Silva's well-rounded but being great on the ground means nothing when you go up against THE greatest. Just look at Penn vs. Florian. Penn is the best at BJJ in the LW division and Florian is one of the best. Obviously that didn't mean much for Florian. Trust me, Maia's on another level than Silva in BJJ.

My point about Florian is that he has world-class BJJ and he's ended half of his pro fights in submission, yet his BJJ isn't on Penn's level. Anderson Silva has great BJJ but if he gets taken to the ground by Maia, he will find out who has the greatest.

Thales Leites isn't as good as Maia at BJJ, has no balls, has no ability to take people to the ground and he doesn't put together gameplans like Maia.
I'm not underestimating Silva's skills, I just think his ground game - which is great - would be exposed by an even better ground expert. No one ever seems address this issue when I bring it up but it's scary how EASILY Maia can pull guard. Forget his excellent throws and excellent wrestling (which Leites doesn't have), he can just pull guard.

mate, facing some1 in bjj is NOTHING like facing them in mma, size and power plays a huge difference when a mix of striking and grappling is involved. I do believe he is the best submission arist in the game 2day, and dont discount him 4 that, but bjj players are notoriously weak on their takedowns in comparison to wrestlers. I think he'll just get worn down by nate and either lose by tko or points... but hes definitely a huge prospect 4 the future if he learns how 2 stike..

I agree that BJJ players are TYPICALLY bad at takedowns but Maia's scary because he does have takedowns and wrestling. He tossed Chael Sonnen, a decorated wrestler, like nothing. He pulled guard against Chael Sonnen no problem. Maia may well be one of the best wrestlers in MMA but because he's known as a BJJ guy, nobody seems to notice. He'll expose Marquardt's ground game in fantastic fashion, then you'll see.

Ed Soares talked some shit on the last episode of inside MMA. He said that they want good all around fighter for Anderson to make a good fight. Thats bullshit, Silva couldnt finish Leites and he is scared to engage against very good grappler. If the fight would go to the ground against Maia, it would be over.

I seriously can't wait for this hype train to crash...Maia is way too one dimentional to even be considered as champ material. Marquard is going to keep him standing and out strike him with ease, he's too strong and athletic for Maia.

meh...I dont think anyone really has a chance. juijitsu is impressive but silvas is unstoppable. we saw him and thales fight and Silva wouldnt go to the ground, if Maia trys to stand with him he will get dropped. Always nice to watch silva fight though.

If he can beat Marquardt his chance to beat Spider raises a lot. He can submit stronger and bigger fighter. On stand up he has no chance with Anderson Spider but if he could take the fight to the ground he have the skill to submit him.

Im sorry Maia has great BJJ but it will take more than that to beat Silva. Im not 100% sure he will get past Marqurdt who is a big strong well rounded middleweight.

Whew! Luckily for Maia, he has great wrestling, throws and ability to pull guard too! (By the way, this is very relevant because he can utilize all of these abilties to drag people into a ground match with him.)
He's never had a problem getting a fight to the ground and I don't see it being a problem against Marquardt or Silva.

I agree that Maia grappling the best but he will need more than that to beat Silva. Marquardt is pretty well rounded himself so this fight will answer all the questions. Because it will see how Maia will react when he gets punched in the face.

Silva's well-rounded but being great on the ground means nothing when you go up against THE greatest. Just look at Penn vs. Florian. Penn is the best at BJJ in the LW division and Florian is one of the best. Obviously that didn't mean much for Florian. Trust me, Maia's on another level than Silva in BJJ.

yea but Florian is no Silva, but Silva is more well rounded than Maia. I give Maia a good chance but I want to see how he would take a punch. His past opponents weren't on Silvas level so his fight with Marquardt will answer all questions.

My point about Florian is that he has world-class BJJ and he's ended half of his pro fights in submission, yet his BJJ isn't on Penn's level. Anderson Silva has great BJJ but if he gets taken to the ground by Maia, he will find out who has the greatest.
As certain as I am that Silva and Marquardt would win standing, I am certain Maia would win on the ground. But I'll just drive the point home one more time for you: Maia knows how to get people on the ground.

its a different situation tho, yes he's much better than anderson on the ground, but silva is still a black belt... and seems fairly comfortable in that position (yes i agree he hasnt been tested tho). Maia on the other hand has absolutely no standup at all, and hes facing a guy whos become known as the best of all time because of his ability to keep it standing.. maia could definitely be a title contender, but lets wait n c how he responds to getting punched in the face by nate b4 we say 2 much

totally agree about anderson silva think he will rape maia on the feet but tbh maia has no need to work hard on jiu-jitsu he can focus on the stand up, just needs to defend, and wait for nate to unload, look for the opening and attack with take downs and punches.

