She didn't phrase the response very well by trailing off into 'cultures'. It's a fair point to say that girls are culturally taught to use their sexuality as a tool, and from an early age, but it doesn't follow that a father accepts it as sexual manipulation. That's where her argument breaks down; unless she thinks all fathers are incestuous pedophiles, which is ludicrous.
Surely, this man's daughters love him as their "daddy". This woman is suggesting something ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. I suggest that it is this woman who is "sick", rather than the gentleman she is accusing of being so....
I accept her theory to an extent. It IS just a theory but her argument isn't far removed from those of psychodynamics. What they didn't seem to understand was that she wasn't suggesting fathers were INTENTIONALLY teaching their daughters to flirt with their fathers but the flirtatious/suggestive/coy 'are you going to kiss Daddy goodnight?' conditions girls into manipulating men using their sexuality.
I was brought up in the 1970s my mother was a so called feminist that let men dictate every aspect of our lives.I was brought up to believe that all things good that are womanly come in flat shoes and baggy cord trousers and its NOT TRUE! Its not important how little girls as long as they respect themselves and have good role models.
Problem is in order 2b feminine these days is. all about sex. if a girl does embriodery its concidered 'lame' but stripping off on a night out is 'cool'. To be masculine you have to behave like a silly little boy. Why has it become a crime for ppl to be polite to each other? if a dad sits his child on his knee THATS NORMAL. dont put sex into every single act. Filling car with petrol - not sex. cuddling your child - not sex. stop being 1 dimentional
What does it mean to dress a daughter as a tart?? It can't really mean dressing it up as a pastry.....sorry but as an American i often get confused by British lingo.
SICK!men are awesome.silent heroes. on behalf of all men and my forefathers who built the world the roads the bridges the ships the trains the spaceships the planes the cars invented the phones the radios the tvs medical cures dug the coal put out the fires saved lives fought+ died to protect us like my grandfathers etc simplistic shallow anti male drivel will end. fatherhood MUST return equality for men+families. all womens lib has created is fatherless workless boys with no male role model.
Coming from a young man myself I do admire Germaine's mind in terms of her intellect but every so often she becomes mis-guided and that does let her down in my opinion. There are men out there who can and would help women fight for their rights.
@LightLife4 im sorry, but what intellect does germaine greer have? what has she done to show that she is an intellectual person? i have read one of her books, and found it to be loaded with faulty logic, badly constructed arguments, blatant hypocrisy, and double standards. this is probably a result of having an arts degree- arts graduates are generally very bad at thinking logically and critically.
@33LB Which book was it you read? bearing in mind I haven't read any, the only ones I know of are The Female Eunuch and The Beautiful Boy. I still think she does have some intellect it's just that she goes about it the wrong way and makes harsh judgements before obtaining all facts e.g. barbie- sex fantasy, just a basic toy for young girls in my opinion; girls learn to flirt by kissing daddy, I kissed my mum lots when I was young and it wasn't flirting, just mother-son love as I saw it.
@LightLife4 read the female eunuch. even the foreword is full of double standards such as- it's OK for women to value men based on their penis size, but if a man values a woman's breasts, that's objectification.
and then there is a chapter in which germaine greer implies the Y chromosome is responsible for crime, because people born with an extra Y chromosome are more likely to be in prison- sorry, but anyone with a science degree knows genetics is not as simplistic as that.
@LightLife4 the beautiful boy is a hypocritical work in itself. germaine greer has always spoken out against so called "objectification" of women, and yet, the beautiful boy is a book in which greer objectifies little boys. this point of hypocrisy was raised to greer in a BBC interview and she didn't have an answer- she just sat there with an open mouth.
greer writes well, i'll give her that- but a good command of the english language does NOT mean her ideas are "intellectual"- theyre not
@Evenflowist314 The problem is that not everyone believes the whole being equal thing. A lot of the time when a man, or woman, holds a door for someone e.g a shop, in a bid to be curtious that act of kindess is thrown back in their face.
Steinem's idea of feminism meant a woman had to be pro-abortion, anti-family and anti-man -- anti-anything moral! I always believed that feminism was about what a woman wanted to do. That meant a woman had the right to make a choice. Palin and Bachmann are true feminists. They are pro-life, pro-family and they made it in a man’s world without invoking the victim status! Steinem is more about politics than about feminist! As far as eco-feminism? Learn about United Nations Agenda 21.
