Goddam now all we have have is Kate Perry, Justin Bieber etc. Drives me nuts when my daughter plays that crap. This is the real stuff!! Hard to pick a favourite band song but man o' man do these guys rock this out.
Robbie is such a stereotypical guitar whaler, inasmuch the Band is such a archetypal rock n roll group - a sort of paradigmatic band to which all musical artists strive.
That's rock and fucking roll at it's finest. Loose, dirty, raunchy and swingin'. Canada's biggest contribution to music IMO. Topping it off with a great American drummer and singer of course. What a talent those 5 guys were. RIP Richard and Rick.
I am bluesdawg1, and I didn't make this comment. Has YouTube somehow allowed two of us to have the same tag? My account shows more than 1700 views, which seems more time than I think I have wasted on YouTube.
And just to stay on topic, this is pretty good Band stuff. But having come of age playin' rockabilly in North Mississippi, these guys are drag-assin' compared to Little Richard, who forever will reign supreme with Elvis and Chuck Berry for early rock'n'roll. :=)
If it wasn't for all the stuff about him robbing writing credits you wouldn't be saying that. He's canny laim now but back in the day he was cool as fuck. Great stage presence. When he wasn't singing that is
Yeah he is really good, my dad plays on the same track as him. Nothing for the band, they just both performed my dads friends song on a cd my dads friend made.
Rick can't get any cuter. Levon can't get any cooler. Robbie's guitar solo is frenzied and fabulous. Rick's slippin' and slidin' up and down the bass. Garth--incredible. Richard in excellent form. God I love them!!!
The Band had never released a version of this song (typically their encore song), and the bootleg versions were highly coveted in the 70s. There's a nice version in the movie "Festival Express." Guitar's better on this one, though....brilliant.
i wish bands today had this much raw energy and love for the music as the band. you can tell there digging every minute of it. levon's the most underated drummer.
Agree 100% about Levon Helm. I think Little Feat had some of the same loose energy; there must be bands in the same style today, just not so well known.
This is pure rock and roll... Garth and Robbie solos are amazing and the energy is amazing... Nowadays few teenagers know how to like this kind of music (I'm 17)
Three great lead vocalists and the other two tooks the soloes. With The Band there was no front man, so everyone was equally the star. A unique concept that unfortunately faded away when the Band ceased to be.
No "front man" for many years, but when Robbie Robertson took that role they didn't last much longer...I was at the last waltz, which was great, but lots of Robbie, Robbie, Robbie.
Yeah theres alot of guitar fills that don't need to be in there, the shape i'm in has about 4-5 too many fills and kills the point of his subtle playing.
dude, first of all im jealous you followed phish around, second of all why dont u like them anymore? like the band there a bunch of great musicians playing together, and ur trey comment?
phish were great. their musicianship went south as they got the real fame... course, they totally earned that. i remember when billy breathes came out. I was like, wtf, everything's in key or G or C and I can play along with every track. That's not supposed to happen??
i agree that they began to go south naturally, however part of that was them trying new things like every musician should, even if all of it doesn't turn out great, now that they are practicing once again maybe they can bring back that pre-hiatus spark

Garth's organ break is analogous to a funeral service being interrupted by a circus clown on acid.
pekoe67 2 years ago 42
@pekoe67 He started out getting his chops together at his uncle's funeral parlor. On acid or not, he is a trippy guy anyway.
