  • ...I bet you could hear an eyelash drop to the floor during the breaks...

Excellent rendition, the mood just makes it... haunting. Thank you for posting this.

  • Weren't the audience not meant to applaud?

  • @obizin well, this was played on 2001, right after 11th september, so you can easily understand why this reaction occurred.

  • I ONLY WISH I CUD PLAY ANY INSTRUMENT.... SO BEAUTIFULLY, SO TIMED, AND WITH SUCH EASE.....

my tears flow with respect :)

... reflection, joy, sadness, remembrance,..... <3

i love when music moves you more than speech!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • @trabekcdnire why cant you? if you desire it go for it

  • Why did the conductor walk off at the end?

  • @danmj2 Look at his fface near the end. It shows great professionalism to conduct something so emotional on its' own without the attachment to that attrocity and stay compsed through out. I couldn't have done it. I would say he needed a break before his composure broke down entirely.

  • just BEAUTIFUL.

  • very poor sound......good video bad audio......

  • @iliesko That's how VHS records....the sound not that good

  • I watched this on that night and cried so much. It's extraordinary how a piece of music such as this can bring out emotions which you wouldn't expect to necessarily feel: it's not as if I knew anyone affected by the atrocious events of that Tuesday afternoon, and yet, watching and listening to this beautiful and very fitting piece, it was like I was actually grieving for those who lost their lives. Maybe I was, but whatever it was I felt that night, this piece brought it to the surface.

  • This video's sound track needs a low pass filter to get rid of the hiss. Aside from that, very moving :(

  • We nearly lost our way of live on that day. I believe that I will not see the end of this new struggle. It will end one day but how is yet to be seen?

  • this song always tears me to shreds...it never fails to make me cry...

  • Wenn Klasik, dann so. Ziemlich cool !!

  • This made me cry so much :'(

  • @urs4ever86

Wash your mouth out you dirty little bugger, and go back to hip hop where you belong. What a crass remark!

  • @urs4ever86 Hey man, fuck you.

  • ....Barber's adagio will always be with me....the other Masters wrote undescribable music...but none ever touched my heart like this....

    Frank in Miami

  • In memory of all those poor people in the buildings, on those planes and those brave, brave firefighters never to be forgotten x x

  • I CAME SLOWLY!!!!!

  • Beautifully Played....Being a Vietnam Veteran, This song brings me back to the rice paddies with my brothers that I left behind. Makes me cry everytime I hear this piece of music. Most Beautiful Piece of Music I Ever Heard.

  • Omg those high notes put that heavy feeling in my chest like i wanna cry sooooo bad

  • This piece is a fitting tribute to those who perished. They will never be forgotten.

  • Thanks Britain...good to know you have our backs as we always will have yours

  • @mfleming98 dont thak england , thank to the people, yes, People Humans from england chose to present their respect for what happened on 9-11 by singing this beautyful song, but they where not alone, every country every human every one single soul on this cursed earth died a little when hearing about what happened there. so dont thank to annyone because not country's are holding each other back's but people living souls.

  • @mfleming98 and people from england was not the only country that tried to do something good right and beautyful for that horrible day my dad left to war to aid people from usa to eradicate terorism and he died there and i am from romania a country that u didnt even heard of so dont thank england say thanks tot he people stop the idiotic ideea of patriotism it's stupid and makes people kill each other for nothing , i am not finished but i am too depresed to continue and sorry for my bad english

  • @mfleming98

I believe many Americans do have our backs. Not so sure your current government does when it doesn't take our side over the Falklands and encourages Argentina, which has been making noises again over our islands. Bit of a betrayal that considering how many of our soldiers died there. Please make sure your political reps know that they should remember who their real friends are.

  • this is a beautiful piece of music .. nice tribute to the almost 4 THOUSAND people who were killed on 9/11 .. will we also get a tribute to the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of innocent iraqis and afgans who were killed in revenge???????? .. probably not

  • People need to stop coughing in concerts like this.

