damn, I love this. And btw, knowing "how" to get to this position isn't very important... I had no idea how to do the mate, but I could put the pieces into any random spot, and with enough playing around and experimentation, I could get the pieces into this position, so it's not all that hard to figure out. Also, I thought the whole idea about the barrier at 3:00 was incredible, I never saw that comin
From 4:55 and 4:56 I learned the most(!!!). Never thought that wasting tempo could mean winning the game =). Thanks now I understand the W-Manouvre better.
There is no question that this video coupled with Stars Wars styled Prequel is very informative. HOWEVER, if I may add. At 2.31 in this video You say "so he plays Kc6", BUT Kb7 is so much trickier to mate him. I don't know if you still make videos but I for one would love one more addition to see this Series complete. lol, I dont half talk some pish sometimes. but what I'm telling you is true.
this one helped me but if any bad player is playing like thinking that they will loss and they will not try to escape so what we will do at 2nd position if you pleas make a video which is totally forced and mate
Get the Bishop and Knight to the middle of the board with the Bishop protecting the Knight two squares away. This will create a protected fortress for the two pieces as your king Zugzwangs the King to the edge. You won't have to move the Knight and Bishop much and will do most of the work with your King trying to stay on oppposite color as Bishop.
The title sounds a little perverted. Lol! But great video. And also to the people who say black should just forfiet. You can only have 50 moves after there are no pawns. Then its a draw
so, i have a question, if both players are really good and know a lot about chess and one player finds himself in this bad situation, wouldn't he just forfeit, knowing that his loss is inevitable? oh i see, it's more of a learning tool, to learn basic stuff about chess
@DestinyQx At any level above 1800 or so, it would be assumed that both players would know how to accomplish this mate, and a resignation is likely. Below that, I'd play it out from the losing side to make the guy prove he can do it.
But yes, the exercise of learning this mate is extremely useful in understanding how minor pieces cooperate.
anyway, it's not really that hard to get the king to the edge of the board
anyone with a basic understanding of the dark and light squares (using the knight and bishop to control opposite colors) or anyone rated around 1600 UCSF should be able to do it easily
If you want to know what a REAL PAIN IN THE A** is, try to mate Fritz 11 or Rybka with knight+bishop from a position where the black king is in the midde of the board (not that starting position in this video) on highest level... ^^ :D
And then again try it within the 50-moves rule! Good luck! ^^
-Eather you can think EVERY move far more than 16 halfmoves ahead, or
-Fritz is a complete idiot,
I think both sides are wrong. But I admit it is always possible to mate within 50 moves, but I only want to say your "20 moves give or take a few" claim is much too optimistic. There are postions it might be possible in 20 moves, but others are much more difficult, especially if the enemy king is near a corner of the wrong bishop-colour. Greetings ^^
"The bishop and knight checkmate in chess is the checkmate of a lone king which can be forced by a bishop, knight, and king. With the stronger side to move and with perfect play, checkmate can be forced in at most thirty-three moves from any starting position"
So, in most positions it takes longer than 20 moves. Ok. Enough now! Greetings.
This is nonsense. Of course mate is coming when the king is placed against the wall. Let's see you mate the king when it is placed at the center of the board.
I am sick and tired of these crappy videos. Anybody can do this if the king is in a corner or wall, but an explanation on how to get him there would be helpful ffs...
Check my channel. I've got a second video that starts with the black king in the center of the board and my pieces in a corner, and demonstrates how to pin the black king to the wall and then get to this position.
Mate can ALWAYS be accomplished in the KBN vs. K endgame against any opponent, IF you make the right moves. If you are playing the lone King side you should try to stay close to a corner that is the opposite color of your opponents bishop. If your opponent is weak you can get a draw with the 50 move rule.
Checkmate with knight and bishop can't always be accomplished. If the opponent's king is in the center of the board, it is impossible unless the opponent willingly cooperates and makes moves intentionally to be checkmated.
Well done, this is a good demonstration of a practical method which forces mate as quickly as possible against an optimal defence! Here's another way that may be of interest:
i will be putting out another bishop and knight mate video soon. that one will explain how to get set up in this sort of position from any position. I will focus on big ideas instead of specific moves.
This is a good video and one should practice this in case he ever is in this situation. I have never had it occur in any of my games and have only seen it once and the one with the advantage couldn't win. Still it is good to study it regularly just in case. Thanks for the video once again.

@olivercarlehed Push him to H8 instead of A8.

freaky011 2 years ago
As you say ... I enjoyed this video but its not complete.
You see its easy to mate a king when you have a position like this.
Although its completely different when you have a random one.
Ofcourse it can still be accomplished (talking to you frozencloud17) but it would take at least a 15min video for that to cover!

That is completely false, frozencloud. It's a guaranteed win from any position, in far less than 50 moves.
Don't post disinformation if you don't know what you're talking about.
