this is the most pathetic example of coal mining i've ever seen. a science to do it safely?? i didnt see anything safe in the movie.+ poor managerial skills... arguement then sacking on the spot.. no safety glasses/ dust masks, " people do get hurt and you have to accept that"... you are an idiot mate!!!
@dayne683 "poor managerial skills... arguement then sacking on the spot" how is that poor i have Seen that several times & yes I have been sacked on the spot. Nothing poor about management he violated the authority & was fired, nothing out of the norm." no safety glasses/ dust masks" i dont think you have to wear the mask, & they might not be required to have glasses on in all jobs in the mine. did factory not always glasses
Big respect for coal miners...My Mom grew up in Coal City and Josephine WVA. My Grandfather and all of my Uncles were miners way before the safety regs in place today even existed. Regardless of the era, every coal miner comes from a rare breed of man. I know first hand of the work ethic they instilled in my family. There were all good men,
I don't give a shit how much safety you have, there's no way you can escape when 20 tons of rock suddenly fall on you or the tunnel fills with methane and ignites.
I got an idea why don`t one of you Liberal, City Boy mother fuckers fly first class right on up there to were this is being filmed. Wait till shift change and express to them how you think there toothless, inbred rednecks and see how many teeth you got when you leave THE HOSPITAL. When you out from behind your fucking desk job you might be able to see theres another world out there where people still work for living. Whether its in a mine, a farm, construction crew, etc...
Its a tough job. I go to Harlan KY rockcrawling every year and we see coal miners there all beat and banged up from the job they do. The show is cool and gives you a good insite. to what they go through. If you lived there and didn`t have a mom and dad to put you through some college coal mining is most likely what you would be doing to. These towns are small and jobs are hard to come by. For the geographical area they are in they probably do make decent money. Australia?high ass cost of livin
I wish they had picked a better mine. I think this show would have been more interesting if they filmed on a super section. Left vs Right side kind of deal. 7 cuts in a punch hole might be a big deal but at a bigger mines it aint nothing to see 10-12 cuts per side. Providing now down time on belts or equipment. The only upside I see of the show is people can see what we talk about when we talk shop. But it can't recreate the actual feeling of being underground.
@MrDevilintheflesh the reason they picked this one is because they thought it would get good ratings because of how unsafe it is. People don't want to see a big successful mine, they want to see a shitty mine worked in terrible conditions and have the drama and suspense of whats going to happen.
I know that coal mine is a little bad im not trying to be mean but they knock the power every 5 seconds I no its a new coal mine but still they really have alot of problems and i really wanna slap the guy that talks about what there doin next i gaurantee that the andy dude is not the best person to work the miner try havin a contest and see

