  • @georgemickle You missed a detail: "Dominique, nique, nique" means "Dominique, fuck, fuck". Silly, I know, but that's what a Frenchman hears.

  • The Cathars were supported by their Catholic neighbours and nobles in that crusade. When Bezier was taken, a bishop was asked: How can we tell who is Cathar and who is Catholic? The bishop replied: Kill them all. God will recognize his.(a very Christian attitude in a religion which said: Thou shalt not kill.) I can't remember whch bishop said such a thing.

  • The Cathars lived in the south west of France mainly. I don't know if they were the "saints" who often are described or if they would have been as intolerant and ferocious as the Catholic inquisition if they had had the majority of the souls and bodies. But there was a great rivalry between the north and the south south of France due to history, languages and politics in those days. When the "crusaders" (because it was a crusade) conquered the south of France, it became part of the kingdom.

  • Does not matter. I think the world loved her. French or English. She was an inspirisation to personal faith

  • Truly homage to Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a real man of the people, non?

  • I Love this song i always used to hear it on the radio when i was a kid.

  • Where can I learn more about St. Dominic, his fight against heretics, his preaching brothers, bread made of gold, and giant cloaks belonging to the virgin?

  • STRAUSS KAHN NIQUE A RIKERS ISLAND! xD

  • What ''nique'' means?????????????

  • @dorto99 nique = fuck...

  • Comment removed

  • @dorto99 You say bullshit ... Nique only = Fuck, exactly, but here, it the end of the name "Dominique" ...

  • @dorto99 It means what dsk has done last week

  • @dorto99

"nique" is the end of the name Dominique but it also mean "fuck" in French. You can understand why the French speakers smile when they hear that song.

  • That song was written by a real nun, "Sœur sourire" "Smiling nun" she did sevral song in the 1960. She did this song about good god about traveling of "frère Dominique"

But she did this very "naïve" musical rhyme "Dominique nique nique". She did not know that in popular langage "nique" sound like "nic", (meaning fuck in english..; got it ?).

It was already funny at this times to ear "Sœur sourire" singing that, But now with the Dominique StraussKkhan affair... Ouch!

  • M-M-M-M-M-MONSTER KILL

  • @Sam45476 It's not Spanish it's French.

  • I cant speak the language, but I like it.

  • Delightful!!

  • I remember this song from so long ago. my parents had the album. Always thought it was spanish., Love the song and thanks for the translation...

  • Elle ne parle que du bon Dieu aussi.

  • Czech song.. :)

  • a happy song - for happy girls^^

  • What a lovely ballad dedicated to the man who started the Inquisition. Yes, that's right. He and his followers hounded the Albigensians, torturing and murdering them. Although they were a weird Christian sect (so is regular Catholicsm), they were non-violent to a fault and would not even eat animal meat, being vegans. That's how gentle they were.

Thanks "Saint" Dominic, for beginning the pogrom that would become the Inquisition.

And to this monster, they sing songs.

  • @Cissy2cute what do you in your response "monsters"? who are they the Albigensis?

  • @Sam45476 - Albigensians or Cathars believed in two gods-one god (spiritual) and one evil (material world). They rejected the world and thought that the Pope and Catholic priests were evil and loved power. Also, they believed in re-incarnation and read the bible in French, not Latin. Women were equal to men and could be ordained. they did not eat meat and believed that all religions should live in peace together. They harmed no one, Dominic helped to form what later became the Inquisition.

  • Excellent! Brings back good memories of Christmas, 1963.

  • thats suck religion is garbage!

  • danke für dieses video. meine oma hat das immer gesungen. wird ganz warm ums herz, smile

  • My French is not great but using an on-line French dictionary, I'm trying to translate the chorus of the song. This is what I have:

"Dominque-nique-nique, he will go all simply, poor roads and singing. On all highways, in all places, he speaks only about the good God."

That doesn't make much sense. I've seen other translations but they rhyme in English so they're not true to the original. Thanks to anyone who can better translate.

  • @303Gregg I have set the english version in my discription so enjoy ;)

  • @acidgoddess You didn't translate "nique". Sorry... :)

  • @303Gregg Dominque is about the Priest who founded the Dominican Order and the part you’re refering to translates to: Dominique was a simple poor traveller who sang on roads and in places and spoke only about the Good Lord.

  • @303Gregg In reply to what Greg wrote:

    "Dominique, nique, nique

    Goes along very simply

    Traveling in poverty and singing.

On every road, in every place,

He just talks about the Lord,

He just talks about the Lord. "

    Hope that helps

  • @303Gregg How I love Truly Good Traditional Catholic Sisters!!! They are a blessing to my heart and spirit!

  • @303Gregg here u got the English version

    /watch?v=FuNc6YHOt5o&feature=related

  • @303Gregg Another possible translation:

Dominique nique nique simply took off

Destined to take the path, poor and singing

On all the roads, in all the places

He speaks only of the Good Lord.

