I just don't understand why she looks so awful (not trying to be rude) here but in the 90's she looks much healthier and better. The 80's made a mess of her (I think) in the appearance department. It seems like she had hideous hairdos and her outfits just don't look "right." Anyway, she still nails some of those oldies hits, RIP Dusty, you are missed.
hey thanks for posting this. This 7 minute video is worth hours of comedic entertainment! Even she can't believe she made it on stage without slipping in her own vomit 5:43. I love this lady. You can tell she has a sense of humor.

I think her voice had become lower and a little thinner sounding by the 80s and 90s which I think is apparent on the reputation album which is quite natural as this happens to most women as they get older although I don't think her smoking helped matters either. Don't get me wrong this isn't a criticism - I'm a major Dusty fan. Cameo was her vocal peak in my opinion.

Damn, she looks like a butch prison warden here. spiked hair and shoulder pads do her no favors! Her appearance a couple years later in the video for "something In your Eyes" was MILES better.
Ok, this is not Dusty's finest live vocal moment, but it's not the trainwreck some people here seem to think. She had trouble at times, but at others (like "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten"), she sounds like the old Dusty. I'm glad by the time PSB brought her back, she had pulled herself together, and her career had a rewarding, successful final act.
my only gripe from is that outfit- like a cross between a Solid Gold dancer and Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome. But hey, it was the 80's...

Dusty is weird looking. She looks like a male crossdresser. The gay community in Canada became angry with her when she announced at a Neil Diamond concert that gays are too straight for her. I think she was joking, but the gay backlash, caused her to limit her concerts to Scotland Scotland at the time was having their own gay issues. Many Scots felt she was a supporter of Al Hammel a Canadian who married Susan Sommers. Al claimed that Canadians were retarded which upset, many.
This isn't a good video if you want to see Dusty the singer-her voice gives out a few times, her phrasing is off occasionally and she makes some questionable aesthetic choices on Preacher Man-but it's a great video for Dusty the performer because she can win you over anyway.
I have to say, though, despite not being at her best vocally, she nails "Look of Love."
At the time this was made she was heavy into drugs and mental problems due to her not being able to fully come to terms with being a lesbian. She was in a violent relationship with a woman in California in the 1980's. But Dusty overcame all and had a smashing come back in the late 80's with the Pet Shop Boys. Dusty, we love you and may you rest in peace.
I love her she is such a babe at any age! Her voice is smokin' hot. I feel like we were cheated somehow since she was performing in England! Why not more here in the states?
I am charmed by the uniqueness of Helen Shapiro's contralto and you could be correct in some ways but "power" isn't necessarily the most crucial factor in pop music. One could say Dusty's ability to convey mood and emotion in her vocals outweighs the importance of "power".
I had the great pleasure of getting to know Dusty during the early '80's. She could be difficult due to her demons at the time, but it was one of the highlights of my life. I will always remember her as Mary O'Brien as well as Dusty. A very, very special woman, indeed. I believe she found some peace before her death and I am so glad of that. RIP, Mary.
I'm glad you got to know her and that she apparently had a terrific sense of humor about herself. A voice as hypnotic and other-worldly as she possessed, she. at least, recognized what WE saw in her, unlike a self destructive soul as Michael you-know-who. She must have been a smasher as they say in the UK.
Haha that was great!!! i think this was the period when she contracted larynigitis... although so, she could still deliver!!! Perfect, just perfect!!! RIP dusty!!!
High? Cold! Pleeeze! She sang on key didn't miss a note perfection of an artist! Unreheressed 9sp) and awesome. I loved this lady and still do! Sing it Dusty! RIP, we in the USA loved you and your music! We lost a true diva!
Considering Dusty made classics in 78, 79 & 82 with no industry support, by 85 before the Pet Shop Boys put her back on top where she belonged, Dusty must have been frustrated & rightfully so...still magical, Dusty is a legend and this is a treat!
In the late 70s or 80s I saw a show with Leslie Gore where she wore more or less the same pant suit as Dusty... that's when I really did realize (to my delight) that these (my idols) were gay. Of course, years and years later, we know. Power to these ladies.
sounds like she might have been trying to sing through a cold or sinus congestion. it's hard to hit those dulcet tones with that going on. She was the greatest!!!
I have heard that Dusty often suffered from laryngitis and other vocal challenges. As a sinusitis sufferer, I can very much appreciate this! Kudos to her for pushing against circumstances and still putting on a show.

There's clearly a decline in Dusty's voice that becomes apparent from around 1980. Its interesting that the same thing happens to Aretha Franklin around that time - Dionne Warwick's lasts a little longer but all three ladies suffer because of the cigarettes.
Its noticeable that those who have retained their voices - Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Diana Ross - were not smokers. It really does make a difference.

I totally agree. It's probably not just the cigarettes. But also the drugs, the alcohol, and the ongoing vocal abuse. (And I'm not 100% convinced that she's completely sober in this performance...). She actually sounds better 2 years LATER in 1987, when she reinvigorated her career with the hits that were written for her by the Pet Shop Boys.
But it's refreshing to hear your honesty about the "elephant in the room" at this point in her career.
I see you get negative results from what you say ! But you are right....also, nerves can step in...and that makes breathing difficult. Dusty is gasping for air at times !
What a great lady though, there will never be another Dusty.
Thanks for your sanity! It's sad that her true fans cannot see her for the beautiful, yet flawed, human being that she was. Ever the performer, it took guts, and a need for cash to go out and try to "laugh and giggle" her way through lots of these songs. I love her, always will, but I love the woman, not the myth.
Incredible, thanks so much for posting. Am guessing from the hair and outfit that this is 1987 at the time of the comeback?
Her voice is much stronger than on her recordings of that time, I wonder if this was because of the method of recording she'd adopted by then? I've heard Neil Tennant say that by then her tracks were recorded a sylable at a time!
Will check my files - but I think it was a couple of years prior to the comeback with the Pet Shop Boys. "The London Palladium" Show had just been resurrected and highlighted stars such as Dusty, Petula and Dionne.
