this movie was shit, it was a legal movie, i thought that the homosexual rights theme was lost behind a "A few good men" kind of legal movie way. The best about it was James Franco and Sean Penn performances but the pace and tone of the movie wasn good, Emile Hisrsh was too exagerated.

Either Rourke or Penn I would have been happy with, both gave passionate performances, but with the Academy awards, they value politics and roles based on real-life folks, hence, Langella's role in Frost/Nixon...it was a strong nominees list don't you think? Rourke, Penn, Langella, Richard Jenkins, and Brad Pitt

Definitely a strong list. And I also agree that politics play a huge role in the academys decisions. I think thats why Penn won Because of the media and political attention (and rightfully so) surrounding the denial of legality for gay marriages (should be legal). Penn was great though, dont get me wrong here. But the parallels between his character, Harvey Milk, and the cultural relevancy it has today is was what put him over the top.