@jimmypinch so you have kids and so you don't want to contemplate these ideas?
the mans clearly very nice and genuine but also very thick and not thoughtful.
shes talking about how we learn behaviors as children that we use in later life, like women being encouraged to be manipulative, men being encouraged not to express their emotions in the same way that women are.
i think people have completely misinterpreted the meaning of the word "flirting". it is not, like hitchens says, literally a sexually motivated act, but rather a way in which young girls are socialised to get their own way by charming the opposite sex. people are so easily shocked and offended. i will, however, agree that she made the point very badly.
why doesnt she and all the radical hate mob realise theres good and bad in everyone. she has been given a huge platform to spout her poison simply because a few posh men sad something patronising to her in the 60s. big time rich people always patronise, there is no war of the sexes, were all human,. the only battle has ever been between the rich and the poor. but again you have good and bad for both. lets talk about the really oppressed , the poor the sick and the disabled
do you notice how none of her points link up to anything else she says?? just rambling about the dangers of men!! news flash darling, women abuse more children, also children brought up by single mothers are a much more prone to abuse and harm. do your fucking research you hatemonger
I noticed that too, within the first 30 seconds of her speech she meanders on 4 different points that don't really relate at all...it's astonishing that she is allowed to hold the title of professor.
... , and greer is a professor. No wonder our schools and universities are failing, with idiots like her teaching students. She is a disgrace for saying what she said, and wel done to the father in the audience who put her in her place.
Yes, I've looked again. As far as I understand culture, it is the opposite of what you imply -- e.g. NOT the totality of actions feeding into larger structure, BUT the composite presuppositional basis from which one thinks self-group-norms. Ergo, thinking that telling my daughters to kiss me goodnight is a de facto expression of their 'love' is the inculcation of one type of culture - the hegemonic. What she is suggesting is that such a formulation conditions what you take as empirical.
@Andreox Now why did you put the word love in inverted commas? You and Germaine Greer don't know any more about this gent and his daughters than I, so what makes you think that the love he says exists between them is something other than what he says it is. I doubt you would describe your feelings toward your own family as "the inculcation of one type of culture-the hegemonic". Such mechanistic, pseudo-scientific language scarcely does justice to the richness of human relationships now does it?
The disciplines of psychology, philosophy and sociology surely grew out of a desire to shed light on human behaviour NOT to cloud our understanding with lofty academic jargon. Most right thinking people would balk at Greer's comments because they imply there is an unhealthy incestuous element in our families. Only a childless academic living in an ivory tower would think that it is acceptable to make that suggestion, and only someone with more reading than experience would think to defend her.
Greer's comments are appropriately inflammatory to fuel profitable controversy, general enough to upset half the population, but sufficiently vague so as to avoid making any assertions that can actually be disproved. Rather than appealing to our need for truth and conciliation she dredges up and manipulates our hidden paranioas and resentments. Impressionable young girls who hear these comments may possibly come to view their dad - and their future partners - with unnecessary suspicion. Sick.
She wasn't being precise because it wasn't a point about precise fathers, but rather the cultural construction of fatherhood. Unless she listed every father on earth, it could never be precise. It was 'culture' and 'fathers', not Mr X and his daughter named whatever....To jump to the specificity of 'you' on such a general point (which it was meant to be, not a smear against Mr X) is to infer wrongly and construe the relevance wrongly.
@Andreox Look carefully at what you have written and think it through. What is a culture if not the actions and attitudes of many individuals of whom he is one?. How is she in a position to make remarks about any fathers she hasn't met and observed in person? And if she is going only on the minute proportion she has actually met, how can her remarks be worth anything at all? Speaking "generally" on a subject shouldn't be used as a cover for venting prejudices.
Germaine Greer is well-spoken, intelligent and above all TRUTHFUL. the disgusting, sexist man in the audience luckily wears his stupidity for all to see by trying to contradict her.
