Kewl. I saw a Conrail GP30 in the PA Railroad Museum, and a couple days later on CSX. I don't dig the horn, though I guess there is some grain of truth to the absence of multi-chimed horns in that crappy movie "Runaway" (search for it on YT.)
it doesn't sound like a broken trumpet. when them locomotives get old, so does the horn and the horn starts to go bad. In my own ears, the GP30 has a distinctive horn sound. In my opinion, I've heard a couple of horns blown by GP30s and they almost sound the same but, maybe the sound might be off a little. I don't know how to explain but, you should see it for yourself.
I love them GP-30s!! They rarely run on the mainlines. I heard that most of them perform yard duties and as well as work trains. I love that GP-30 in Santa Fe colors as well as the B&O.
That's great!! Congratulations!! I have seen a GP30 in person too only one time. It was a CSX work train and the GP30 was hauling rails and ties and it had another unit behind it. I believe it was a GP38. I do recall hearing the horn blow and it sort of sound the same like the Santa Fe one. That day I should have caught it on video and my video camera battery died when I was taping the last train before the work train came!! I have a Lionel B&O GP30 and its really nice.
We like to stay at the Ramada in Barstow because it faces the train yard. We always stay on the 2nd or 3rd floor and watch the action all day. My son loves it.
I feel very lucky living in the DFW area. I can (and have) pop over to the Ft Worth yard and sit for hours. Hell, I even took a chance and boarded one of their old Cabooses they still have there. I would give my left arm to have one in my back yard.
People were stopping and asking me if everything was okay... yes everything is great, I am filming some Geeps! I was parked on the shoulder at the crossing with my hazzards on... but I was also standing in front of my car with a camera in my hand!
The GP30's are on there way out :(

This past year, I've noticed that the CSX is using GP30s more often. Gotta love them Geeps!!
dking133115 3 years ago
CSX doesnt have true gp30's. thet use them as slugs, no prime movers, which sucks cuz the sound so nice.

You know, this video has been viewed enough times... does anyone know what horn is on this unit? And is it original to the SF unit?
mtrails 4 years ago
It sounds like the original horn, though in sad shape. Santa Fe used Leslie RS3L's.
Really cool to see the old GP30's
