict too. When teachers are strict we find uncomforatble to ask questions to them. Thank you very much sir I understand so much better here than in my lesson. Doing C1 OCR this Jan 09th 2009. Cheers
.Also for the final question I get 12+xsquared+2xcubed.I progress at a slow pace but I do like to be sure, will be buying your tutorials at the end of the month your sincerely Ian Robinson.
.the answer given is 12x,should this not be 12x squared. If i assume a value of 2 for x I get [4x2][3x2]=48 . 12x=12x2=24. 12x squared= 12x2x2=48. I notice that you simplyfy to 12x -10x -42,this would simplyfy further to 2x-42 ,this leads me to belive not squaring the 12 x was an oversite. The answer then that I get is 42ycubed+56ysquared 12xsquared-10x-42
Dear Sir,just a line to thank you for these great video, I am thinking of doing an AS level course in the spring as a mature student,I am having trouble with the multiplication of polynomials particularly the equation 7ysquared[6y+8][4x+6][3x-7] The first part being then, using your method 7y squared[6y] assuming a value of 3 for y,I get a result of 1134,yet42y squared is equal to 378,but 42y cubed is 1134.also the second part of the equation [4x][3x].
Alevel covers a bit of everything algebra ,trigonometry, calculus, statistics, mechanics etc but claculus is more specialized it just about calculus and nothing else for more info message me or leave a comment on my channel and i will reply when i have time
To the people who are so critical of an easy mistake to make: It would be interesting to see how many people noticed the mistake without mathstutor pointing it out. Personally I thought it was just his handwriting. If they are so good at maths then why are they watching his videos? lol
Stop whining about mistakes. When your mind isn't fully focused on maths it's easy to make little errors. Now, would you say that when someone's concentrating on recording a VIDEO and giving a FULL verbal narrative, they are going to be concentrating fully on the maths? The answer is obvious - no. So long as people are aware that there ARE mistakes, it's nothing to be worried about. So quit whining.

Fix it, dont be so stubborn, you can remove this video and redo it, with all the silly mistakes fixed. This is not a joke or fun video it is educational, and you have a responsibility
In case someone missed them, there are mistakes at:
Time 6.50: 7y^2 X 6y = 42y^3
Time 7.20: 4x X 3x = 12x^2
Time 9.18: 12x + x^2 + 2x^3

Hehe... You could make it a game of spot the "deliberate" mistakes!
Awesome video! I'm trying to teach myself A-level Maths and your videos will really help! So thanks! =D

With just over 100 video clips on youtube I'm just not sure. Go to my web site mathstutorDOTbiz where all the youtube video clips are available AND you can see the "Full" versions of the lessons that are available AND the full contents in detail of all the DVD's.
I'm sorry to be pedantic but isn't the answer to the final polynomial multiplication 12+x^2+2x^3..... I wouldn't have said anything but my son asked me to to this particular problem and then told me I was wrong and showed me this video to prove it..:-)
you are right at 9:03 there is a mistake, 12 + x² + 2x³ not 12 - x² + 2x³ . One of my silly slips. Read other comments, not one of my best days. However it gets us all talking, so I hope you agree, no bad thing. Good luck to your son in his studies. mathstutor
yes true. If you read back over others comments you will see I made several silly slips in this video clip. Had an off day!!! I could remove the clip, but hey why not show mistakes.
thank you so much for the help, i open my math revision guides and can't seem to follow them but when i watch your video's they provide me with loads of help and make me believe that i can do the maths. you make it so much easier to understand. thanks again. =)
id just like to show my appreciation you have simplified what used to be a very confusing subject so thankyou... also your vids on differentiation and integration were just as helpful :)
size or signs???? changing the signs on the bottom line and then adding gives the same result as "subtraction"..... have another look and listen. mathstutor
you are amazin i feel that im gonna actually pass my first exam next month polynumials are so easy once you know how i like the way you line them up thats saves so much hassle of re writing all the f(x) g(x) equations and makes it simpler to understand
very clearly explained and the techniques you explained are really useful and completely valid even when silly mistakes which we all make 100 times a day are made. Thanks for posting the video.
well done, check back to others comments and you will see this has been spotted before. I could remove the video clip, but I think there is no real problem. We all make silly slips and others can learn from them. mathstutor
I'm not a maths genious but my son is. He passed his AS Level maths last term and is now on the extended level for this year, and is also doing Level A2. I'm very proud of him!
really? It is the way I was taught to do it, and taught others for 39 years...... and all teachers over the years in my department have used that form of x. If you use x for x ..... it can be misuderstood as a multiplication sign. mathstutor.
I understand the reasoning...just odd, I have a BS in Chemistry and never saw/ or heard of that until now. We always used dots to indicate multipication "x"s.
i do "x"s exactly the same.. it eleminates the chance of being confused about a multiplication and an X, its jus one less thing u need to take care of
oh dear, you are right..... must have been a late night session... I wonder if I should remove this clip with the silly slips..... but then we can learn by others mistakes.... mathstutor
well done, if you look back over others comments you will see this has been spotted before. I could remove the video clip, but I think there is no real problem. We all make silly slips and others can learn from them. mathstutor
............................ I will bear your suggestion in mind...... when I have the time!!!! the preparation for my videos does take SOME time... and the odd slip will always get through. mathstutor
yes well spotted, silly slip on my part. should be 42 y cubed. I always told my students that I would do my best, but never said I was infallible. mathstutor
'So, 5x^4 + 3x^3 + 7x^2 + x - 1. Another example...'
I stopped and thought 'Jesus, is that it?' xD