@ProudLiberal110, Proud Liberal??!! So why publish hate against the Chinese? It seems your Liberal until you perceive a threat. Your a first class hypocrite, just like Greer. So you hate men and the Chinese. Thats sexist and racist, so how you think your Liberal is a joke. Ofc the man is contradicting Greer, shes spouting shite, just like you. Your 21 and already full of hate and poison. I think you need help.
I am a feminist, but I don't think that Greer is doing the movement any justice by saying things like children kissing their fathers goodnight is "flirting". That sounds like controversy for the sake of conytroversy.
She's making a point badly. The point has nothing to do with smearing fathers, but with the way in which girls are taught to obtain what they want through emotional manipulation. I've known numerous women over the years who were seemingly incapable of asking for something in a direct, open manner, but who had developed a neurotic need to flirt, dissemble, etc..
Bullshit. Any academic to be taken seriously knows full well how to make a point without being incendiary. Of course Greer thrives on controversy; her statement was deliberately worded to disgust and paint a black-hearted cynical view of a father-daughter relationship. That girls learn to be manipulative by kissing their fathers good night is contrived nonsense from the realms of her twisted imagination. Little boys kiss their parents goodnight too.
men WAKE UP. the feminist movement simply wants all men destroyed period. they dont give a damn about equality or kids or fairness or justice or families. greer has destroyed all of these things she even hates women too lol. she is a self obsessed hateful egotist whos made millions out of creating war of the sexes. shes distorts the past and history and the truth. men die younger in every nation 5 to 8 years younger, they coimmit suicide at 4 times the rate, they get cancer screen 5 times less
What an awful thing to say regarding fathers. She did not offend only that father she offended very father in the world. This woman is a stark raving witch of epic proportions. We kiss our daughters and our sons good night. Muslim people kiss 3 times and when grown up too. The woman is MAD.
She was making a general point about how culture conditions aspects of feminine behaviour. The gentelman -oddly -felt the need to pose the specificities of his own relationship with his daughters giving him a bed-time kiss as some kind of example of something. The argument would have gone much better had GG simply said, how would I know about the specifics of your daughters, your raising of your daughters or what they express in their relationship to you ...
@Andreox "There's always been this sinister culture...and it's always been sexual...little girls learn to flirt with their fathers...kiss daddy goodnight and all this business". That's what she said. The man inferred, quite understandably, that Greer's comments had relevance to him as he is the father of little girls. She wasn't precise about her accusation, it was aimed at fathers in the abstract. If you were a father you would probably feel similarly appalled.
@MrJackonion So you're a liar too! You quote Greer: "... little girls learn to flirt with their fathers...kiss daddy goodnight and all this business" as if there was no video, as if her facial expression and body language when she said "kiss daddy goodnight" did not make it crystal clear that she was quoting and mimicking a PARTICULAR behaviour, in which little girls learn to be coy and flirtatious - lifted shoulder, the pretend shyness - and are rewarded for it. Well done, Mr case in point.
@iverglas Yes, she was mimicking a PARTICULAR behaviour and suggesting it was sufficiently commonplace for it to be a problem worth mentioning in front of millions on national television. You yourself just said "in which little girls learn..." NOT, "some little girls", or - even better - "a tiny minority of little girls of whom I have had direct experience". Nope, no need for accuracy or precision when affected moral indignation is so much easier, eh?
This is why the father raised his objection, can't you see that? Her points were so broad that they implicated virtually everyone in the country. The guy in the audience obviously felt the need to defend himself from the accusation that he teaches his daughters to flirt with him. If the accusation wasn't aimed at him then she should have chosen her words more carefully, words are, after all, her stock in trade. You too should choose your words more carefully: liar? very childish.
Greer is one of many vile, monstrous nitwits and "experts" who have been put on a pedestal by the evil, cretinous old hippies who have run media and academia for decades. They've brought NOTHING to our society besides arrogance, perversion and destruction. The sooner they all die off, the better off Western civilization will be. They simply can't die fast enough.
Wow the usual unthinking viscous youtube comments. The problem with GG is she would rather say something that shocks and offends than actually make a point. She cannot live without attention. What she was trying to say was, there are certain customs passed down from generation to generation which perpetuate inequalities. Learning how flirt, be coy or manipulative starts with basic interactions with our children. The sexualisation of childhood is not just a bra burning rad-fem issue.
