Am I the only one? who thinks that there was a bit of sabotage? on the side of the Generals and Lieutenants? considering they are BRITISH!! and commanding a ROMAN army?
That was a truly cringeworthy episode of a great show. On a cringe scale, the bit where they put the roman legionaries into a tortoise formation is slightly worse than when Basil Fawlty gives a cheese box containing a rat to a hotel inspector. I laughed so hard I cried.
These were the worst guests on this show ever! The guy who was a gardener said at the beginning that he was a leader and he lead them to their deaths! He was hopeless.
These idiots have no comprehension of cooperation & are very rude to each other. Generals lead, Lieutenants listen & don't speak until spoken to hence, follow orders. They're so busy trying to get their point in they don't realise anything else?Begins right from the start when they're asked which role they should play?Don't you just want to shout "shut the up"? There is no articulation or respect for 1 another.Do these people actually act like this in reality?Equal # men, woman
@Kilooscarromeo Although, a very interesting show, i find it aggravating to watch. I've never seen it before. Is'nt it obvious the people they choose for this show have difficulty playing with others? The whole point of the show Social psychology
What went wrong? They attacked....they advanced out of their defensive terrain...this battle was the roman's to lose...thye didnt want to be flanked yet basically flanked themselves........
@CMDRFandragon well more things went wrong; i've fought similar battles, aggressively for strategic reasons (E.G. fighting through an army to get to a beleaugered city), and i won easy enough...
but i didn't have this magelomaniac next to me bossing me around (or trying anyway) and getting my good ideas overshouted... the woman alone would've coped just fine in my opinion...
@armandorivas82 They did that in the second season. They lost the battle of the Hydaspes river. They failed to set up the hammer and anvil after an impressive start and got stomped when they allowed elephants to get behind the lines. Even people who fight for a living have a hard time at this.
TalonMercenary, I think 'the colonel' there is speaking about the britons who were fighting for the real boadicca. I think he means that it is them who have never before heard of the word "archer"; meaning that they had no bows/arrows, nor any knowledge of how to fight against an army that would employ them.
I understand that the romans used this to thier advantage.
That's really strange. I had a dream last night that I was on this show with my 3 cousins. I had used the chariots and javelin throwers to force the Romans into that tortoise formation and lured them out into the open while a group of light infantry infiltrated the forest. Then the chariots and cavalry attacked the Roman reserve and surrounded the enemy as the forest infiltrators came in at the end, and we won. Ironic.
It is true but in short "lack of Ancient Tactics" like even a skilled modern general today necesserely could'nt do it much better and I bet a general today would even know what testudo is :P
ancient generals don't have the advantage of moderen technology like recon photoes, UAVs, and knowing exactly what is happening as it happens. great ancient generals are far better and have to be good
why in weasels did they abandon the heights? not only that they abandoned the narrow place where they could have won. But they left, formed a thin line, made a testudo in melee (diocy) and let themselves get split up and cut apart! I am so glad these people weren't at any real battles, they would completely fail.
I was more or less like that; for about 1 or 2 battles. After that, that, it's a routine of bombarding, pinning, flanking and chasing. Sometimes, the tactics change, but that's the basic.
1. the general people should play the game and practice a bit before actually doing this. We think theyre morrons but I think they just dont know how the engine works.
2. the guy that moves the pieces and throws them against each other should noot do that, he's scaring everyone. just pushing is enough but nO he has to hurl it so it hits everyone around him.
the show specifically chose people who had no idea of the game or have any tactical knowledge. that is the reason why it makes it interesting =) because if we, the ppl who knows the game, plays it then it will be boring
That's correct, we who play Rome, Medieval and possibly Empire over and over again, sometimes having to overwhelm the odds, we all know too well the mechanism. The tricks we can use to defeat the AI...
It's quite understandable that the average people who play here have no slightest clue of basic maneuver (flanking, force concentration, etc ....) or even the rock-paper-scissor relationship of units.
Finally someone said it but they were not playing against the AI they where playing against a person who has been told to do what the person did but in this battle was succesfull to taunt the Romans :)
In the 1st series the people picked had no gamein' knowledge to stop them using their gamein' skills, plus rome total war wasn't released untill a year after the first series so they couldn't have trained on it.
well, historically speaking (according to Goldsworthy's book: The complete Roman army), the Romans did counter attack Boudicca's charging infantry at the very last second, as to confuse them,
but even so they most likely held their formation, and this all happened at the original site, WHERE the team SHOULD have DEFENDED for the most part, with their flanks secured by the surrounding hills
I love how in the beginning they were talking about the Celts not having any strategy, and then utterly losing because they THEMSELVES had absolutely no strategy!
onli now they show "defeat imminent"? defeat was imminent b4 the match even started lol everythin they did was wat not to do in a battle lol they all needa play RTW
its not that they lie, its that the film makers are fricken arrogant, like in the directors commentary for Gladiator: "I don't care what historians say, this scene is cool."
I know the objective of a movie is to entertain and not just to be historically accurate, but as a history fan I go insane when i watch some of these movies. The charge of the Romans against the Germans in Gladiator? Horrible, what about throwing their pila or keeping formation?
Have you ever watched 300? As an action movie is not bad, but again, if you like/know history, you'll go insane. Phalanx formation apparently means running around swinging your doru like a moron.
Leonidas ordered everyone but the Spartans to leave. The Thespians stayed (and outnumbered the Spartans on the final day), as did the Thebans (though they were kept there by force).
One of the easiest battles you could ever fight. You're roman, you're outnumbered by ill-disciplined Britons. You have a bottleneck which you can block that negates their chariots. Let them come to the meat grinder and let the legions do what they do best. Why did the Spartans fight at Thermopylae. Because its a perfect bottleneck where superior any advantages superior numbers dissapear.
True. Many Roman footsoldiers also have pila (throwing spears) which could counter the British advance. The Roman general did let the hastati do just that.
As a general, you got to know that you can't let your anger get you and let your soldiers get into a trap. The only excuse is that this was maybe their first battle commanded.
I'm not being funny but they clearly knew the brits has not many missle troops and mostly swordsmen with their own agenda, and the should of used their quality to defeat them but fighting the brits where they could not deploy their number effectivly(so the brits could not surround them). The romans should of sat on the hill shooting their archers, and when close enough just pella(javalins)the brits, softening them up and then ingauge in concentration. then they would of won. lool gd vid thow
