I am sorry to hear about this, but I want you to know there are egos in every job field including nonprofits. Some of these local grassroots places are very disorganized but they have many dedicated people. Keep Austin Beautiful has a list of activities that you can get involved in. I am sorry for your experience in Rhizome.
The Rhizome Collective does a lot of good - both in so-called charity work and education. If you've never been to RUST, you don't know what you're missing! We need folks working like they do as everything starts to fall apart (i.e. peak oil, droughts, food security issues, population shifts, etc.). Like a floating island of rhizomatous plant structures, I believe that they will find their place again :)
It's a bad day when Austin starts to crack down on it's hippie population. People move to Austin to learn how to be hippier. Without them, it's just another traffic jam.
Why is it always "our side" which must concede and fall in with defeatism? Really, am I the only man who feels like a fight? Peeps need to be rememberin' why they get into these kinds o' struggles to begin with (sustainability, local autonomy, etc.)... it's because we wanna win! This so-called eviction notice is an invitation to a real fight, not a pity party.
Yours is a great and noble project. I'm sure it's a lot more important than one warehouse. Should that warehouse not be usable, there are others.
You are doing the right thing. Look for nonprofit contractors, but also try other places as well. People and egos are always there, that won't go away. You have to deal with it. This will ONLY make you stronger.
Problems don't leave once this is resolved, please be aware. I guess it's God's way of saying, "Yoohoo, time to grow."
There's someone who has money and wants the warehouse - it's always about greed. I rub elbows with some local sustainable groups - I'll forward this on. Here in Tulsa, OK we are fighting city counselors so that we can have community gardens without having to pay $1,000 to get permits - to grow food. Makes ya feel like they wanna round us up and put citizens into pens for later disposal.
Get yourself agun. It's all they understand.

gosh - aint it wonderful that you have no property rights.
If you actually had property rights then no bureaucrat could force you to pay them because your existence displeases them.
Enjoy the thugocracy comrade.

18,000 books to prisoners. WOW, what a waste of books and time. The prisoners must be happy though, just another place they can hide their shanks.

i thought Austin was progressive.

It sounds a great program. Certainly deserves the support of the community.
seamoremonster 2 years ago 6
Austin is "progressive" in the sense that there are a lot of pretentious upper-middle-class white folks who shop at Whole Foods.

Interesting comment. Astute. Yup. Makes sense. Believe me, i know places like that. And it goes on generation after generation.

Smells like they just want you gone. Cowboy justice in action. Just put a big Dallas Cowboy banner up, then the idiots will think your a-okay.