She is a stereotypical Germaine Greer. All the Germaine Greers I've ever met have been exactly the same. No intellectual self-discipline. She flaps frantically around from point to point like an angry moth, bumping her head against the truth every now an again but never quite making it through the glass. Poor lass.
..... That retailers DID target young girls. It just never popped into my head. What a ten year old wears under her trousers is an issue that I don't rightly care about.
The whole issue was invented by stubborn uber-feminists, who have blamed ALL men for a problem which - As far as I'm aware, MOST men were completely oblivious of.
Effectvely - Don't focus your own irrationally paranoid anger on me! YOU brought it up...
What a funny bunch you are -- could you be bigger stereotypes?! One day she was a slag, now she can't get any (sez you wastes of space). Women just can't win, can we?! Oh, well, I guess if we sit still, cross our legs and shut up, until instructed to do otherwise. Pretty funny. Oh, Germaine, we really haven't come much of a way at all, with ugly stupid vermin like this infesting cyberspace now. But maybe this is the only place they have left ...
@iverglas you shouldn't be surprised to be treated this way. your being treated the same way a man would be if he spouted off sexist nonsense. this is the price os equality. you risk being treated like a man when you say stupid things. Don't expect to be on the same footing as men and than get upset for being treated like one. ignorant people...
@mpnders1 wtf are you yammering about - "you shouldn't be surprised to be treated this way"? Did you have a dream about me? Where do you imagine I said anything about being treated any way? I came here to laugh at the prehistoric pieces of dinosaur crap who inhabit places like this - because the real world has left you all behind. Women have won. Sad, stupid, nasty, miserable little men like you all here have lost. Evolution gunned ya down, boys. Want a last meal? I'm buying! but not cooking ;)
This old boiler was a right old slag in the 60's had more pricks than a second hand dart board , more cocks than a second hand fairground rifle , and now she's a sad lonely old bag desperate to shock people to get attention will only get worse .
I'm saddened by a woman who has written so many good books on feminism and has served the movement in a meaningful way in the past now says such disgusting things.
No wonder feminism is now nothing by but femo-suppresmism.
The BBC has had Greer on time & time again and will continue to do so, because it's as left-wing and warped as Greer. It's the ones they don't allow you to hear that you should be listening to. GET THE MAIN-STREAM MEDIA, PARTICULARLY THE KGB-BBC OUT OF YOUR LIFE!
This dinosaur should be in a museum under MAN HATER her evil is disgusting the so called fighter for women's rights how come Greer more women are depressed then ever before in history.
I have a son and daughter, and as a psychologist am well aware of theories of sexuality such as the Freud-like references Greer was mis-quoting. My husband kisses and cuddles both of them in exactly the same way. We are not in any sort of denial about it! Sadly, the valuable comments Greer often makes, are made to look ludicrous when she tries to jump on the band wagon of pseudo-psychology and misses, crashing in public and flailing when challenged.
@MsRockyRacoon that's bullshit, your husbands actions towards you and your children are two completely different attitudes. It's unfair to generalize every male of the family like she does, and if your theory is correct, then if he bangs you like that, i'd keep an eye on your kids.
Her comments are out of order, and for any women to agree with this is out of order too.
Women have been gaining rights from early 1900's, even before that, so why she's still complaining, i don't know.
@ninjerch You might want to actually read what I wrote properly before replying. I said "my husband kisses and cuddles both of them in exactly the same way", both of them means both the children, NOT ME you moron! One is a boy and one is a girl, as I make clear in the first line, my point is they he does not treat the boy or girl any differently from each other. As for saying I agree with her comments, as I said if you read my comment PROPERLY, you would see I clearly say she is incorrect.
@ninjerch I removed it you twit because it was posted twice. You should be embarrased that you can't even read one paragraph without getting it completely wrong, get yourself back to school!! Now I've EXPLAINED everything to you, I'm going back to my life.
@MsRockyRacoon Uhm, actually i'm still at school, so that failed. Thus you don't have a leg to stand on; you're arguing with a kid. Congratulations, i'm sure you can go bask in your glory and get back to your "Life". I'm sure your council flat needs cleaning.
