He's like itzhak Perlman on cello... You see one video of him playing Bach.... With black hair and then look at the related videos a d there he is.. Playing the same song ... Sme hairstyle... Just old and grey lol
Yes we know what you learned in school. I did too. But its not like Bach wasn't human. its not like he didnt have emotions. He obviously loved music and must have been passionate about it. And I bet you, that he played his songs with emotion at least once in a while lol. no need to hate emotions and the fact that he had emotions lol.
I love the fact that you can hear him breathing, it really puts life into the music and it's one of the reasons I fell in love with Fournier's recordings
I coudn't agree more with you. One of the reasons the Danes are so 'over the moon' happy with their new concert hall is the fact that its acoustic is a 'state of the art'. The musicians as well as the public can hear every sound all over the hall. As you point out: it's a living hall with live music in it.
@mugge62 Tak for videoen! Men...
Teknisk muligt!
@Bazement258Studios you jut killed a lot of pices for me , for me the breathing interrups the music , and i didint knew about that until i read your coment , now i cant stop hearing it everywhere
Beautiful interpretation. I much prefer the smooth continuous bowing to play the phrases. It helps better express the fugal feel. Its how I learned that piece years ago when I played cello and how my teacher played it.
Never liked other interpretations with staccato bowing in the latter part of the phrases. When I first heard it played that way, I was shocked to find Yo Yo Ma as the cellist!
Here Mischa plays each phrase, then it's answer, then the next phrase. It's as a Bach intended.
@M0GHIT0Z because there are far to many idiots in this world who don't understand real music, so they listen to simple music instead. and what is more simple then the music made by a 16 year old kid who looks like he's 8?
I agree wih certain people about his earlier interpretations being better... but he made very clear his point of view when he finished playing. This is HIS bach, as he understand it today.
Maisky will always be one of the greatest cellist, with an originality that comes like fresh air in a world when many of today classical musician are manly interested in playing more in tune and faster.
What are you talking about? I have not commented this video for at least a year now! However I have uploaded the video last year in December. That's all.

@53donster LOL - are you saying he's doing random notes because the video is like half a second out of sync? You should pay better attention. He's definitely really playing this piece - and very beautifully, too.
Perhaps my favorite cellist...well Pau Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich, but they done playing on Earth... Thanks for posting. Very good qulity and great performance.
@TheKoodoos I disagree, I think Yo-Yo has a totally different style of expressing his emotion in his playing. I prefer Yo-Yo's version but I respect Mischa on a different level
@Cheeserguy Yo-yo rushes through his work 90% of the time to show off speed, Yo -Yo typically sounds staccato when in fact most classical pieces are meant to be legato. He has more of a robotic sound in comparison to Maisky who is extremely romantic in his interpretations. Yo-yo should stick to more country/eclectic-like music because Maisky outdoes him on ever level in the classical field.
@mugge62 Maisky has a really unique and strong personality, he always finds how to express himself in any kind of music in his own way. But I'm sorry... to do that in Bach is not allways the right move, and he absolutely can't be named as "one of gratest BACH interpreters" ... for this naming there stand Anner Bylsma and other deeply baroque music understanding cellists, but not Maisky... @NoiseOverMusic It is emotion in the romantic sense but this is somewhat inappropriate to Bach's music. Years of listening to different editions can open one's ears to what is appropriate in Bach's music. Maisky's playing, over the years, has become more and more exaggerated and romantic. I fear he is losing his intuitive view of Bach's music that he once had.
