  • Old human controlled outdated floppydrives: 1

Overcomplicated cinical murderous artificial intelligence: 0

    Come at me GladOs!

  • Oddly enough these are powered by a potato

  • perfect!

  • Muhehehehehe... Niceeeeeee.... Hmm, but if some Floppy instrument dead, then its hard find the new xD In this time :)

  • Did Wheatley dislike this?

  • try using 9" floppys

  • This is how GLaDOS is doing it.

  • O.o This is EPIC !.

  • bottom, third from left is making a clicking sound

  • @ultraprettyandpink It's just your imagination. =P

  • @Sammy1Am Actually, I think it is

  • @Sammy1Am I hear it too and it does seem to be in time with that floppy.

  • @MrDarthT @shakemyass9878 He he, yeah, I know. I wasn't sure what my response was supposed to be... last time someone pointed it out I acknowledged it, I figured I'd try just denying it to see what happened.

    Curiosity satisfied. =D

  • i give you your ultimate challenge: through the fire and flames

  • @oletubeify Here's a real doozy: Circus Gallop

  • @oletubeify i would love to see that

  • OMG GLaDOS is hacking into your tech

  • @sammy1am you should do Wizards in Winter by Trans Siberean Orchestra, or Night Enchanted also by them. pllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeaaaaasssseeeeeeeee! lol

  • I LOVE PORTAL 2 IT SAVED MY JOB.. THANK U

  • @dummydi132 Saved your job? How?

  • Comment removed

  • 2nd floppy drive on the top left, happy face! ^o^

  • its beautiful

  • KILL IT WITH FIRE!

  • @itzWiLLiaM, You monster!

  • så fucking cool

  • @MrPlankan95 magnus dom har inte å i Amerika -.-

  • best video on youtube

  • one person has poor depth perception and missed the like button

  • Cool.

  • How would 5.25" floppy drives sound?

  • @MrSparkle404 A little deeper perhaps? Might play lower notes louder? Someday perhaps I'll find out for sure. =P

  • @Sammy1Am You should also try 8" drives. Mind you, those may belong in museums.

  • 0:01

  • ok this is epic how do you do this i can tell its not edited

  • @machinimaster1088 Yup, no edits just straight from the webcam to video to YouTube (mostly because I'm lazy, lol). The short answer is: an Arduino and Java. The long answer is available in a video tutorial (link in the doobly-doo).

  • im subbing to you this is epic

  • Very awesome still but listening to it again the floppies sound an octave too low

  • @Nelsonngyn0 They probably are =P. The floppy drives only really respond well to notes in the C1 to B4 range, and even within that range notes in the 2nd and bottom of the 3rd octave are much much louder than higher notes. In many cases I've had to lower songs so that the melody can be heard, or (in some cases) the song can be played at all.

Strangely not many people are composing for floppy drives these days, so I have to make do. ;)

  • @Sammy1Am Could you increase the volume in the higher registers by doubling the drives that play those pitches?

  • @dimmddr1 I can do that, and depending on the song I do. Sometimes though I don't want to give up an extra note just to make the melody louder. I've had a lot more success with just placing the microphones nearer to the melody drives (especially in She Has a Girlfriend Now, and In the Hall of the Mountain King)

  • @Sammy1Am It would be a good idea just to balance the sound. Floppy drives are uncommon (nor inexpensive).

  • @dimmddr1 Actually, now that you mention it, it might make sense to make a couple of the drives double-drives (just stack two floppies on top of each other). There'd still be 8 channels, but some could be louder... Hmm... thanks!

  • @Sammy1Am No problem. This is the sort of thing I'd like to do as well. Just as something to expect, how much did you pay for your hardware? Did you salvage/steal any drives?

  • @dimmddr1 The only thing I had to buy was the Arduino (technically I got it as a gift), the wiring and PSUs were just laying around from previous stuff. The drives were actually given to me by a friend who was salvaging a bunch of Dells to make a computing cluster and didn't need the drives. I imagine you should be able to find an old PC somewhere that isn't using its floppy drive.

The audio recording equipment I paid a bit more for, but that comes down to what you're doing with the setup.

  • @Sammy1Am Thanks.