Proud West Virginian right here ♥ Thank you so much to every single coal miner out there for doing what you do, especially to those here in my home state! God bless them all and their families! :)
It's about time for people to see how hard these men work and how they put there life on the line. I'm very happy that their hard work is starting to get recognize around the world. I am a coal miners daughter and I'm proud to be one. People like to dog what they do and the only reason why they do is because they know that couldn't last one day in a miners shoes, these men are hard working men and deserve the up most respect, My prayers goes out to every coal miner!
If you haven't been underground minning coal, then you HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. Until you have experienced what it is like under ground, you shouldn't assume it's just another job!
A coal miner is no better of a person than any other hard working American. It is blown out of proportion. This country works together and you cant say coal miners are more important than the farmers, the construction workers who provide roads and the equipment to process the coal, ect. ect.. I dont see how they honestly think they are a some type of special human being.
@drtfan4ever I am not sure that everyone considers them better. But i know that alot of coalminers put their life in danger to support there family, because like said in west virginia there isn't much else to do besides coal mining. So no they aren't a "special human being" but they are heros and to the ones that have died i look up to. I am proud to be a coalminers granddaughter (: nuff said.
@drtfan4ever Yeah, they provide a very important product, while working in a dangerous environment. Firemen and are regarded as heroes, but they're providing a service. The same can be said about people in the military. Personally, I don't regard coalminers as heroes either. I know quite a few of them and they're definitely not heroes. At the same time, I don't regard the firemen I know as heroes.
Whats the deal in West Virginia? I guess they don't have unions. If they do i guess they don't take their guys backs. That president of the company treats these guys like slaves. Luckily i'm in a strong union trade in the northeast and i have the ability to tell that boss to go F himself. I feel for these guys!! Wow!!
darn you boys got it made.just 7 cuts in 10 hrs.that mine looked pretty good.down here in virginia we run 12 to 15 cuts a day.looked like a top dawg pinner u guys were pinnin with.just redneckin yall tho.i luv my fellow miners.be safe:)
coal is what makes the world go around and it wont be long before it wont be coming from us but we have fought it off before and by god we can do it again so suck on that obama
It's a shame that American coal mines have such low safety standards and don't educate them very well. "People get hurt and you have to accept that". Not a good statement. In Australian coal mines, that is not acceptable and we do not consider it to be a dangerous job.
@MegaArchiebald Good for you. And Austrailia doesn't even produce half the coal America does, so STFU :-) You should check out the accident statistics in Austrailian coal mining and then come back and try to say it's not a dangerous job. If you want links to find the info, just let me know. Prick. :-D
@Garganchitha A word of advice to you-"It's better to be thought of as an idiot that to open your mouth and prove it". You obviously took the "burger flippin' job." American coalmines are nowhere near as safe as Australian coal mines. Our records over the past 20 years have improved beyond any other country. You do produce a lot of coal, but Australia exports 60% of the worlds coal. Perhaps that is why I have met with so many MSHA and Union representatives trying to adopt our legislation.
@Garganchitha I think you would be way out of your league to debate this with me. The unfortunate dilema MSHA face at the moment seems to be the integrity of statistics/sample/results. They see Mining companies as being too coorupt. It seems MSHA wish to adopt our systems, and hopefully improve American coalminers safety. Yes Australia have killed miners in the past, our last multiple fatality being Gretley in 1996. But come on, Sago 2006, Crandel Canyon, 2007, Upper Big Branch, 2010. Prick ;-D
@MegaArchiebald Blah Blah Blah. Mining is a dangerous job and you appear silly when you say that it is not considered dangerous "in Austrailia." People get hurt, and accident statistics show that.
Where in my comment did I say anything about deaths, Mr. Major League? :-P
@Garganchitha I didn't realise your accident statistics didn't include deaths. Perhaps we can compare "lost time injury frequency rates". And when you talk coal production, Hyundai make more cars than Ferrari, but what you you rather have? I pick quality over quantity. So fuck you, you burger flippin' redneck. Probably never been underground anyway! ;-o
@MegaArchiebald awful funny though your coal mines are made over here....yes i am from mcdowell county where they filmed the show and i worked for a fabrication company, we made tipples for australian coal mines....the coal here is one of a kind....your coal is worth nothing compared to what these guys pull out of the ground....
@TheFordsforme Yes I did and do think of those. Our coal mines vary from shallow (30 metres) to deep (600+ metres) coverage. Different coal types. Shale, sandstone, mudstone and conglomerate roofs. I have been to coal mines in both countries. What about you?
PROUD TO BE UMWA !!!!!!!!!!I worked in the Union for 8 years this place they show on tv is a shit hole.. compared to where i worked, we had 8 foot tops, diesel s-10s that we drove around, man it was nice ... that Hank wouldnt of gotten fired if he was one of us union guys...
@MegaArchiebald I work in a mine that is pretty close to the one on this show. They over dramatize things. And as far as coal mines go, the one on this show is one of the shittiest dog hole scab mines I've ever seen. Most coal mines do educate their workers, thoroughly. Hell, in WV you have to take an 80 hour mining safety class before you can even set foot underground.
@MegaArchiebald The safety standards are actually as high in the US as they are in any other country, but you have rich greedy businessmen who own these mines who want to cut costs, so they hire uneducated people and they cut back on upkeep with the safety and such. I know coal miners, they say 90% of the mines in the US are up to date with safety, this series just focus's on the worst mine they found, they aren't all like this
@MegaArchiebald It is sad but it's also a drastic improvement from the days when my grandfather and his father worked in the mines. Today's mines in my Pap's words "are a cakewalk". Deaths were routine back then.
@MegaArchiebald In Australia it is a dangerous job underground its just that we put more controls in place and manage the hazards. And yes I do work in the mines in Aus and I'm 4th gen underground miner. Underground injurys happen In Aus all the time.
@MegaArchiebald "It's a shame that American coal mines have such low safety standards" its deep shaft kiddo "and don't educate them very well." huh? its deep shaft kiddo. ""People get hurt and you have to accept that". Not a good statement. " deep shaft kiddo. in australia most coal mines are open cut mining. i have been around australians god i hate you people.
to the fella says its not cold-I'm underground everyday and it is by hell cold! 40,000 cubic feet of air per minute at the face makes for a sweet windchill. I wear thermals, thinsulate in the boots, uniform and two pair coveralls and a carrhart coat! warm on the pinner(roof bolting machine to you nub's) and around the miner, but unless you're shoveling belt you get cold... Oh, and it's colder in the AFTERNOON, b/c of flywheel effect...(figure that out )
@Daniel4KC Temperature depends on air flow quantities. Naturally air does heat up underground, but air flow quantities ensure it stays cold. You should know that when you work in an area of low flow, it does get hot and humid. But some people think that miners are close to the earths core. Little do they know how far away we are from it.
It's not freezing cold. Depending on the depth of the mine, it is on average 55-65* no matter what the weather is like outside.
@870Remington12: Get your 80hr apprentice miner card and give it a try. It's not for everyone, but it's a great job if you don't mind to actually work. In return you will make nearly as much money as a doctor (depending on company & position). I know electricians that make $39/hr and get 20hrs overtime @ almost $60/hr.
My husbands a underground miner and I am so proud of him and so thankful that he makes it out of there everyday to come home to me miners are a special breed that's for sure and the story's he comes home and tells let's me know he loves what he does and wouldn't want to do anything else
I guess I will be the first one to comment....My Dad is a miner and this isn't far from where I live and I can say that I am as proud as anyone can get to be a coal miners daughter......Can't wait to watch the show...

to the fella says its not cold-I'm underground everyday and it is by hell cold!

Crazy thing is all the mines are hiring!!
