I have usually prided myself with being able to tell which guitarist in Lizzy is playing any given solo.Talking about the Bad Reputation album however,I am unsure as to whether Robbo or Scott played the superb ,bluesy lead near the beginning of 'Dear Lord'.The playing happens over the choir -like effect of Mary Hopkins Visconte's voice.I wish that this particular piece of playing was more prominent in the mix.I would guess that Robbo may have been playing here but I am not sure .
I was a huge Lizzy fan in the 70's & 80's. The song uses the 2nd mass migration of Irish after/during the "potato famine" (actually a genocide) to America in search of "fools gold."He then uses this as simile to describe the ongoing search for the illusive and often destructive American dream. Great metaphor w/vulture claws. Great intro & yes, solo too.
THIN LIZZLY rips your heart while rock'n your soul! Great Band!!!
Anyone ever notice that the guitar rhythm in the verse is the same as Boston's More Than A Feeling? Both released in the same year...I'm not comparing stupid...certainly THIN LIZZY blows it out! Just saying.
@keenanX1 Yeah,Scott Gorham played some of the tastiest solos during Lizzy's heyday. Many of his best solos were on album tracks such as 'Southbound','Running Back','Freedom Song','Fighting','Old Flame',the classic 'Dancing In The Moonlight','Dear Lord' and a later song 'No one Told Him'.I remember Scott saying in an interview that he rated 'Downtown Sundown' as his favourite solo .I believe that all of these except 'No one Told Him' were played on a Les Paul Deluxe .
@TheHumbuckerboy I hear ya ma Brosion! You are right on but don't forget that Bad Reputation was practically a Scott Gorham solo LP as he contributed greatly to the wrighting and played 80% of the solos. That was all due to Brian Robertson f-ing up his hand. Scott answered the call beautifully as always...Mr. Melody. Respect goes out to all who still regonize this great band's contribution!
Thanks so much for posting this version, as you say it is pretty close to the album version but stioo different - I couldn't improve on your comments on this :)
saw Lizzy three times and feel VERY lucky, will live with me till I leave the planet
never really got the credit they deserved and after the classic line up with BR, they went a bit downhill but only because of all the turmoil and over indulgence that success afforded them SHAME
I've never been much of a Thin Lizzy fan, but I've noticed over the years that Wild One, She Knows and this track are basically the best fucking songs written in the 1970's, PERIOD. Stuff just warms the cockles of my heart, while I drunk drive my burnt orange t-top fire bird down the open road to score some more heroin. And why is this track NEVER on classic rock radio? Just criminal.
This is my favorite Lizzy song. It's so damn smoothe it makes me wanna kick someone's ass while simultaneously dropping killer game on the world's hottest women. I'm in a band called A Feel Good Assignment...if you want to talk about music and Lizzy via a music blog go to our band website/music blog which is: (our band name).com
@dogwithawigon Dog, that's just fuckin' poetic man, thanks to you and ALL the LIZZY fans for posting songs and comments, I LOVE YOU GUYS almost as much as I love THIN LIZZY!!!!
@dogwithawigon hey could you tell me what that last verse means exactly? i dont really get it what does he mean by the fox and then thunderous applause
@CapTainBuckAHOE I always thought it was the old age tale of the hero saving the damsel in distress - a classic literary device working well within this song (the Fox being Phil himself)

@123thinn Thanks for your comment but how do you know for certain that Scott played the bluesy solo close to the start of 'Dear Lord' ?

Songs don't get much better than this. People who have not really given Thin Lizzy and good listen are missing out.

No one writes a lyric like this anymore. That last verse is like having syrup poured into your ears whilst having your soul gently massaged. Perfect.