@ninjerch Funny I kind of guessed you might still be at school which is why you sound like a child when you write. Think you'll find it's a 4 bed detached, but I'm not one to brag, lol! Maybe if you do real well at school you can leave your council flat soon though, take care and don't forget to practice your reading x
@MsRockyRacoon - I hope you listen to your clients better than you listened to Greer, dear! Should I expect better of an educated woman than of the illiterate louts littering cyberspace and this page?
I think so. I should expect you not to MISREPRESENT what Greer said and meant: she spoke about *people saying* "kiss daddy goodnight" *and the way they say it* and the way they encourage girls to interact with others. She said NOTHING about you. Narcissist much?
@iverglas I absolutely do listen. What I heard was a generalisation made by Greer which, in your own words, described the way people say "kiss daddy goodnight" as having some kind of hidden implication. I am using my personal example to illuminate what utter rot Greer was talking and, thanks for your concern, but narcissism does not really apply here. I speak for myself, correct, but I am also a voice for many parents. Her sensationalist nature means she over generalises which causes offence.
@MsRockyRacoon you dishonest twerp. "What I heard was a generalisation made by Greer which, in your own words, described the way people say 'kiss daddy goodnight' as having some kind of hidden implication."
No, you liar. What you hear was ... the way SOME PEOPLE say it, as teaching little girls to be coy and manipulative.
Your "personal example" obviously has FUCK ALL to do with what Greer was talking about. So you were using your dishonest crap to try to discredit her, and it didn't work.
@iverglas Dishonesty?Lying? Swearing? What an abusive and clearly disturbed person you are. I will not be opening any of your future replies. You need to take your medication.
@MsRockyRacoon --- hahahaha, ask me whether I care. How interestingly you phrase your reply. "Dishonesty? Lying?" -- yes, that's you: a dishonest liar. "Swearing?" -- yes, that's me, because I'm honest and don't pretend that it is form rather than substance that counts. You need to get off the internet, if you think that "take your medication" is civil discourse. It's schoolyard assholery, is what it is, you dishonest liar.
@iverglas I've read your replies to MsRocky Rackoon and I agree that you are going way over the top by accusing her of being a liar; it's a very serious accusation to make. As for your views, I believe that in time you will acquire a better understanding of how the ideas of radical feminists such as Greer have divided the sexes and fostered an attitude of self-centred materialism which has undermined the natural instinct for men and women to love and care for each other. Time will tell.
@MrJackonion And I care what you say because ... you're a patronising twerp? "In time you will acquire a better understanding ..." I was reading Greer as she was writing, sweetie. I've been a feminist as long as Greer has. I am not a follower of Greer, I am a contemporary of Greer. I have had an understanding of capitalism and patriarchy since I was 15, very possibly before you were born. And proud to be a materialist -- a term you might want to look up. Time has told: you've lost. Buck up.
@iverglas Ha! Ha! My apologies, I inferred from your bizarre linear thinking, bad manners and histrionic posturing that you were an adolescent sociology student. Terrible stereotyping, tut tut. You claim - with a questionable pride - to having had "an understanding of capitalism and patriarchy since I was 15", it sounds like you've still got the same one. Read some good books or speak to some men, do something to broaden it.
@iverglas Very arrogant aren't you? Do you want me to coutn the fallacies made in your commment?
Anyway what does marxist have to do with feminism? Nothing at all! Class in society is not the same a gender. Females have never been treated like a homogeneous class, so this makes feminist criticism flawed.
Feminists don't undertand patriarchy at all. I bet you are the typical spolied privileged middle class white woman. I bet you don't care about societies male underclass, do you?
Isn't it basic pop-psychology that states a girls relationship with her father will have an affect on how she conducts herself later on in life in adult relationships?
There's the stereotypical 'girl with daddy issues' etc.
If you disagree, then disagree but fucking think for yourself and drop the bullshit faux moral outrage you acquire from reading about this in The Daily Mail.
We are so fucking anti-intellectual as a society that most of you are here knocking Greer simply for the sake of it.
Anti-intellectualism, anti-feminism, anti-everything else that generates progress in society and improves the lives of groups of people who have suffered discrimination, exploitation and oppression.
The discriminators, exploiters and oppressors will use every trick their money will buy, and the stupid and nasty among us will fall for them.
