I first heard Jimmy Scott on a PBS show. Had never heard of him until then. I own many of his CD's and cherish him as a national treasure. What a soulful voice...
@okayhawaii This is the young, "Little" Jimmy Scott. His voice is a contralto due to Kallman's Syndrome, giving it that unique, powerful and haunting adrogynous quality. But even if you think the sound of the voice isn't like the older Jimmy Scott, how could fail to recognize that unique phrasing? It's rapturous.
We chatted a bit and discovered we both had the same birthday he older than myself.
It is so great to see his career continue after so many bad breaks. He is in a class by himself. The only singer I would compare him too is Billie Holiday. He was her favorite singer.
Thank you for your comments. This version of the song is from the album "The Fabulous Songs of Jimmy Scott" released 1960. I wrote a blog post to accompany this video all about Jimmy and his amazing story and gift. Link is in the video description.
rob068... Thank you for your post. You are so right. That version on The Source was the first song I heard Mr. Scott sing, and I have been in love with his voice and styling ever since. Unfortunately, the LP got away from me somehow, and I had forgotten the title (but not the cover picture of that person with that tremdous Afro). If anyone can, PLEASE post that rendition on Youtube so others can share the experience. I'll look for the CD for Xmas.
Always imitated never duplicated. This Singer's Singer is unique with immeccable phrasing, no one comes close. Probably the most influence singer among singers of all genre's & generations. Everyone took alittle of his style and his songs were sung by everyone from Nancy Wilson to Michael Jackson.
I heard this version, now no other will do...

Jimmy does an even more devastating version of this, in my opinion, on his 1969 album, THE SOURCE. BUY the CD, it'll blow your mind.

My god ... what a voice. Incredible. What voice is more perfectly balanced and controlled and yet seeped in natural expression?