  • I tried to vote for you, but you rub won't let me since I won't give them my underwear size, and all the other info they ask for.

  • hate myself for liking such a christian song lol

  • drôle...mais trop vieille

  • Very nicely done. Sounds better now than through a crappy AM radio speaker. Nice font also. Fits the song in a way I can't quite describe.

  • Billboard's #141 hit of the rock era. RIP, Jeanine Deckers. God bless you!

  • L'Église catholique vaut moins que la merde pour avoir pris tout son argent et pour l'avoir laissée à se débrouiller quand elle avait besoin de son Église.

The Catholic Church is worth less than shit for having taken all of her money and having left her to deal with her own problems when she needed her Church.

    Greedy institution!!

  • addictive..

  • @noa197 lol agreed

  • Yay finally i can see the lyrics

  • dominique is MY NAME YEAH REALLY P.S WHY ME .WHY ME, WHY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @dominiquelouangrath ha ha ha ha ha - it's a beautiful song and a beautiful name. It's about a medieval religious-obsessive, named St Dominic in English. The Dominican order is still around. Great way to learn French, I agree with Gr2baCDN. The original singer met a tragic end but her miraculous voice lives on. A couple more classics for French students - Charles Trenet doing 'La Mer' and Maurice Chevalier's version of 'Valentine' - oh, and everything by Jacques Brel.

  • @dominiquelouangrath Lol funny

  • I'm teaching my French students this song!! It's and oldie but sure a goodie!! Vive la musique francaise!!

  • omgz i remeber this song btw my names dominique my library teacher use too sing this too mee it was weird 0.o anyways my names dominique lol

  • Can anyone here PLEASE Translate this beautiful song to English for me? Thanks..... Bill

  • Unfortunately, it's not very interesting in English. It tells the tale of St. Dominic converting (i.e., burning) the Albigensian heretics in southern France. The refrain translates to "Dominic went his way simply, wandering, poor and singing, on every road and in every place he only spoke of the Good Lord. In the time when John Lackland was king of England, our Father Dominic fought the Albigensians." He then goes on to found the Dominican order, who were the driving force of the Inquisition.

  • @joysword Actually, the English translation of this song is EXTREMLY interesting to me. I've listened to this tune since about 1968 on the original 45. There was a great post on YT with both the French lyrics and the English translation, it's been removed. I can only find the translation of the first verse now. There are about 6 or 7 verses to the song and u only describe part of 2. The translation I seen made no mention of burning anyone.

  • The school in which I work has some stupid ideas. They've decided to start singing this in assembly. No problem with that except we don't give the kids any words to look at, they just have to learn them. They struggle with short hymns in English, how are they going to learn this!

  • I sing this at school. I think im addicted. o.o

  • This is quite possibly my earliest musical memory. Even before I could talk I loved this song.

  • Un elogio en castellano desde Argentina para este video y su buena musica. Roberto

  • Un elogio en castellano es lo que le faltaba a este video, ahora se lo envio desde Argentina. Roberto

  • As a child in abusive foster care in 1964, this was my only link to hope. To this day I cannot help but be moved to tears when I hear it. Truly the voice of angels

  • @marquetterocks1 PTL, the voices of angles. I am glad it helped you get through your situation. Where was Social Services?

  • hey my name is Dominique!

  • alguem poderia postar a tradução em portugues dessa canção, eu não encontro em lugar algum!

  • Thank you acidgoddess for finally letting me read the lycrics. I wish I could have had this opportunity when I was 14 in 1963. This is the first time sinde then I really understand what she sings. Made me very sentimental.

  • We used to have the Singing Nun's album when I was a child. I just read that Jeannine Deckers (Luc-Gabrielle) and her partner had committed suicide together, losing all courage. I made assumptions that she had a strong faith in God, but she didn't see anyway out other than suicide. They must of had some other options at that time. I don't know. :-(

  • skins.... does that means dominique shags?

  • @crazygirlka HAha, yeah but dun tell Soeur Sourire !

  • I love this song!!

It brings back so many memories for me-when I was 3!

  • She gave nothing to the state or church, it was the vatican who stole her money and still is doing so. She was an abomonation in the eyes of the church. Being a lesbian, but when they need your money they don't care if you are gay or not. I don't like twofaced people but then again i guess no one does. Why botter

  • Wow!Encroyable!

  • I've always loved this song!

  • Thanks for uploading this - now I can sing along karaoke style! I love it! It is such a joyous song. God bless Soeur Sourire wherever she may be.

  • Dw it is a christian song i do love it. The only things is that is sad, that is that Katholic church stole all her money and that she and her gf so no outway.

    Vive la Belgique

  • She's has given all her money away to the church. When she was back a free woman, our state sain against her that she must pay taxes for her music.... so she got broke.

  • acidgoddess @ J'ignorais Que la hierarchie catholique etait la cause de sa Perte .