@Mrfriendlymilk -- er? I got the reply by email and it gave me the giggles, but there it is ... gone. Perhaps it was yer own "mangling of the English language"? Yet another one who needs to look up "civil discourse". At bottom (haha, a little joke for you there MrFM), it means having the decency to listen and respond to what people say -- be the person Germaine Greer or me. You people and your friends fool neither the world nor one another with your banal insults and lies.
oh yea sure who else is more qualified to give parenting guidelines than a childless attention whoring misandrous feminazi cunt with paedophilic tendencies!!! what next, nappy change=rape?
Who does she think she is? It's a shame that nobody reminded her that she is a lesbian with no children & therefore her lack of adult experience on any family unit dynamics disqualifies her from commenting on this subject. Any pro active parent, male or female, should be able to kiss (as in peck!) & hug their children as an expression of love, support and how much they are valued within the family without this sexualisation crap being thrown in by childless feminist.
Far better people to have in the media. Grotesque Germs has made a career from being a warped, aloof and lying bitch, cut off from and in contempt of the magic of male friendship.
Among her relentless and malcontent ghastlinesses, she wrote that the best past part of having a penis for a day would be getting rid of it at the end of it; better mine than yours, Germs.
She craves publicity! and has no kids, so no experience of the reality of this, a kiss is a kiss, and all humans need a hug from their family, and to suggest a kiss from a dad to a daughter is sexual is SICK. Thankfully I have a great relationship with my daughter, and kiss and hug her, if this crazy woman had her way it should not be allowed.. she is a sad old leftie, with very little support for her ideology... the RAPE, GOOD NIGHT KISS statements are there for cheap publicity
@iancoley Yes, it's SICK. You're insanely angry about it because it's patently false.
Think about this: if a small child said "you're an idiot," would you take offence? No. It's a small child. What the fuck does it know?
But then you see Germaine Greer on here, someone you clearly already "know" is wrong, and you get outraged. So evidently you take her seriously, at least in this respect. She didn't say it was unnatural, or that it wouldn't be allowed - only that it panders to gender roles.
This dried out old hag has no childeren of her own. She has run out of ideas because femenism has died out.........,women have most things in this country on a par with men. .to say a daughter giving her dad a bedtime kiss is "flirting" is just sick ! and shows her own perverted views. Also she should face an inquiry/hate crime, for accusing our soldiers of being rapists if they have a chance. Why can,t this Australian Witch leave us alone? and go home and upset her own people.
@BREDATOR1 No! For christ's sake don't send her back here we have enough worries. We're sorry for people like her ok. Just try her as a witch and burn her at the stake like you used to
What stupid comments! She ISN'T accusing him of paedophilia but is referring to the behaviours that might seem innocent and cute when young, but later are displayed sexually. A young girl exacting a kiss seems sweet, but later is represented as flirtation. Her comment criticises the social conditioning of children, virtually from birth, by their parents and their environment; gender expectations are imposed upon children through these types of behaviour.
@Luster21 Not at all. Greer describes the coyness with which young girls might 'ask from a kiss from Daddy' - a kiss need not include this element of coyness which is perhaps later expressed as flirtation. Also, I'm not saying that it's entirely a bad thing merely that that is the reality of our world; behaviours learnt in childhood are displayed later in life. That doesn't mean we should necessarily avoid them, merely be aware of this element of social conditioning.
@yzenanja The reason why so many are upset with her ludicrous remarks, is she isnt making a simple point of learned behavior from birth, which happens to virtually all animals in both sexes. Shes implying that a girls sexualisation is the direct fault of men/fathers. I think she hints, its some sort of paedophillic dark desire of men. Blaming men for womens choices is cowardly and pathetic. I give the fairer sex more credibility the Germaine. Shes lost her mind to feminist poison.
What a twisted old bint she is. This only serves to highlight how much she hates men and blames them for all ills. Pathetic really. How anyone could take a daughter giving her dad a goodnight kiss, as some sort of coerced pedophillic act is beyond the pale. Doesnt matter how clever you are, when your mind has been poisoned to this degree, you only sound ridiculous.
