  • The Dutch seem like such a sensible people. So their 17th century craze for tulips seems inexplicable. Lord Clark doesn't even attempt to actually explain it in his "two minute's digression on the subject of tulips." In fact the Dutch are still crazy for tulips I understand.

  • @Dannys998877

We do grow lots of tulips, mainly for export I believe.

  • @Dannys998877 The craze was all to do with money; the mania for these new flowers, tulips, let to a market with constantly rising prices and fantastic sums being paid for promising rare bulbs - just like investing in the stock market. Some investors in tulips made a fortune. But the market later collapsed, and many people lost everything. Just like a classic modern stock market crash.

  • Damn Dutch fat cats with their tulips, always leaving their stunning architecture laying about the streets for the riff-raff to trip on!

  • A most superb and profound episode. My own personal favourite.

  • Yeah, I grew up in Holland, you have horizons too. That's what I remember most.

  • In Holland, we have mountains floating above us.

  • Thanks for posting these, they are a real help in my revision.
