  • Thank you to my Senator for bringing to light the many, many positive aspects of President Johnson's terms. Its about time someone did.

  • @dannyd1572 before he did this we had full employment AND proverty was near non existent...

now after lbj's programs proverty is at an all time high and full employment... well thats near non existent now.

  • @sniped101 Not in my opinion. Eisehowers high tax of around 80% (yes 80%) allowed for growth during his era and into Kennedy's. When you tax people that much it works right away, however after too many years people's pockets become empty and if you don't do something fast it gets worse. The Great Society was a mixture of JFK, FDR and LBJ's ideas to prevent ANY sort of depression from happening again. And it has. (with the exception of George Bush's recession).

  • @dannyd1572 and it didn't prevent ANY sort of depression from happening so... that's the failure of it. you proved my point.

Taxing people 80% basically says that the government can handle 80% of your money BETTER than you can. Is that true?

  • @sniped101 It made sure that anyone who was at a disadvantage recieved a fair deal in life. I gurantee you that you and I at some point have benefited from the Great Society. Whether it was school lunch programs, enviromental regulations, truth in labeling, whatever. Can the government hand 80% ofyour money better? Well were the 1950's a better time than now? We built an interstate system didn't we. Were the 1990's a better time than now?We had the technology boom.

  • @dannyd1572 well why not give them 100% of our money then?

  • @dannyd1572 well i don't want to give 100% of my money to the government. Are you going to shoot me for it?

  • @sniped101 Who said anything about shooting? I'm a democrat- remember whe don't like guns and try to make peace through diplomacy.

  • @dannyd1572 I don't like guns either but if I wanted to use one for self defense purposes only, would you disagree?

  • @sniped101 That would absolutely be the last resort. I don't know why you would want to kill someone otherwise. People who say they want guns in their home to protect themselves are just fooling themselves. Most gun fatalities in the home are caused by carelessness- not intruders.

  • I wonder if Johnson could have been a top 10 president if it hadn't been for Vietnam. He did a lot of great things, but he will always have the shadow of Vietnam looming over his legacy.

  • @IcedEarth426 Oh yea...definately would have been top 10. I agree with you on that.

  • One of the truth American presidents...Thank-gof for Lyndon Johnson! Where would our country be w/o Presient Johnson's domestic programs...Longest substained economic rowth in American history!!

  • A great address, that all who think seriously about the great achievements of US progressive history should listen to. Senator Harkin, an outstanding figure, is precise and fair when he says that the demonization of the LBJ anti-poverty and Great Society programmes have been one of the right wing rhetorical triumphs of the last thirty years. Thank you Senator Harkin for a ringing blow for truth, a clear picture of the past, and a stirring summons to consicience for America's future.

  • Rhetoric? You are being too kind.

It is for the rich that republicans lie and circulate propaganda. This , senator Harkin explains it as it is. Why don't more

people know? Viet Nam, blinds people. If it weren't

for that LBJ would be one of the greatest. It is a hidden triumph for the Dems.