Marquardt is great, but I guarantee Maia will be the heavy odds favorite and will submit Marquardt. But i disagree with you about no standup. Sure he is not like silva, BUT WHO IS? He has a karate and judo background. He is not Machida but he certainly not Noguiera. Noguiera is the guy with no stand up.

I guess we will just have 2 wait n c. nogueira's standup is poor yes, but hes got a hell of a chin which is something maia hasnt had tested yet and will have 2 be good 2 face sum1 like silva cause hes gonna take some hits. This fight with nate will be a huge test of his mettle

ppl said the same about leites and look wat happened there.. seems to me ur underestimating silva's skill, and overestimating maia's. Put it this way, dan henderson, an OLYMPIC WRESTLER had trouble getting silva down, and wasnt able to do any damage when he did. If silva fights maia soon it'll be like the forrest griffin fight all over again

Thales Leites isn't as good as Maia at BJJ, has no balls, has no ability to take people to the ground and he doesn't put together gameplans like Maia.
I'm not underestimating Silva's skills, I just think his ground game - which is great - would be exposed by an even better ground expert. No one ever seems address this issue when I bring it up but it's scary how EASILY Maia can pull guard. Forget his excellent throws and excellent wrestling (which Leites doesn't have), he can just pull guard.

My one probnlem with Maia is that he has a very traditional style of BJJ, albiet a VERY VERY good version of it, but in my opin. it is very predictible. But he can prove me wrong, if he subs Nate the Great I'll be behind him 100%.... maybe 90%

To say that is actually more a credit to him, don't you think? He's not doing a lot of tricky, gimmicky stuff out there. Having some crazy techniques is cool, but what really wins fights, especially at that high of a level? Just doing the basics better than anyone on the planet.

Marquardt is too big? Really? Did you really just say that? Watch the video above. He's beaten Gabriel Gonzaga three times in BJJ and he's WAY bigger than Marquardt. I know that BJJ, but where else will strength be a problem in a fight besides grappling?
Too talented? That's actually funny. Maia may be the best all-around grappler in MMA. And I hate to tell you, Marquardt is primarily a grappler.

mate, facing some1 in bjj is NOTHING like facing them in mma, size and power plays a huge difference when a mix of striking and grappling is involved. I do believe he is the best submission arist in the game 2day, and dont discount him 4 that, but bjj players are notoriously weak on their takedowns in comparison to wrestlers. I think he'll just get worn down by nate and either lose by tko or points... but hes definitely a huge prospect 4 the future if he learns how 2 stike..

I agree that BJJ players are TYPICALLY bad at takedowns but Maia's scary because he does have takedowns and wrestling. He tossed Chael Sonnen, a decorated wrestler, like nothing. He pulled guard against Chael Sonnen no problem. Maia may well be one of the best wrestlers in MMA but because he's known as a BJJ guy, nobody seems to notice. He'll expose Marquardt's ground game in fantastic fashion, then you'll see.

I think it's safe to say that Maia has the best BJJ in the middleweight division, but his striking needs work or he could be in trouble come UFC 102 in his bout against Nate Marquardt. Of course, if the fight ends up on the ground, Nate will likely be submitted.

Ed Soares talked some shit on the last episode of inside MMA. He said that they want good all around fighter for Anderson to make a good fight. Thats bullshit, Silva couldnt finish Leites and he is scared to engage against very good grappler. If the fight would go to the ground against Maia, it would be over.

he won't have to, his takedowns whether it be lower or upper body, throws, and his ability to pull guard is to dominant for anyone hu's jiu jitsu isn't up to where his is, and being how sucky silva is on the ground it will be a short night watching him go to sleep

I've never seen this guy until I saw him two days ago in UFC highlights, just from that I can see his brilliance. This guy's movement is like a snake or invertibrate who has no back bone. The most fluid bjj movement I've ever seen hands down!
