Roger definitely uses finger picks (With plectrum) now; I'm not sure about then.
I THINK he did what I do, and that's grow out the nails on your two picking fingers just long enough, so when plucked, the strings are first attacked by a caloused finger, follwed by the strike of the nail.
You get better tone than you would think, especially with the Janglebox. Takes ALOT of years and practise! :-)
I use the same technique for Banjo, and sometimes on the Sitar as well.:-)
Far-out post, mcd220! Even though it's mimed, everybody is going ahead and "playing", so it's good to watch for "technical performance details", even though nobody was plugged-in. Say, you might know this, being a Byrds specialist --- did McGuinn use finger-picks? I can see him holding a conventional plectrum in the solo, but I *thought* I also saw, maybe, finger-picks on his ring and pinky fingers. ???? Anybody?
what a group, what music!

Awesome post brother! Yeah, Roger used his nails to fingerpick until the early 70's. That's what he told me anyway.

Cool David; you got to ask Roger about that? Good deal. That's what I always assumed.
It's "Nails" for me; I could NEVER get the hang of picks over the fingers. :-)
