usually i choos the granny smith (tho they can be a bit fierce, as my mum says ;) but now i'm choosing british varieties cos while i like the gs they often come from as far away as south africa/s.america. i'm not to keen on the idea of eating apples flown in from the other side of the planet when there's perfectly good tasty apples right here where i live. and the taste good too :)
@psionicdreams That's a good point. It's good to buy local.
I am working my way though eating all of the apples I bought for this video. I like tart and/or crisp apples. I like Fuji and Gala, but a new favorite is the Empire. The Empire apple that I had was Amazing!!! I would recommend trying that one.
i've read that some apples have so much sugar in them that they can cause tooth decay. personally i find that one apple every couple of days works wonders on the... er... it makes life a lot easier in the... i can't say it.
but apples are a very good source of fibre. (fiber?)
@psionicdreams Yes, the new types of apples can have a lot of sugar in them. They can also have high acidity which can be bad for your teeth too.
And . . . . *coughcough* . . . . I hadn't heard about that before with apples, but it wouldn't surprise me. Fruit can have . . . many health benefits. :)
@psionicdreams I believe it is not the sugar that causes tooth decay...it is the bacteria that come and feed on the sugar that causes the actual decay.
yay! i tell this story (about johnny appleseed really spreading alcohol as opposed to food) all the time. i had heard it second-hand, and i'm glad to finally know what the original source material probably was. thanks!
My in-laws live about 30 minutes from a working apple orchard and we visited there last November. We came home with about 6 varieties of apples - about a bushel worth. Then we had to think of something to DO with all of them. There are loads of great recipes for apples out there, so we were able to keep lots of doctors away!
@realspacemodels My family did something similar once. We ended up making some homemade apple sauce, like I am sure you might have, that was excellent.
i love how you really know what you're talking about. you're not just reading it from a script (at least, it doesn't seem like you are). also, you take things that people don't think about or just take for granted and make them sooo interesting :D thank you :)
Interesting, did you also know that the Hard Cider was used to make another alcoholic beverage by freezing the water from the cider to increase the alcohol amount. This became Apple Jack. I have heard the term in a couple songs and movies. According to wikipedia it was used a currency to pay road construction crews during the colonial period in New Jersey.
@spoonmerlin Lol. No I didn't know that. I watched part of the Ken Burn's documentary on Prohibition though, and that was fascinating. It would sure be something to be payed in alcohol! I wonder if that would make the construction go faster or slower?
Your videos have constantly improved since you started making sometimes peculiar, yet always interesting topics available to all in a pedagogical and fun way! The fluidity of your speech, the post-production adding of pictures related to the subject mentionned, the links to prior videos, the very few and unnoticeable looks at your paper reminders... they all contribute to making this video your best one :) Congrats, loving it !
@FredericDelaunois That is an incredibly nice thing to say! This video probably took me the longest out of all of them to make, so I am glad you liked it. And, yes, I do hope the quality of my videos are slowly improving. The saying, "Practice makes perfect" is very true.
Great channel, I love random trivia, especially with a lovely host such as yourself. Where have you been all my life?!