Should be 12xSq-10x-42
alexander76rw 4 years ago
There were a couple of errors in this video....4:52 3x cubed plus 0 is 3x squared?
7y squared times 6y is 42 y squared? 6:58??
4x times 3x is 12x squared not 12x(7:26)??
alexander76rw 4 years ago
Which lesson of yours talk about quadratic equations?
Terroristbc 4 years ago
Good question!

I wouldn't have said anything but my son asked me to to this particular problem and then told me I was wrong and showed me this video to prove it..:-)
jonnykkkkkkkkk 4 years ago
you are right at 9:03 there is a mistake, 12 + x² + 2x³ not 12 - x² + 2x³ . One of my silly slips. Read other comments, not one of my best days. However it gets us all talking, so I hope you agree, no bad thing. Good luck to your son in his studies. mathstutor

at 07:08, isnt 7y^2 * 6y =42y^3?
wypedsampson 4 years ago
yes true. If you read back over others comments you will see I made several silly slips in this video clip. Had an off day!!! I could remove the clip, but hey why not show mistakes.

i sort of got it but why or how did he change the size
pinero91 4 years ago
size or signs???? changing the signs on the bottom line and then adding gives the same result as "subtraction"..... have another look and listen. mathstutor

you are amazin i feel that im gonna actually pass my first exam next month polynumials are so easy once you know how i like the way you line them up thats saves so much hassle of re writing all the f(x) g(x) equations and makes it simpler to understand

you fogot that x times x is x squared and y times y squared equals y cube etc but thx for posting the vids very helpful

Thanks for making these videos, most people would laugh if I told them I was revising using youtube.
Maybe those criticising you for simple errors would like to redo all of your videos, since they themselves are free from making errors? Thought not.
Thanks.

it was slightly useful however so many simple mistakes made it was pretty unbelievable from a man trying to teach people maths

very helpful.. regardless of the mistakes in solving it, i get it now. :) thanks

very clearly explained and the techniques you explained are really useful and completely valid even when silly mistakes which we all make 100 times a day are made.

Most important is that you get the idea...So you can apply it to any example given.
WaleBoB 4 years ago
really? It is the way I was taught to do it, and taught others for 39 years...... and all teachers over the years in my department have used that form of x. If you use x for x ..... it can be misuderstood as a multiplication sign. mathstutor.
samioni 4 years ago
I understand the reasoning...just odd, I have a BS in Chemistry and never saw/ or heard of that until now. We always used dots to indicate multipication "x"s.
jemcghee 4 years ago
FYI: I've never seen anyone write the letter "x" like you do.
jemcghee 4 years ago
i do "x"s exactly the same.. it eleminates the chance of being confused about a multiplication and an X, its jus one less thing u need to take care of
addikaye03 4 years ago
your last answer was still wrong. It should be 12 + x² +2x³ not 12 - x² +2x³
tysen2003 4 years ago
oh dear, you are right..... must have been a late night session... I wonder if I should remove this clip with the silly slips..... but then we can learn by others mistakes.... mathstutor

dude this is pretty basic stuff , hardly constitutes as "Advanced", and videos on the hard stuff?
aryaldo 4 years ago
and also (4x+6)(3x-7) = 12x²-10x-42 not 12x-10x-42.
But still thanks for helping us A level students. BTW you should edit this video it may throw people off.