WHAT ELSE SHE IS, BESIDE A PERVERT FEMINIST? WHY SHE HAS BEEN CONSIDERED CLEVER OR IMPORTANT??!! SHE IS TEACHING YOUNG PEOPLE AT UNIVERSITY WHAT?! THIS WOMAN IS SICK AND PERVERT!!! WHAT SHE KNOWS ABOUT CHILDREN?!! SHE IS NOT A MOTHER. PERVERT, STUPID BITCH!!!! IN NORMAL, HEALTH, SOUND SOCIETY, SHE SHOULD BE ADMITTED IN TO PSYCHIATRIC UNIT, IMMEDIATELY!!! PROBABLY SHE WAS ONE PERVERT FLIRTING WITH HER FATHER

But isn't this the women who think that teenage boys are much hotter than grown men?
buldgingballs 5 months ago
Coming from a young man myself I do admire Germaine's mind in terms of her intellect but every so often she becomes mis-guided and that does let her down in my opinion. There are men out there who can and would help women fight for their rights.
LightLife4 6 months ago
@LightLife4 im sorry, but what intellect does germaine greer have? what has she done to show that she is an intellectual person? i have read one of her books, and found it to be loaded with faulty logic, badly constructed arguments, blatant hypocrisy, and double standards. this is probably a result of having an arts degree- arts graduates are generally very bad at thinking logically and critically.
33LB 4 months ago
@33LB Which book was it you read? bearing in mind I haven't read any, the only ones I know of are The Female Eunuch and The Beautiful Boy. I still think she does have some intellect it's just that she goes about it the wrong way and makes harsh judgements before obtaining all facts e.g. barbie- sex fantasy, just a basic toy for young girls in my opinion; girls learn to flirt by kissing daddy, I kissed my mum lots when I was young and it wasn't flirting, just mother-son love as I saw it.
LightLife4 4 months ago
@LightLife4 read the female eunuch. even the foreword is full of double standards such as- it's OK for women to value men based on their penis size, but if a man values a woman's breasts, that's objectification.
and then there is a chapter in which germaine greer implies the Y chromosome is responsible for crime, because people born with an extra Y chromosome are more likely to be in prison- sorry, but anyone with a science degree knows genetics is not as simplistic as that.
33LB 4 months ago
@LightLife4 the beautiful boy is a hypocritical work in itself. germaine greer has always spoken out against so called "objectification" of women, and yet, the beautiful boy is a book in which greer objectifies little boys. this point of hypocrisy was raised to greer in a BBC interview and she didn't have an answer- she just sat there with an open mouth.
greer writes well, i'll give her that- but a good command of the english language does NOT mean her ideas are "intellectual"- theyre not

Learn about United Nations Agenda 21.

i think people have completely misinterpreted the meaning of the word "flirting". it is not, like hitchens says, literally a sexually motivated act, but rather a way in which young girls are socialised to get their own way by charming the opposite sex. people are so easily shocked and offended. i will, however, agree that she made the point very badly.

Feminism goal it to break apart families which they believe oppresses women.
Part of this strategy is to cast normal behaviors (by men) as deviant, abusive or just plain anti-women.
Amaguqas 8 months ago
Yes, I've looked again. As far as I understand culture, it is the opposite of what you imply -- e.g. NOT the totality of actions feeding into larger structure, BUT the composite presuppositional basis from which one thinks self-group-norms. Ergo, thinking that telling my daughters to kiss me goodnight is a de facto expression of their 'love' is the inculcation of one type of culture - the hegemonic. What she is suggesting is that such a formulation conditions what you take as empirical.
Andreox 8 months ago
@Andreox Now why did you put the word love in inverted commas? You and Germaine Greer don't know any more about this gent and his daughters than I, so what makes you think that the love he says exists between them is something other than what he says it is. I doubt you would describe your feelings toward your own family as "the inculcation of one type of culture-the hegemonic". Such mechanistic, pseudo-scientific language scarcely does justice to the richness of human relationships now does it?
MrJackonion 8 months ago
The disciplines of psychology, philosophy and sociology surely grew out of a desire to shed light on human behaviour NOT to cloud our understanding with lofty academic jargon. Most right thinking people would balk at Greer's comments because they imply there is an unhealthy incestuous element in our families. Only a childless academic living in an ivory tower would think that it is acceptable to make that suggestion, and only someone with more reading than experience would think to defend her.