  • Nice. Although I myself do prefer the Tiesto version. Its less boring. I mean: you really have to be in the mood for this. Though it is beautiful, I cant listen to this for the full 10 minutes. Maybe when I m reading a book or something on a sunday afternoon..

  • @Superpiair1 You, Sir, are an imbecile.

  • Wow....absolutely beautiful

  • 5 people hate america

  • @zakwright1 Make it 6.

  • @zakwright1 That's kinda of an inappropriate on a video like this.

  • And when Mr. Saltkin introduced the work, he asked for a moment of silence before they played it. And he also asked that there'd be no applause after it was finished.

  • We'll never forget..

  • This piece still has the power to make me cry.

  • if this doesn't make you feel something, i don't know what will x

  • @hannahtalksalot its wonderful the situation makes it even more emotional

  • THUMBS UP if you agree this is the greatest piece of classical music written by an american. If not, tell me something that's better.

  • i can respect other peoples opinion when they say it's not but this clearly without a shadow of a doubt this is THE best piece of classical music i have and will ever hear. I have always consider this to be the best piece of music ever written and cannot be bettered. Mr Samuel Barber thank you so much for writing this piece of music. Shaun.

  • if i was to die and you take my place, would you replace me with the same vent of haste the same rented waste that shouts blame and crys surrender, would you lay yourself down on the marbled ember, would you carry my sword, and cleanse my wounds, would you put yourself forward where the vulture swoons, would you do onto me as i do for you and lay down silent for the nourishment of truth...that is what this music does to me

  • the most beautiful piece of music ive ever heard play..such compassion in every note pouring out.. such a heartfelt tribute..

  • Truly emotional,

I heard this piece used to honor the many men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our freedoms and more on 60 minutes for memorial day a couple of years ago, it made me cry, i couldn't speak for a few moments.

  • I remember this concert as if it was yesterday.... the 2010 series of the proms starts soon and its hard to believe it was 9 years ago -almost. I love the music of samuel Barber but the adagio for strings was so appropriate that day, that night and and at that concert...... out went the jingoistic british music and prominence was given to humilty, loss and bereavement which the adagio conveys so well. Slatkin did a great job.

  • It was a very moving, I was there in the arena. It was the first time an American conductor was going to lead the last night of the proms. I was looking forward to the end of the season to see what he did and then came the events of 11th September.

  • seriously ? WTF!!??

  • Umm, where did that information come from? I just don't feel like this piece represents that.

  • Well you're right about the gay part at least... but I don't know how you came up with the rest. Cite your sources.

  • Terribly moving.

  • Profound and brilliant music and, unfortunately an appropriate occasion for this piece to flourish.

  • always makes me cry...using the music for end of my own funeral

  • @vjkells I'm going with "Georgie Girl"

  • Thank you uploader

  • That was incredibly beautiful. I shed a few tears...

  • Thanks for the post. We were also there in the park and the experience was unbelieveable. Seeing the video makes me relive it, for better or worse.

  • has an awsum effect if you play it right e.g. getting the timeing and the sound. however the orchestra that playes this piece every one got lost because the speed was sooooooooooooo slow. not that its a bad thing

  • "the Orchestra got lost"??? You are talking about a world class Orchestra with world class musicians...Please explain to all of us, how they got lost! Maybe we are missing something out?

All I am hearing is pure emotion and the right feeling for a beautiful piece of music!

    Best wishes

    1st Chair Double Bass, LSO

  • sorry, i type it wrong. what i ment was the orchestra that i play at. the frist time we played that piece it made me get lost! and my friends.

Hope you understand my apology, but after 2 week i start to get it! very nice piece.

  • Of course I understand and appreciate your apology.

Don´t worry, everybody gets a typo here and there:)

Good luck with your Orchestra, hope all is going well!

    Best wishes

  • The only time White suit jackets had not been worn at the proms

  • I also felt sorry for the conductor... being American and all. Pause at 00:11 and you can see how devistated and shocked he is over it... Thats why he walks off at the end of the piece - I don't blame the guy

  • Bella interpretación.