  • (In the future)

Sammy1Am has gotten a job at Aperture Science, studying theoretical hardware music theory. Current progress shows turret units in the facility have started learning opera music... for science!

  • Insert Slow Clap meme.

  • HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THIS???

  • @digisoul4 Alchemy and a little bit of magic.

  • And thus, the floppy drive will continue to live!

  • Can you do some zelda songs? any this is so EPIC!!!!!!!

    ~pnspi2

  • @pnspi Here ya go: /watch?v=w4gVlhjXWAo

  • Brilliant. Pure Brilliant.

  • omg i'm so sorry, it was me who accidentelly pressed dislike ^^"

  • This song always brings tears to my eyes :'(

  • es hermoso

  • So this is GLaDOS' little sister? XD

  • Nice:o

  • how did u find out how to do this

    its cool nad amazing

  • Amazing!!! Thank you!

    How about Reconstructing Science? ;)

  • Fantastic! Sort of thing I would do if I had more drives laying around.

  • I do love Portal 2 and I would play it endlessly, because I do Enjoy it... And now that :D I makes me cry :D

  • You re my new super hero :D

  • I swear the people who did the Portal soundtrack used floppy disks to do Hard light bridge.

  • THIS IS AMAZING! :D

  • My mind exploded of EPIC

  • Vampire killer from Castlevania

  • Who dislike, i fak him/her

  • @CrashThomasRacing I wouldn't even care about it, probably just one of those no-lifes who go around disliking every video.

  • @CrashThomasRacing maybe black mesa did that.

  • This is perfect!! You are really freaking amazing.

  • HOW THE FUCK DO U DO THATTTT!?!?!? D: [SAD FACE]

  • It's GLaDOS V1.0!

  • Comment removed

  • Mind = blown.

  • *drool*

  • can you remake this to fix the clacking

  • DUDE

DO LOUDER & PROUDER, the picco eletro ver.

    DO IT

  • Be careful they might shoot deadly neurotoxin at you...

  • Holy shit glades hacked your floppy drives o.O

  • Ah so GLaDOS builds turrets with floppy drives.

thats why there are so many computers stripped of pieces around Aperture Laboratories xD

  • did anyone else sing the song when it was playing?

  • Could you do Portal 2 Robots FTW? :D

    Pretty Plz!

  • Have you thought of doing Daft Punk's Harder Better Faster Stronger?

  • Do friday!

  • @Frithy2010 Ugh, no. Lol (Okay, maaybe-- if I run out of good songs)

  • @Sammy1Am You KNOW you want to do it. ;D

  • @Sammy1Am Better with "Friday, I'm in love" then.

  • @Sammy1Am

Screw that, do Khol's "Black Friday" or Bad Lip Reading's "Gang Fight"

  • @Sammy1Am 8 Bit Tunes of Friday sound so much better, Do floppy disk Friday!

  • GLaDOS got real mad from throwing out all of her floppy drives and then finding a new use for them here and accidentally bumped dislike.

  • That last note of each verse sounds a tad bit late, like there shouldn't be a rest between it and the note before it. Like "Well here we are again," you're putting a pause in between "a" and "gain" that shouldn't be there. Otherwise, great.

  • GLaDoS didnæt like this

  • Hey are you still doing this? Can you do the Potal 2 Turret Opera?

  • @YuJays Check my channel =)

  • Now out in 240p!

  • U man, are my fucking idol!

  • Holy AWESOME!!!!

  • OMG MIND BLOWN

  • cute :D

  • Also fucking email me for each bloody upload.

  • The funny part is that the very beginning sounds almost exactly like the real song. O.O

  • How much human testing was required to accomplish this I wonder?

  • 1 word: awesome

  • The creativity of human beings never ceases to amaze me.

  • ОХУЕТЬ

  • няшно))

  • Cake for Sammy it seems. :D

  • Whats that clikcing sound I keep hearing?

  • Very good, but sadly there is track 0 where the read/write-head hits the end which makes an ungood "KLACK", see at 1:08

  • @creeper283 Indeed. I've done my best to allow a little buffer room so that doesn't happen, but in this video I had the drives standing up vertically, and gravity seems to have made the *klack*s much worse.

  • @Sammy1Am I only have enough space on my Arduino Uno for 5 drives how did you fit 8?

  • These are some turrets in training...

