American Idiot DID come out in 2004. And the reason Green Day are bigger than Sum 41 is because Green Day's major label debut came out in 1994 (Dookie) which was the year Kurt Cobain died and effectively, Nirvana died. New wave Punk rock came out and took over, the pioneers being Green Day and The Offspring with their album 'Smash'. Sum 41 became well-known in 2001 into a genre that you now have to work hard in to bring anything new to, which they haven't.

By the way, I love both bands so I'm saying this from a neutral perspective, but it is also clear that neither band has sold out. Selling out is when you do stuff the label tell you to. But as far as I'm aware, American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown were both written by Billie Joe because he wanted to write them and make a point through a narrative. And making the AI musical was something they've always wanted to do.

Sorry about the long comments haha. But yeah, I love U.Hero and SBM, but they aren't as well written as Chuck and that's because Dave Baksh brought a lot of the musicality to Sum 41. There are so many good ideas in SBM that you can tell haven't been pushed to the limit and it seems partially, lazy song writing for a band that should be releasing pure gold, as GD have done. However, Green Day hit a decline at one point, so maybe the Sums best stuff is yet to come :)
