You are talking about price inflation vs. monetary inflation. We are currently seeing the over-expansion of credit causing price deflation. The Fed is attempting to keep prices up by inducing monetary inflation (creating more money). But, most of the money that is being created is still being held by the banks, it won't cause price inflation until it circulates into the overall economy and/or the deflationary trend ceases and the Fed is caught with rapid inflation; which will probably happen
Prices theoretically should adjust once the money works its way through the system and it is realized that it is less valuable, which can take some time. Sorry if this doesn't adequately answer your question.
If what you object to is the idea of taxes, of the government taking money from people, then my solution is this. 0% tax rate. It's easy. The government just needs a couple trillion dollar surplus, and then it can pay for everything with the interest it gets. This would also motivate it to keep interest rates as high as possible, and thus encourage savings.
Just know that we need the government like cars need stoplights.

I don't understand why Peter uses the word inflation as interchangable with the printing of money. Webster's Dictionary and Investopedia define inflation as, "The rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and, subsequently, purchasing power is falling." So if prices are not rising the purchasing power of the dollar is not falling, and we are not having inflation. Doesn't mean we won't see it in the future but we haven't seen it yet.

I agree high unemployment is correlated with low inflation, but an economy does not rquire inflation for anything. Likewise it does not require deflation. What is required is maximisation of use of all available resources in order to maximise the living standards of all people. The change in a price level can be a symptom of anything. Inflation can be good or bad, deflation can be good or bad. Focusing on prices is mostly secondary and missing the whole point in economic managemnent.

The story is that Persian Gulf states are in talks with Russia, China, Japan, and France to revalue the price of oil in a basket of currencies, including the USD. It will be interesting to see the performance of the Dollar over this week. And we'll see what the Fed with do with interest rates going into the year end.

I have a question I've been grappling over. With all the infusion of cash by the fed, shouldn't we see price 'inflation' at the store?
In terms of dollar$, in last 6 months all of the following have fallen in price: houses, rent, gasoline, and groceries.
Over the last 3 months I CLEARLY have seen the dollar falling and gold up...YET timber, cotton, dairy, livestock, oil etc.. are all flat or down.
When are we going to see $ price increases at the checkout line (real inflation)?

I don't understand why Peter uses the word inflation as interchangable with the printing of money. Webster's Dictionary and Investopedia define inflation as, "The rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and, subsequently, purchasing power is falling." So if prices are not rising the purchasing power of the dollar is not falling, and we are not having inflation. Doesn't mean we won't see it in the future but we haven't seen it yet.

Printing money causes inflation. The result is not immediate. There is a delay as the money trickles down through the economy, but the end result is the same ... higher prices due to more dollars chasing a limited number of products/services.

One problem though with your analogy that would have been a more realistic criticism of it is this... "Joining politics" to fight for change is going to do more than interrupt your career, because it will take more than one term to make the needed changes.
We'd need a majority of people like you in both house and senate to affect change in the time frame you suggest.

High unemployment is correlated with low inflation, every healthy economy needs inflation. Think of inflation as an indicator that demand is higher then supply, this is good because it keeps people employed, and balance sheets strong.

the u.s. had little to no inflation and did very well economically during the first 100 years of its history when it was on the gold standard. the last 100 years, after the monetarists got in charge, saw the dollar devalue by 95%, our standard living decline, eventually leading to bankruptcy.. even friedman, the father of monetarists, blasted the federal reserves' policies.

When pseudo-economists talk about the so called 95% devaluation of the dollar, ask yourself what has it devalued to? currency devaluation can only be measured against other currencies. Of course you cant buy the same amount of goods with $1 as you could 20 yrs ago, but this is due to inflation not devaluation.

Inflation is devaluatation of purchasing power. All currencies have devaluated against what they can generally purchase (goods). Therefore it's not really accurate to compare currency to currency.

I agree high unemployment is correlated with low inflation, but an economy does not rquire inflation for anything. Likewise it does not require deflation. What is required is maximisation of use of all available resources in order to maximise the living standards of all people. The change in a price level can be a symptom of anything. Inflation can be good or bad, deflation can be good or bad. Focusing on prices is mostly secondary and missing the whole point in economic managemnent.

Not sure if anyone noticed this, but from Reuters there are talks underway -- just preliminary discussions -- concerning continuing to value oil exclusively in USD. The story is that Persian Gulf states are in talks with Russia, China, Japan, and France to revalue the price of oil in a basket of currencies, including the USD. It will be interesting to see the performance of the Dollar over this week. And we'll see what the Fed with do with interest rates going into the year end.