  • someone accidentally hit the dislike button

  • @AltProtomix I've done that before.

  • I bet Jonathan Coulton would be proud of you, son :D

  • @AllAroundBang He re-tweeted a link to my "Still Alive" video. My Internet-life is complete. =D

  • sounds soooo much better that humans

  • 1 dislike WTF?????????

  • please do "the courtesy call", Portal 2 Soundtrack. Would be awesome.

  • OH GOD. It actually sounds like it's talking. Next thing you know, this guy is going to go out right and say he managed to spice his drives with Daft Punk's DNA.

  • YOU SIR HAVE A NEW SUBSCRIBER

  • FUCKIN AWESOME, IT'S SERIOUS, I'M CRYING HERE T_T

  • Want You Gone, as sung in the original artist's native tongue.

  • GLaDOS, why did you dislike this?!

  • @fkagahsdfs its obvious from who is that dislike!!!!!, right wheatley

  • @fkagahsdfs i disagree, i think GLaDOS out of anyone would be very happy of this :)

  • This is... I don't even... what the...?

Amazing as heck! That's all I've got... help? *meap*

  • Im having an nerdgasm!

  • @RonJoe223

Why would perfect pitch matter? It's an interval, not an absolute.

  • just annoy's me

  • I have the same floppy disk everyday T.T

  • No dislikes, that's what I like to see.

    Oh, shite, I jinxed it, didn't I?

  • @turnip89 yeah

  • This reminds me...

    Cupcakes!

  • This song was made to be played on disk drives.

  • Wtf ._.

  • CUPCAKES!!!!

Could you do Money for nothing - Dire Straights?

  • This just seems so appropriate to play the Portal 2 theme on machines. GLaDOS would be proud...if she felt emotions.

  • PLAY THE MOTHER FUCKING SKYRIM THEME

  • Unfortunately this reminds me of Cupcakes a little to much >.>

    Still kick ass though :D

  • How did this not go viral?

  • This shit needs to be in 7.1 THX surround didgitlally dolby 3D

  • That one note at the beginning is a half-step to high! It's perfect except for that! RAWR!

  • @TheAdmiralPancake Yeah... someone else pointed that out and I went back and checked... the music's okay, the drive just sounded weird on that note. Rest assured I'll be giving it a stern talking to so it doesn't happen again. =P

  • @Sammy1Am

Ok. It was really good. That was pretty much the only flaw.

  • @TheAdmiralPancake they're floppy drives being used as instruments. can't expect to be 100% perfect.

  • @shAdowgen064

I didn't. It was 100% perfect, though, except for that one note.

  • marry me?

  • i love your videos. this is amazing and i visit youtube just to watch the new ones.

  • Dear Santa...

  • Awesome. Please never stop making these vids :D

  • this is the best one I've heard yet good job

  • HUGE NERDGASUM!

  • I DEMAND PORTAL 2 TURRET OPERA

  • @wozzupgamer It's already up, /watch?v=wmkoJGm6y6k

  • are the floppy drives unmodified?

  • I used to write random comments, until i took an arrow to the knee

  • i'm a "random stranger" and a musician, and you made me smile ... many thanx! great stuff!

  • To any other person this is just weird. But to a geek like me it's......it'es just plain art :,)

  • Can I use these songs When I get to doing some music covers?

  • @oclictis1 The two Portal songs were arranged by @GermanSeabass .

  • At least these floppy drives are still useful

  • Awesome. I wish I can do that with my old floopy too. =p

  • Would it be possible (if someone could code it) to have these as a sound output for a keyboard, as in you play the notes on the keyboard and sound comes out of the floppies?

I'd love to attach a few to a keyboard and play stuff on it :P

  • @PhantomArcade /watch?v=z54b6VNfrtU It is, in fact, possible. The code is not pretty right now, but I do plan on getting it cleaned up and uploaded to github soonish (hopefully over Christmas break)

  • @Sammy1Am Oh wow, that is actually the coolest thing I have ever seen. EVER! Good luck with the coding as well!

  • Can you do the song of dbz?

  • wow men it't fantastic

  • Now play One Winged Angel.

  • This needs way more views

  • One that would be perfect for floppy drives: Terraria night music

  • SUBSCRIBED LIKE A BOSS!
