We love your video! Madison and Asia look like such sweethearts! We just lost our male elkhound Barclay a few days ago and we are very sad : ( but he had a great life and had many mtn. adventures. We still have Molly and Lucy both wonderful elkhounds! Watching your video helps ease our pain from our loss, thank you!
@Rallen2202 I'm sorry for the loss of Barclay ... the loss of a pet is a horrible feeling, but I'm glad that you've found my video and that it may ease your pain just a bit! I also applaud you on owning three! Our house is a handful with just one and her buddy Asia! We just got our first big snow and they are just wild about it!
Your video is beautiful. My husband and I had 4 elkhounds so far, so we know how wonderful they are. Our Quisha lived 17 years and was the light of our lives. We did many of the same things you have done with yours - she actually looked similar to Madison. I, of course, cried through the entire video, but it warms my heart to know such great people are making this elkhound happy.
OMG I love this breed so much I have a elkhound now called max he's seven at the moment misses me during the day one day I found him sitting at my bus stop waiting for me
I'm sorry I'm crying now :) I love this video she's probably still got her pup face as my dog does. :D
i have a norwegian elkhound also, he likes to lay in the back seat of my car and sleep, more so on the high way but when we stop at a light he will poke his nose out the window. it seems like he knows the speed of the car and lays back down when im going to fast for his taste. :] beautiful dogs though.
My "Moose" loves to ride and nuzzles her head under my hand when I shift gears. She carries her bowl to her bed to eat breakfast and though she has the run of the house, she prefers to stay with her 85-year-old disabled mistress (my Mom). They are loving and loyal companions, playful and friendly almost to a fault. What else do you want in a family dog?
I have a norwegian elkhound named Sonja. She is just a few months older than me and has been here since the day I was born. She has stolen my heart since the day we met. But sadly, she is very old and sick now (being 13) and is nearing the end of her long, loving life. I know that she doesn't have very long to live. If I've learned anything about this breed while having this dog, it's this: if you give them your heart, they'll be your friend for life.
Thanks. She was almost 15, & lived a good life. I lost my beloved buddy Strike, a Cattledog/Akita mix in 2006, at almost 14-1/2-which was especially hard as I raised him from a puppy, we traveled out west & had many adventures together. But that's part of life. I found out about missing link when he already had an incurable condition (DM), that's why I tell others-because I wish I'd known about it sooner. It'll save on vet bills, eBay's cheaper, & older dogs need it more, I think. How's Maddie?
@akire0124 Asia is a German Shepherd/Husky mix. My mom got her as a rescue and she's come a long way from being a very scared and skittish dog to one that loves to play and take care of Madison.
@rampegutten123 If by "Moose Dog" you are asking if they hunt moose then yes, some of them do or are used to hunt big game. Our Elkhound, however, hunts nothing :)
@rampegutten123 I think the word 'elg', in Norway, refers to what we call a moose (in US), but was translated literally to Elk though what we call an "elk" here is a very different (though related) animal. Does that make sense? Hope I haven't confused you further! You can google "norwegian elkhound" and find a better explanation than mine, I'm sure. :O)
@syntikka96 No, we've never attempted to use Maddie for any type of hunting; she's purely a spoiled elkhound. We know that they are used for both bear and moose hunting ... that's awesome. You really don't see a lot of elkhounds around ... at least in our area ... we do the humane soceity walk in a large city (usually around 5,000) pets and have never seen another one.
Thank you for making me smile, I lost my Norwegian Elkhound last June and these pics brought back sooo many good memories of my own with my sweet girl, I miss her so much.
@Loni332 I'm glad that my video made you smile. I need to upload some more, the past month Maddie has been sick though so she's been taking it easy :) Have a wonderful day!
@mrsoye2008 Thanks for a heartfelt video. Dogs rock. I lost my Norwegian Elkhound girl in Jan, she was also a sweetheart-Norwegians are a great breed. About Asia, Missing Link Plus (Canine) is an OUTSTANDING food supplement that I gave to my last two dogs in their later years. Everyone that uses it seems to agree it's an awesome product. I have NO connection w/ them, only saw the difference it made so let others know b/c older dogs need a boost. You can save a few $ buying it on eBay :O) Peace!!
@bookguitarguy I'm sorry to hear that you loss of your dog ... years later it still seems to be hard (we lost a golden retriever 6 years ago and yellow lab 2 years ago) to have felt that loss. I'm absolutely going to do some more research on the Missing Link Plus ... thanks for the tip! Have a great day.
Madison is so like our elkhound Rex. He sleeps on our bed too. His favourite place is in the bedroom bay window where he sits and barks at any dogs that go past the house. It's nice to see another family as crazy about their elkhound as we are.
Do you think this is a good choice for someone who never have owned a dog? I really want one, but I have no experience... (and I live in Norway, so this should be the perfect dog, haha)
i miss my elkhound soooo much right now. He's back in massachusetts w/ my family. I'm out in LA. I really miss him soo much. He's 12 years old already.
5610wiston ... I apologize I deleted your comment totally by accident :( Maddie loves to be in the center of everything ... even between my husband and I when we sleep :) She's spoiled to say the least. I'm so glad someone gets to share a dog with similarites!
Madison's beautiful! I've had 3 Elkhounds...the first was an Elkhound mix named Maddy. :) I had Kodi for 11 years, but she sadly passed away a couple of years ago. I then adopted Skyler Henley through the Norwegian Elkhound Rescue program. She'll turn two years old on October 5th. I see SO many similarities between Madison and my 3 Elkhounds. Great video. :)
@VickieSB Thanks, for multiple reasons. You're my very first comment. It's never easy to lose a pet, but it's wonderful you've got others to help you cope. We've been told that Maddie is short for the breed and she carries a bit (3-5lbs) of extra weight, but we love every bit of her. Thanks again.
Elkhounds are definitely spoiled, its hard not to give them whatever they want with those pointy ears and goofy smiles :)

Just stopped by to watch this great video again.
I also wanted to say that I find Elkhounds to be mystical.
They bring something peaceful and solid into your life, they really watch out for you and they would lay down their life for you in a heartbeat.
They know when you are sick or mad or sad or grieving and then they do it with you so as to share the burden.
I know it sounds silly, but for 30 years,no matter how bad life got, I had an elkhound to tell me it will be ok.
sojoyful 11 months ago
@sojoyful are they protective?
mizzoulibertarian 9 months ago
@mizzoulibertarian
Yes they are quite protective and owners must be very responsible.
They are just full of love for you but if they deem anyone to be a threat to you
they may bite, and they are very suspicious until they know you.
We are very responsible and explain that she is a watch dog and people
understand what that means. If they say is she friendly we say not really.
They are excellent at protecting your property I consider them a working dog
with very very high intelligence & love.