  • Amazing.....We were at Hyde Park for PotP in 2001, and i just cannot expalin the atmosphere in the park while this was being played........Such an evocative and momentous piece.

  • very emotional

  • Tiesto? HAH. He did a remix but Samuel Barber is the composer.

  • ...and i forgot to say this is one of my absolute favorites.

  • R.I.P ;(

  • ^^^^^^^^^

Where did you ever see any Brits/Germans or French celebrating the attacks? This sure doesn't look like "clapping and cheering in the streets"

  • I'm pretty sure nateschannel is lying i didn't see it either.

  • NatesChannel. You are genuine idiot. You have no idea what you are talking about. First off 67 brits died on 9/11. Do you think just because it happend in America we are the only ones who can mourn the dead? It was a tragedy for the entire free world not just America.... I saw the attack from across the river does that mean i can mourn and im geussing you weren't a witness up close so you shouldn't be able to mourn?

  • I watched the BBC America tape of the program and it was very moving. He asked for a moment of silence before the work, and, after the work, he asked the audience not to applaud. It was the most moving broadcast I've ever seen, since it was only a few days after 9/11.

  • made me cry

  • Wow--it's a breathtaking piece of music. Let's talk about that, shall we?

  • Comment removed

  • You are all a bunch of tits. Here we have a tribute to people who died due to people hating people and wht do you find to talk about... nothing... just arguments. My old man was killed today... thanks to a real IRA terrorist. I came here to listen to a tribute song, his favourite song. And i see you all arguing. It makes me sick. A curse on all your houses! If we don't stick together as people we're as inhuman as them!

Taxes? Jealous? Who cares when some1 you love is gone!

  • newsflash NakedBison. The majority of rich "hard working" people were either born into a life of wealth or obtained their money in a corrupt mannor. They didn't work hard at all.

  • George u bitch why don't u say that to a 911 victim

and plus did u every hear about the American dream

no other country is more free they us

where every u are from, most likely England cause u used the word ''rubbish'' u British fag

this message is not to RupertJones its to georgexxx83

  • @usmc957 - George is indeed an idiot, and only recently I criticised a friend of mine for mocking said attacks - but you sir are, frankly, just as stupid as he.

If you honestly believe that America has more freedoms than any other nation you've obviously never researched the rest of the world - and your belie your arrogant, bigoted nature with your "British fag" remark. I'll remind you it's British soldiers who are fighting & *dying* beside American soldiers to protect those very "US" freedoms.

  • @MrDavidHarrison Ummm first off so far in 2010 there has been 312 American soldier deaths and only 82 british soldier deaths and yes America is more free than any country (Democracy GOV.), because for every law for every rule for every congress member, there is a vote for every person that wants them in office or wants a law made. Plus you yourself is a little bitch for trying to come in here and use big fancy words to make it look like your smart, but in real life your a big douchebag to every1

  • @usmc957 - Firstly, do you think that unless we have an equal number of casualties our contribution is irrelevant?

Secondly, as we have a population a 5th the size of the US (& a military an 8th the size) we’ve actually lost a larger percentage of our citizens (& far larger of troops) to this war than the US.

Do you think American lives are worth more than those of people from other nations?

Also, we have democratic government here too, you know...

  • @usmc957 - ...and, while our elections may be every six years instead of four, we actually have greater power over our elected officials while they’re in office than you do.

Here in the UK our MPs (Members of Parliament, equivalent to your ‘Representatives’) can put forward a “Vote of No Confidence” & depose the PM quite easily. In the US your president is essentially an elected king with a fixed reign of 4 to 8 years who can only be removed by impeachment if he does something actually illegal.

  • @usmc957 - Finally, I checked my OP & the biggest words I used were ‘criticised’ & ‘researched’ - neither of which I think could be considered particularly “fancy”. If you think my post has “fancy” language I obviously *am* smarter than *you*!

