I bet most of you didn't know that Herb Albert was the "A" in A & M Records. He is rich beyond compare and really didn't need to perform then or now. But his love for the trumpet still keeps him going. HIs is very smooth. Too bad they didn't have real Mexicans in the group. Made up mostly of Italians
well, your old man sure kicks butt on this one... ain't nothing "pure cheese" about this track, the problem is that the music of today has spiralled down into the abyss of mediocrity, most music today couldn't touch an effort like this
I have a few chuck findley recordings and this is my first vid of Bob although i heard he played trumpet as well. I must say he might be on the same level as Chuck but boy that chuck's sound is so amazing. I wonder how the two brothers compare up to each other cuz i know they are both killer players.
true!playing a brass instrument is way harder than guitar and do u kno y guitar is more popular? cause its easier i kno, i play bass, guitar and trumpet
i find bass the best the most enjoyable and entertaining but trumpet is by far the harderst out of the 3 and i hate admitting that lol ive been playing trumpet 2wice as long as ive been playing bass..
and u kno y a lot of people r called band geeks? cause theyre jealous and cant pick up a damn instrument
p.s. anyone catch bobby in this years accademy awards pit band? he's too humble to ever say ir, but I know it is a matter of great pride for him to have played in the band (under the legendary Bill Conti) in virtually every band section for the accademys for the last, wow, 20 years or so? I tell ya my heart fills with joy when I hear those perfectly executed solos and queues and watch from home everytime to see the brief facetime he gets every time.. Ok, enough gushing :) carry on :)
Brass sections do not get any better than the Academy Awards orchestra. Was it Baptist, Findley, Bergeron and Luening? I know George Graham used to do it before Wayne.
I once had the honor of playing second to your uncle Chuck. By the end of the concert my sound was breaking up trying to keep up with him on the bows music, when the chart had us alternating playing lead for eight bars. He's ferocious.
So cool to hear the comments both positive and negative.
I will prefice this by saying Im his kid, so take my opinion w/ a grain of salt. Bob Findley is a legend in my mind and he always made one thing clear to me.. there is a huge difference between 'Artists', 'Writers' and technitions. Bob is a technicion. you can put anything in front of him and hell play it. He's also my hero and the best pop a kid could ever want. So comparing him to Herb is moot in my eyes. Theyre cut of a different cloth
I don't know. Can Bob Findley arrange? Could he have made the largest record company in the world? Could he produce? Could he have had 5 top ten albums on the chart at once? hmmm. No doubt Bob Findley is superb, but lets not under estimate Herb Alpert.
Exactly how am I underestimating Herb? What do arranging, producing and owning your own record company have to do with playing trumpet. You missed my point entirely. Herb is a great musician but just not much of a trumpet player. All trumpet players know that. It's not an insult.
I don't dispute what you say. It's just a fact that Bobby Findley is one of the best trumpet players in the world for all around playing, and Herb is not.
okay, now playing trumpet has plenty to do with arranging, man. they seem isolated, but after a gig and your arranger (who plays along with you) and his band is chillin backstage, one of the players is grilled because "you missed my bridge, foo! it was da-da-dee, not da-da-doo!"
"i played da-da-dee, i got it, man, i got it!"
"naw, man, you played---lemme get my keyboard---see, da-da-doo! that's what you played!"
I remember this evening, ca. 1994, at Sweet Basil in New York - Art Farmer was playing, and Herb Alpert showed up to say hello during the break, and Art really didn't even seem to know who was. I was 22, and sitting at Art's table (how I managed that?). Herb's wife was there, too, and it was a little awkward, because Art said so little, or said it all with silence. I see Herb Alpert Foundation supporting Bill Moyers Journal on PBS now. I associate him with my granddad watching TV.
Chris, thanx for the words. As I was saying in a different post, why even compare? Bob is a technition, a 'player' sure he's written some great stuff but by and large he is a tech. Put a chart in front of him and hell play the shit out of it and elaborate w/ his own style and character. Herb is an artist, a writer, can we agree that these are different, exclusive skills?
I'd still say that your father was an artist. Just because Herb wrote the music, doesn't make what your dad did here in this vid anything less than art. He was plainly expressing himself.
Your comment has prompted me to gather data and verify if what you've stated is true. Well the results are in and you are incorrect. Bob is actually only 9.34 times as good as Herb and not 10 as you've stated.
Bob now playS with the James Last Orchestra. Had the pleasure of Bob's company during the latest James Last UK tour. Nice fella...and a great musician....but the hair is a 'little' bit more grey !!! Andrew UK
isn't that chuck findley. My high school did a concert and he came and played a few songs with us. That was in 2004. He was old, but he hasn't lost any of his skill, or talent on the trumpet. Awsome video.
Nope, its Bob Findley, older brother of Chuck Findley aka my pops. Chuck is an insane player as well, both are legendary in my eyes but of course Im biased (Bob's kid :) ) cheers for the kind words.
Jazzmanta,... Hey, I was there at the Maine Jazz Camp, too! Pretty cool scene - up in the woods, in Vassalboro, and here's this amazing session man from Pacific Palisades talking to us about "support" and if you have that you can play anything. Special guy, special times.....
This song is called "Panama" and originally appeared on the TJB lp "The Beat Of The Brass" (A&M). I believe it was composed by Julius Wechter, or was it John Pisano? Two wonderful composers. Mr. Findley is a spectacular trumpet player, and his solo on "Carmine" is unbelievable. That track appears on the "Coney Island" album. (A&M)
I believe he also did the solo work on Alpert's "Carmine," dedicated to ALpert's trumpet teacher, Carmine Caruso, who was also my teacher back in the 1970s.
Incredible playing! I too had the amazing fortune to study with your pop (and uncle) a couple of summers in the late 80's. Thanks for posting this and making me realize how lucky I was to have had the true privilege to learn from such a gifted player!!!
One of the most spectacular trumpet solos was your Dad's solo with the TJB on "Carmine" (for Carmine Caruso, who Bob and Herb studied with). I know this was on one of the TV specials (possibly this one). I'd love to see that posted.

Maybe your confusing "chops" for great trumpet playing. Herb wasn't flashy but he had a warm tone and played pretty dead on most of the time.