MrJackonion 8 months ago
@MrJackonion
Excellent point!
Sambucca 8 months ago
@Andreox What an idiot. Kissing comes from a biological impulse.
brownie1982ad 1 month ago
Greer's comments are appropriately inflammatory to fuel profitable controversy, general enough to upset half the population, but sufficiently vague so as to avoid making any assertions that can actually be disproved. Rather than appealing to our need for truth and conciliation she dredges up and manipulates our hidden paranioas and resentments. Impressionable young girls who hear these comments may possibly come to view their dad - and their future partners - with unnecessary suspicion. Sick.
MrJackonion 8 months ago 2
She wasn't being precise because it wasn't a point about precise fathers, but rather the cultural construction of fatherhood. Unless she listed every father on earth, it could never be precise. It was 'culture' and 'fathers', not Mr X and his daughter named whatever....To jump to the specificity of 'you' on such a general point (which it was meant to be, not a smear against Mr X) is to infer wrongly and construe the relevance wrongly.
Andreox 8 months ago
@Andreox Look carefully at what you have written and think it through. What is a culture if not the actions and attitudes of many individuals of whom he is one?. How is she in a position to make remarks about any fathers she hasn't met and observed in person? And if she is going only on the minute proportion she has actually met, how can her remarks be worth anything at all? Speaking "generally" on a subject shouldn't be used as a cover for venting prejudices.

Little boys kiss their parents goodnight too.

ukculture 8 months ago
She was making a general point about how culture conditions aspects of feminine behaviour. The gentelman -oddly -felt the need to pose the specificities of his own relationship with his daughters giving him a bed-time kiss as some kind of example of something. The argument would have gone much better had GG simply said, how would I know about the specifics of your daughters, your raising of your daughters or what they express in their relationship to you ...
Andreox 8 months ago
@Andreox "There's always been this sinister culture...and it's always been sexual...little girls learn to flirt with their fathers...kiss daddy goodnight and all this business". That's what she said. The man inferred, quite understandably, that Greer's comments had relevance to him as he is the father of little girls. She wasn't precise about her accusation, it was aimed at fathers in the abstract. If you were a father you would probably feel similarly appalled.
MrJackonion 8 months ago
@MrJackonion So you're a liar too! You quote Greer: "... little girls learn to flirt with their fathers...kiss daddy goodnight and all this business" as if there was no video, as if her facial expression and body language when she said "kiss daddy goodnight" did not make it crystal clear that she was quoting and mimicking a PARTICULAR behaviour, in which little girls learn to be coy and flirtatious - lifted shoulder, the pretend shyness - and are rewarded for it. Well done, Mr case in point.
iverglas 7 months ago

The sexualisation of childhood is not just a bra burning rad-fem issue.

iverglas 8 months ago
@iverglas I absolutely do listen. What I heard was a generalisation made by Greer which, in your own words, described the way people say "kiss daddy goodnight" as having some kind of hidden implication. I am using my personal example to illuminate what utter rot Greer was talking and, thanks for your concern, but narcissism does not really apply here. @iverglas I've read your replies to MsRocky Rackoon and I agree that you are going way over the top by accusing her of being a liar; it's a very serious accusation to make. Time will tell.
MrJackonion 8 months ago
@MrJackonion And I care what you say because ... you're a patronising twerp? "In time you will acquire a better understanding ..." I was reading Greer as she was writing, sweetie.

@yzenanja well then i assume that means if you have a son you won't kiss him goodnight because its conditioning him.

Shes lost her mind to feminist poison.

im sorry but that fathers a dolt, missing greer's point completely

What a twisted old bint she is. This only serves to highlight how much she hates men and blames them for all ills. Pathetic really. How anyone could take a daughter giving her dad a goodnight kiss, as some sort of coerced pedophillic act is beyond the pale. Doesnt matter how clever you are, when your mind has been poisoned to this degree, you only sound ridiculous.

well, what can one say, apparently a young girl kissing her father is 'flerting' SHE NEEDS MENTAL HEALTH CARE NEVER MIND MAKING COMPARISONS THERE TO.