  • @MrDavidHarrison Actually i was talking about "belie your arrogant, bigoted' no one says that, and plus when a president is elected anything he does is watched over by everyone in the nation. If we wanted to we could be out of the war right now if we had a vote and there was more votes to get out and yes i do care for American soldiers more than british. i dont care that much for the war i believe that we should withdraw soldiers and strengthen our borders with the $13 billionaday we are wasting

  • george go to hell

  • Comment removed

  • You stupid idiot!

  • No by all means hate whoever you like, but don't just base that on the last decade of the Bush administration, or indeed other dark spots in Americas history! Look back at all the good in the world they have done, all the people and nations they help, including ours! And also don't forget that we are the mother land, many parts of America were owned by the British during the Empire, most, if not all, of their customes, traditions and Government we what we gave them, now do hate Britian as well?

  • President Bush was America's greatest President since the late, great President Reagan

  • While i think, and i'm one of the few that do, that President Bush was a great leader for your country and choose many a difficult disition in the years after 9/11 i feel that it would be wrong to lable him the greatest since Reagan, as Bush Snr and Clinton had mush more domestic input for your country that is of great benifit. Bush spent to much time with world issues. Not that that's wrong. And now with Obama his got to try to balance the domestic and internatonal stage.

  • If it is true that President Bush spent more time on foreign affairs than on domestic issues, it is because that is what was necessary and expected from our leaders. Our leaders are chosen primarily to protect us from physical harm, which President Bush did quite well in the aftermath of 9/11. Domestically, he cut taxes three times, resulting in the strongest economy in world history. Only when the Dummycrats took over, did America's economy fall

  • I agree with you that he did quite well from protecting your nation from from physical harm after 9/11 and that domestically he perfrom well, if not better than other resent Presidents. But needless to say to aftermath of the two wars could have gone better, being British myself it could have gone better for us to. But it's not primarily for would leaders to protect us from harm, its just one the mandates that goes with the office and position, but it's very hard to police and predict! continued

  • continued... You mention that Bush cut taxes three time, resulting in the strongest economy in world history. And this is true but it is also undoutedley a key reason for why the world economy is in the situation its in now, not just because of your country but mine to and others. Lets not forget either that this situation has been around now for the best part of 18months, coming towards the end of Bush's Presidency, either way you look at it Obama is now the one we must have hope in!

  • Ironeyes07 is right, although alot of time people may not be born into a life of wealth they, for most part don't even work that hard for it. Normally employing others to do it on their behalf, but thats a luxary they can afford to do! Real hard working people tend to get the minimum, or even below odds and most of time its the rich that takes from the comfortable, the people who get by, or the poor to get richer, just look at the world now. While the rest of us stay in the same position!

  • wiliam orbit's version was pretty good. how tiesto managed to destroy this i don't know.

  • Loss of life is and will always be a thing to never forget, universal in every single way, this piece of music fits perfectly with the thought.

Wether it was a government operation or a terrorist act, these kind of things are what shakes the roots of mankind to realize what we are doing.

Don't you dare bring religion or any other stereotype factor into this scene, just rid yourself of the drama, realize that you're human, continue with life.

  • TIESTO RUINED THE SONG!

  • georgeXXX is rubbish anyway

  • tiesto suck my dick

  • nope, big no, different yes but not better. tiesto's music is bound by tempo numbers however classical music has no tempo bounds simply because the maestro rearranges it to make the melody more dramatic or happy or whatever.

  • I think it is fairly appropriate to say that music transcends all nations, races, religions, genders and sexual preferences. Samuel Barbers Adagio for Strings is an incredibly beautiful peace of music, which allows us to reflect on the victims of any number of conflicts. Politics really bares no reference to this peace of music, and anyone should be able to listen to it and relate it to any people or event to which they feel it applies.

  • This piece always makes me very reflective when played for Remembrance Day. Its absolutely beautiful. A perfect tribute for this tragedy.

(Christ YogaNate79! How did you survive to maturity on that one racist, zenophobic, discriminating, self-absorbed, fanatical, violent brain cell?

