A field guide's job is to educate tourists about the South African bush. Walking in the bush allows us to get closer to the finer details of nature- birds, trees, plants & grasses etc., and a lot of the time it's rare to meet any big animals. Of course, sometimes you do and we are trained to deal with it. Many field guides never have to shoot their gun at an animal in their career; it's only there for a last resort. This guide did well- he let the tourists observe and then soon backed out.

An Armed Guide on a walking safari in the Kruger Park - NOT......they are NOT allowed. This is in a Private Game Reserve OUTSIDE the Kruger Park. Game I am certain can traverse the whole area in and out of Kruger Park,as the fences between them have been removed, but to claim "in Kruger Park" is misleading. Balule and its constituents (Olifants GR) are a part of the Greater Kruger Reserve, but NOT the Park. Great video however and especially as Guard did not discharge his weapon.

It was a false charge, the humans out numbered the lion, and wont attack when out numbered. If it was a pack of lionesse, they would be dead and never of seen or heard them coming. 1 shot is not going to stop the lion especially a directly on. He is intentionally trying to achieve a charge from this animal so that is guests have this "amazing african experience" Its expected the lion will not follow through on the charge, they typically don't. But on the rare occasion they do, it will be shot and the only one to blame is the guide, he could avoid this situation. Do i actually want to kill an animal i supposedly care about and thus get a bigger tip or admire it from a distance

The lion was not necessarily testing them, if he wanted to kill them, he would've, he just didn't feel threatened enough. If it decides it wants to kill you, you standing or running really won't make a difference. The lion was older, so odds are it wouldn't have been susceptible to intimidation as perhaps a younger male might be.
