What happened with England in the 70´s, why did not they go to the world cups of 74 and 78?

A bit unlucky , they drew Poland for 1974 comp who eventually finished 3rd and in 1978 comp they drew Italy in qualifying who, after eliminating England finished 4th, the world cup qualifiers were not seeded then and the world cups only had 16 teams in them.

Was this live on ITV then? I thought only Cup finals were live back then. Must have had a hell of an audience.

@mts1977 Yes, this was shown live back then, a very rare occurrence. Back then it was only the FA Cup final, the England v Scotland annual Home International game and the European Cup final that were shown live, all in the space of a few weeks in May and that was your lot for live matches with perhaps the exception of an England schoolboys game at Wembley now and again.