I can't see one post where you say anything that is sensible, accurate or sensitive to the other people around you.

Its people like you that keep the world fighting and killing and destroying itself.)

  • I'd like to talk about the song if I may seeming that this has been infected by political bitchslapping across the board rather than talking about the SONG!

I think the piece is fitting and highly emotional towards the subject at hand and you could see even the composer was feeling the auld lump in the throat in the latter stages and I also felt that.

    It is emotion personified.

  • It is not emotion personified...emotion personified would be if a person came across as pure emotion. Music cannot be anything 'personified' as it is not a PERSON. :)

But yes, I agree completely with the rest, and the idea you meant to communicate with the last sentence.

    *hates being so pedantic*

  • the trouble is when the usa bombs other people they bomb you back. America hurt in 911, but its nothing compared to what is happpening now in the muslim world, From iraq, afganistan and now pakistan the US/UK are bombing and kill muslims, ameirca quite right was angry at 911 but muslims were angry becaue of what you did. To take revenget begat revenge. All human life is speical, no one is superior to each other. If my daughter was killed i sure do not want another child kill in revengee for her.

  • But many people do not realize that the terrorists were welcomed here as immigrants. They studied and lived here for years, but eventually betrayed us.

9/11 is the day when America stopped trusting the rest of world.

  • The BBC Symphony Orchestra is a class act for performing this piece so beautifully and in honor of the 9/11 victims.

People died, families are still grieving. Hard times have come. We need to band together instead of squabbling over petty differences and half-remembered history.

  • Perfect for 911 this wonderFULL piece!

The violin playing so emphatically and with forgiveness...

    Peace to all beings

  • One thing people forget about 9/11 it wasn't just Americans that died that day, but more than 70 British Subjects also died in the Twin Towers. The attacks were not just on America, but on the whole Civilised world.

  • They forget because the truth is too monstrous to comprehend.

The idea that all the progress of centuries - technology, philosophy, education, culture, music, literature, art, industry - do not garantee our freedom from base savagry.

The blackened claws of primitive barbarism is reached out of the night to drag us back into the Dark Ages.

We either fight now or we submit to slavery later.

People would rather pretend it is in the past and move on.

But we cannot move until the war is won.

  • My aunt died that day, she is american, but it was an attack on over 170 countries really!

  • The end is nigh!

  • oh and here is your 9/11

Open Microsoft Word and do the following:

    1. Type in capitals Q33 NY. This is the flight number of the first plane to hit one of the Twin Towers. 2. Highlight the Q33 NY. 3. Change the font size to 48. 4. Change the actual font to the WINGDINGS

  • I just done that and was bit shocked like. neva knew that was the pics.

    weird huh.

  • Pity that the flight number of the first plane to hit the twin towers was American Airlines flight '11', otherwise your post would be interesting.

  • Yes this wingdings thing is well known spam.

  • Hey Marty, welcome to seven years ago! That glowy screen in front of you is called a comp-ut-er.

  • LOOK,

barber was at a serious low point of his life probably after cathing his misses in bed with the next door neighbour.

Who cares what this piece of music means to 9/11

it was wrote and composed way BEFORE 9/11 happened

    TWATS

  • Given that Samuel Barber died in 1981 I think most people here realise this piece wasn't composed to commemorate 9/11.

  • A wonderful and truly moving piece of music which sums up perfectly the despair evident in the faces shown of the victims of 9/11.

Superimpose on the above all the faces of the countless victims of worldwide tragedies (both natural and man made) and it's hard to imagine how man can be be so cruel yet so compassionate, so creative and artistic yet so destructive!

Sadly, the irony evident in the beautiful music and terrible suffering depicted just about sums up the human race.

  • i beg to differ. people from 83 different countries were killed on 9/11. as far as im concerned the attack happened on u.s. soil but the entire world was attacked that day

  • Well said !

  • One of the most beautiful peices of music ever written I feel.
