Thanks for sharing this Graham - don't know you personally but I joined Lonnie w year or so later - the wonderful Roy McKew on guitar, Ray Cooper on bass and Pete Merit on drums. I was so good no-one video-ed us !!! (Or perhaps they wiped them!!!). Tony Palmer's "All you need is Love" even cut us out. Didn't know Pete personally though funny enough though I know all his mates - Pete McClaine, Dave Buck, Dave Barrow etc. etc.. Anyway thanks again for this and if you have a 74 video.....
Lovely to see my old friend Pete Bocking playing behind Lonnie. I only recently found out that he'd passed away last year. He was a nice guy and a superb musician. RIP Pete.
I just bought a Lonnie Donegan vinyl LP in Albany NY, USA last week. 'Chewing Gum' which was a big hit in the US in 1961 is a great tune that stands the test of time. Thanks for posting this video. Lonnie was quite the showmanbeing only the son of a dustman. Heh!
Graham, then tell me, please? I was born curious, and that hasn't changed over the years! :o)
Mark looks like a handsome young man way back then. (Well, you all do!) Just sad to say that I was only 11 years old when this was recorded. I was born too late,- sorry! :o)
Anyway,- I used to have a street/skiffle group called Sycamore from 1977 up till 1984, and I have sung and played Chewinggum soooo many times! I even have a clip from Danish television where I'm singing it.
it was just a joke - the original lyrics are "the question is peculiar", but lonnie always sang "the drummer's gone peculiar" for no particular reason. Are you danish?
I know the original lyrics Graham! I have sung and played that song soooo many times when I was young!
And yes, I am Danish. And as I said before, I was just born too late. I have only seen Lonnie twice in my life. First time in 1984 at a Danish folk festival. Second time with Chris Barbers Jazz-band about 14 years ago? But he had such a great influence on me and my musical life. And I still love him soooo much!!! - His energy, his love for music was so inspiring for me!
Sorry about Peter. I recently lost an old boyfried. He decided to drink himself to death,- and so he did.... Life is strange sometimes....
Anyway.... If you're the drummer on that clip, you must always keep in mind, that you were very fortunate to have played with Lonnie Donegan! I've only seen him two times. But he's still one of the best!!!!
I've loved him since I was about ten years old. (I'm 48 now......) The first three songs I fell in love with was: Chewingum, Have a drink on me and The Battle of New Orleans.

Rest in peace Pete Bocking - it was a pleasure working with you, and appearing with you on this video from Germany in 1972.
Julia - if you want to know why "the drummer's gone peculiar" Mark won't tell you but I will!!!!!
