I always thought mst3k would be maybe the only one tv show that has enough material to support its own network. Well-I suppose "law and order" does too, but I hate "law and order"-mst3k episodes are so long and you could put on rifftrax and cinematic titanic material too-as well as the film crew and mike's solo commentarys-that's enough material to last without repeats for a while.

-plus the Brians could make original stuff just for the network.

Because the actor playing Dr Forrester wanted to leave the show. He was also the voice of the original Crow. Bear in mind that by this point the show had already been running for SEVEN YEARS, and Dr F had already done 6 series' of the show.

It wasn't a case of 'fixing something that wasn't broke', the actor just wanted to move on so they had to come up with a new gimmick to guide the show in the form of Dr Forrester's mom. Don't worry, you'll grow to love em ;)
